In ecological restoration of arid/semi-arid sandy lands, micro-topographic variations and artificial shrub arrangement synergistically drive vegetation recovery and soil quality improvement. As a typical fragile ecosystem in northern China, the Mu Us Sandy Land has long suffered wind erosion, desertification, soil infertility, and vegetation degradation, demanding precise vegetation configuration for ecological rehabilitation. This study analyzed soil nutrients, plant diversity, and their correlations under various micro-topographic conditions across different types of artificial shrub plantations in the Mu Us Sandy Land. Employing one-way and two-way ANOVA, we compared the significant differences in soil nutrients and plant diversity indices among different micro-topographic conditions and shrub species. Additionally, redundancy analysis (RDA) was conducted to explore the direct and indirect relationships between micro-topography, shrub species, soil nutrients, and plant diversity. The results show the following: 1. The interdune depressions have the highest plant diversity and optimal soil nutrients, with relatively suitable pH values; the windward slopes and slope tops, due to severe wind erosion, have poor soil nutrients, high pH values, and the lowest plant diversity. Both micro-topography and vegetation can significantly affect soil nutrients and plant diversity (p < 0.05), and vegetation has a greater impact on soil nutrients. 2. The correlation between surface soil nutrients and plant diversity is the strongest, and the correlation weakens with increasing soil depth; under different micro-topographic conditions, the influence of soil nutrients on plant diversity varies. 3. In sandy land ecological restoration, a “vegetation type + terrain matching” strategy should be implemented, combining the characteristics of micro-topography and the ecological functions of shrubs for precise configuration, such as planting Corethrodendron fruticosum on windward slopes and slope tops to rapidly replenish nutrients, promoting Salix psammophila and mixed plantation in interdune depressions and leeward slopes to accumulate organic matter, and prioritizing Amorpha fruticosa in areas requiring soil pH adjustment. This study provides a scientific basis and management insights for the ecological restoration and vegetation configuration of the Mu Us Sandy Land.

The patterns of biomass allocation are crucial for understanding the growth, reproduction, and community functions of plant individuals. We investigated the allometric growth characteristics and biomass allocation patterns of Salix gordejevii fascicular branches in various habitats of the Hunshandake Sandy Land to delve into their adaptability to environmental changes and role in the carbon cycle. We discovered the following: (1) The base diameter-to-branch length of S. gordejevii fascicular branches exhibited allometric growth relationships in mobile dunes and interdune lowlands, whereas it showed isometric growth relationships in semifixed and fixed dunes. As the soil moisture gradient increased, the length growth rate of S. gordejevii fascicular branches became faster than the base diameter growth rate in mobile dunes, demonstrated isometric growth in semifixed and fixed dunes, and was slow in interdune lowlands. (2) The biomasses of S. gordejevii fascicular branches significantly varied across different habitats, with the biomass of each component showing an increasing trend as habitat conditions improved. This study revealed the resource utilization strategies and adaptability of S. gordejevii fascicular branches in different habitats, providing new insights into the carbon sink function of desert ecosystems in semiarid regions.

Salix psammophila is an important tree species adapted to sand-fixing afforestation in arid areas, and its different plant type characteristics can have different ecological functions. To identify the genes affecting the plant type of S. psammophila, this study used RT-qPCR and RNA-seq technology to establish a method for screening the candidate genes of the S. psammophila plant type based on the correlation coefficient of the crown–height ratio. We then screened out the gene combination that can best control the expression of the S. psammophila plant type. The results show the following: (1) The expression levels of the FHY1 and TAC2 genes were positively correlated with the crown–height ratio, whereas those of the ATX1, RFK1, PYL1, ABF2, SPA2, TB1, ZFP4, and LAZY1b genes were negatively correlated with the crown–height ratio. (2) The ATX1 + FHY1 gene combination had the greatest influence on the plant type traits of S. psammophila, and the correlation between the gene combination and the crown–height ratio reached 0.74. (3) The double- gene combination screening method improved the screening efficiency and accuracy, as well as the sensitivity and specificity, indicating certain universality. This strategy can be used for the determination of other plants or other traits, providing a theoretical basis for the directional breeding of forest trees.
