The impending environmental issues and growing concerns for global energy crises are driving the need for new opportunities and technologies that can meet significantly higher demand for cleaner and sustainable energy systems. This necessitates the development of transportation and power generation systems. The electrification of the transportation system is a promising approach to green the transportation systems and to reduce the issues of climate change. This paper inspects the present status, latest deployment, and challenging issues in the implementation of EVs infrastructural and charging systems in conjunction with several international standards and charging codes. It further analyzes EVs impacts and prospects in society. A complete assessment of charging systems for EVs with battery charging techniques is explained. Moreover, the beneficial and harmful impacts of EVs are categorized and thoroughly reviewed. Remedial measures for harmful impacts are presented and benefits obtained therefrom are highlighted. Bidirectional charging offers the fundamental feature of vehicle to grid technology. In this study, the current challenging issues due to the massive deployment of EVs, as well as upcoming research trends are also presented. It is envisioned that the researchers interested in such area can find this paper valuable and an informative one-stop source.

This work presents a battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for pulsed loads (PL) in which ultracapacitors (UCs) run the pulse portion of the load while the battery powers the constant part of the load. Energy stored in UC depends upon the square of its voltage that’s why an active parallel hybrid topology with two bidirectional converters (BDC) is employed here that assigns UC a separate BDC to control its voltage between an upper and lower limit as per-requisite. The other converter is connected between the battery and DC-link to provide a distinct control of the battery. A MATLAB/Simulink model is developed to minimize the factors affecting the battery life such as capacity rate (C-rate), depth of discharge (DoD), and temperature rise due to PL by controlling the operating modes of the BDCs in which voltage of the UC and state of charge (SoC) of the battery are control variables. A constant output voltage across the load is maintained through feedback control. A detailed comparative analysis, among battery-alone, UC-alone, and battery-UC hybrid modes is performed which signifies that the proposed system is 55% lower in cost than its counterparts. The analysis shows that the proposed HESS reduces 50% capacity of a lead-acid battery, which is otherwise necessary to withstand the pulsating loads. Moreover, the performance of the HESS is also tested for electric vehicle (EV) load by hybridizing a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack with a UC bank which confirms its suitability for EV applications.

The proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is one of the most robust and simplest configuration controllers used for industrial applications. However, its performance purely depends on the tuning of its proportional (KP), integral (KI) and derivative (KD) gains. Therefore, a proper combination of these gains is primarily required to achieve an optimal performance of the PID controllers. The conventional methods of PID tuning such as Cohen-Coon (CC) and Ziegler–Nichols (ZN) generate unwanted overshoots and long-lasting oscillations in the system. Owing to the mentioned problems, this paper attempts to achieve an optimized combination of PID controller gains by exploiting the intelligence of the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and one of its recently introduced modified versions called improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) in an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. The stability of the IWOA-AVR system was studied by assessing its root-locus, bode maps, and pole/zero plots. The performance superiority of the presented IWOA-AVR design over eight of the recently explored AI-based approaches was validated through a comprehensive comparative analysis based on the most important transient response and stability metrics. Finally, to assess the robustness of the optimized AVR system, robustness analysis was conducted by analyzing the system response during the variation in the time constants of the generator, exciter, and amplifier from −50% to 50% range. The results of the study prove the superiority of the proposed IWOA-based AVR system in terms of transient response and stability metrics.

Optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) has a crucial impact to enhance safety, reliability, and economical operation of the electric power system. ORPD is a non-linear, non-convex and mixed variable problem, which has been solved by many researchers via different meta-heuristic algorithms during the last decade. In this work, a novel algorithm named sine-cosine algorithm (SCA) is utilized to solve ORPD problem by considering both dependent and independent control variable constraints. SCA has been tested and validated on standard 14, 30 and 57-bus power systems. To validate the superiority of proposed algorithm, the outcomes obtained through SCA are compared with recent published results attained through particle swarm optimization (PSO), modified Gaussian barebones teaching–learning based optimization (BBTLBO), ant bee colony optimization (ABCO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and backtracking search algorithms (BSA). The results attained using SCA show the improvement in the power losses minimization. Thus, with standard 14-bus system, the power losses are minimized from 0.04% to 4.78%. While, using standard 30-bus, the power losses are minimized from 0.4% to 3.4% and with standard 57-bus, power losses are reduced from 0.9% to 1.99%. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with 30 independent runs on the above-mentioned bus systems is performed to examine the functioning of the proposed method in terms of probability density function (PDF) and cumulative density function (CDF). For such analysis, well-known meta-heuristic algorithms such as PSO, WOA, differential evolution (DE) are compared with proposed SCA in solving the ORPD problem. The results of this analysis clearly show that proposed algorithm is robust, effective, and computationally easy in solving the ORPD problem compared to the existing meta-heuristic algorithms.
