Solanum habrochaites (SH), a closely wild related species of Alisa craig (AC), is an important germplasm resource for modern tomato breeding. Trichomes are developed from epidermal cells, producing a role in defense against insect attacking, and their secretions are of non-negligible value. Here, the glandular heads of type VI trichomes were clearly distinguished in AC and SH under cryo-scanning electron microscopy, such difference that allowed SH to secrete more anti-insect metabolites than AC. Pest preference experiments showed that aphids and mites preferred to feed near AC compared to SH. The integration analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics data revealed that phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway was an important secondary metabolic pathway in plants, and SH secreted large amounts of phenylpropanoids and flavonoids than AC by up-regulating the expression of relevant genes in this pathway, which in turn resisted feeding by phytophagous insects. Notably, virus-induced silencing of the Sl4CLL6 not only decreased the expression of genes downstream of the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, SlHCT, SlCAD, and SlCHI, but also reduced resistance to mites in tomato. These findings provided new genetic resources for the synthesis of phenylpropanoid compounds and anti-insect breeding in Solanum habrochaites and new theoretical basis for the improvement of important traits in cultivated tomato.

By effectively observing the land surface and obtaining farmland conditions, satellite remote sensing has played an essential role in agricultural drought monitoring over past decades. Among all remote sensing techniques, optical and thermal remote sensing have the most extended history of being utilized in drought monitoring. The primary goal of this paper is to illustrate how optical and thermal remote sensing have been and will be applied in the monitoring, assessment, and prediction of agricultural drought. We group the methods into four categories: optical, thermal, optical and thermal, and multi-source. For each category, a concise explanation is given to show the inherent mechanisms. We pay special attention to solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, which has great potential in early drought detection. Finally, we look at the future directions of agricultural drought monitoring, including (1) early detection; (2) spatio-temporal resolution; (3) organic combination of multi-source data; and (4) smart prediction and assessment based on deep learning and cloud computing.

Potato is the world’s fourth-largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize. Unlike other crops, it is a typical root crop with a special growth cycle pattern and underground tubers, which makes it harder to track the progress of potatoes and to provide automated crop management. The classification of growth stages has great significance for right time management in the potato field. This paper aims to study how to classify the growth stage of potato crops accurately on the basis of spectroscopy technology. To develop a classification model that monitors the growth stage of potato crops, the field experiments were conducted at the tillering stage (S1), tuber formation stage (S2), tuber bulking stage (S3), and tuber maturation stage (S4), respectively. After spectral data pre-processing, the dynamic changes in chlorophyll content and spectral response during growth were analyzed. A classification model was then established using the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm based on spectral bands and the wavelet coefficients obtained from the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) of reflectance spectra. The spectral variables, which include sensitive spectral bands and feature wavelet coefficients, were optimized using three selection algorithms to improve the classification performance of the model. The selection algorithms include correlation analysis (CA), the successive projection algorithm (SPA), and the random frog (RF) algorithm. The model results were used to compare the performance of various methods. The CWT-SPA-SVM model exhibited excellent performance. The classification accuracies on the training set (Atrain) and the test set (Atest) were respectively 100% and 97.37%, demonstrating the good classification capability of the model. The difference between the Atrain and accuracy of cross-validation (Acv) was 1%, which showed that the model has good stability. Therefore, the CWT-SPA-SVM model can be used to classify the growth stages of potato crops accurately. This study provides an important support method for the classification of growth stages in the potato field.

The content of chlorophyll, an important substance for photosynthesis in plants, is an important index used to characterize the photosynthetic rate and nutrient grade of plants. The real-time rapid acquisition of crop chlorophyll content is of great significance for guiding fine management and differentiated fertilization in the field. This study used the method of continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to process the collected visible and near-infrared spectra of a corn canopy. This task was conducted to extract the valuable information in the spectral data and improve the sensitivity of chlorophyll content assessment. First, a Savitzky–Golay filter and standard normal variable processing were applied to the spectral data to eliminate the influence of random noise and limit drift on spectral reflectance. Second, CWT was performed on the spectral reflection curve with 10 frequency scales to obtain the wavelet energy coefficient of the spectral data. The characteristic bands related to chlorophyll content in the spectral data and the wavelet energy coefficients were screened using the maximum correlation coefficient and the local correlation coefficient extrema, respectively. A partial least-square regression model was established. Results showed that the characteristic bands selected via local correlation coefficient extrema in a wavelet energy coefficient created a detection model with optimal accuracy. The determination coefficient (Rc2) of the calibration set was 0.7856, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the calibration set (RMSEC) was 3.0408. The determination coefficient (Rv2) of the validation set is was 0.7364, and the RMSE of the validation set (RMSEV) was 3.3032. Continuous wavelet transform is a process of data dimension enhancement which can effectively extract the sensitive variables from spectral datasets and improve the detection accuracy of models.

Crop growth in different periods influences the final yield. This study started from the agronomic mechanism of yield formation and aimed to extract useful spectral characteristics in different phenological phases, which could directly describe the final yield and dynamic contributions of different phases to the yield formation. Hyperspectral information of the winter wheat canopy was acquired during three important phases (jointing stage, heading stage, and grain-filling stage). An enhanced 2D correlation spectral analysis method modified by mutual information was proposed to identify the sensitive wavebands. The selected wavebands performed well with good mechanism interpretation and close correlation with important crop growth parameters and main physiological activities related to yield formation. The quantitative contribution proportions of plant growth in three phases to the final yield were estimated by determining the coefficients of partial least square models based on full spectral information. They were then used as single-phase weight factors to merge the selected wavebands. The support vector machine model based on the weighted spectral dataset performed well in yield prediction with satisfactory accuracy and robustness. This result would provide rapid and accurate guidance for agricultural production and would be valuable for the processing of hyperspectral remote sensing data.

Crop growth and development exhibit high temporal heterogeneity. It is crucial to capture the dynamic characteristics of crop growth using intensive time-series data. However, single satellites are limited by revisit cycles and weather conditions to provide dense time-series data for earth observations. However, up until now, there has been no proposed remote sensing fusion product that offers high spatial-temporal resolution specifically for farmland monitoring. Therefore, focusing on the demands of farmland remote sensing monitoring, identifying quantitative conversion relationships between multiple sensors, and providing high spatial-temporal resolution products is the first step that needs to be addressed. In this study, a fused Landsat 8 (L8) Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) multi-spectral instruments (MSI) data product for regional monitoring of farmland at high, mid, and low latitudes in China is proposed. Two image pairs for each study area covering different years were acquired from simultaneous transits of L8 OLI and S-2 MSI sensors. Then, the isolation forest (iForest) algorithm was employed to remove the anomalous pixels of image pairs and eliminate the influence of anomalous data on the conversion relationships. Subsequently, the adjustment coefficients for multi-source sensors at mixed latitudes with high spatial resolution were obtained using an ordinary least squares regression method. Finally, the L8-S-2 fused dataset based on the adjustment coefficients is proposed, which is suitable for different latitude farming areas in China. The results showed that the iForest algorithm could effectively improve the correlation between the corresponding spectral bands of the two sensors at a spatial resolution of 10 m. After the removal of anomalous pixels, excellent correlation and consistency were obtained in three study areas, and the Pearson correlation coefficients between the corresponding spectral bands almost all exceeded 0.88. Furthermore, we mixed the six image pairs of the three latitudes to obtain the adjustment coefficients derived for integrated L8 and S-2 data with high-spatial-resolution. The significance and accuracy quantification of the adjustment coefficients were thoroughly examined from three dimensions: qualitative and quantitative analyses, and spatial heterogeneity assessment. The obtained results were highly satisfactory, affirming the validity and precision of the adjustment coefficients. Finally, we applied the adjustment coefficients to crop monitoring in three latitudes. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time-series curves drawn by the integrated dataset could accurately describe the cropping system and capture the intensity changes of crop growth within the high, middle, and low latitudes of China. This study provides valuable insights into enhancing the application of multi-source remote sensing satellite data for long-term, continuous quantitative inversion of surface parameters and is of great significance for crop remote sensing monitoring.
