Traditional data-driven intelligent fault diagnosis methods have been successfully developed under the closed set assumption (CSA). CSA-based fault diagnosis assumes that the fault types in the test set are consistent with that in the training set, which can achieve high accuracy, but this is generally not valid in real-world industrial applications where the collection of data in industrial applications is often limited. As it is unrealistic to assume that the training set will cover all fault types, the application of the fault classifier may fail when the test set contains unknown fault types because the probability of input samples belonging to unknown types cannot be obtained. To solve the problem of how unknown fault types may be accurately identified, this paper further studies the open set assumption (OSA) fault diagnosis. We propose an open set convolutional neural network (OS-CNN) method and apply our OS-CNN model to an improved OpenMax method as a deep network to accurately detect unknown fault types. The overall performance was significantly improved as our OS-CNN model was able to effectively tighten the boundary of known classes and limit the open-space risk for the OpenMax method based on distance modeling. The overall effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by experimental studies based on four different bearing datasets. Compared with state-of-the-art OSA fault diagnosis method, our method cannot only realize the correct classification of the known fault classes, but it can also accurately detect the unknown fault classes.

The hydraulic pump plays a pivotal role in engineering machinery, and it is essential to continuously monitor its operating status. However, many vital signals for monitoring cannot be directly obtained in practical applications. To address this, we propose a soft sensor approach for predicting the flow signal of the hydraulic pump based on a graph convolutional network (GCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). Our innovative GCN-LSTM model is intricately designed to capture both spatial and temporal interdependencies inherent in complex machinery, such as hydraulic pumps. We used the GCN to extract spatial features and LSTM to extract temporal features of the process variables. To evaluate the performance of GCN-LSTM in predicting the flow of a hydraulic pump, we construct a real-world experimental dataset with an actual hydraulic shovel. We further evaluated GCN-LSTM on two public datasets, showing the effectiveness of GCN-LSTM for predicting the flow of hydraulic pumps and other complex engineering operations.

The electric shovel is a bucket-equipped mining excavator widely used in open-pit mining today. The prolonged direct impact of the bucket teeth with hard and abrasive materials such as ore during the process of the mining excavation can cause the bucket teeth to break and fall off prematurely, resulting in unplanned downtime and productivity losses. In response to this problem, we have developed a vision-based bucket teeth fault detection algorithm with deep learning. Using a dataset based on the images of both real shovel teeth and 3D-printed models, we trained a Faster Region Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) to obtain the number of normal bucket teeth and the positions of the bucket teeth from the images, using the additional bucket dataset from 3D-printed models to pre-train the network for improving its detection accuracy on the real bucket data. We compared the resulting Faster R-CNN model with the ZFNet, the ResNet-50, and the VGG16 and found our Faster R-CNN model to perform best in terms of accuracy and speed.

Truck cranes, which are crucial construction equipment, need to maintain good operational performance to ensure safe use. However, the complex and ever-changing working conditions they face often make it challenging to test their performance effectively. To address this issue, a multi-input and multi-output soft sensor technology model is suggested, utilizing a graph convolutional network and random forest to predict key performance indicators of crane operations such as luffing, telescoping, winching, and slewing under varying conditions. This method aims to streamline the process of testing and debugging truck cranes, ultimately reducing time and costs. Initially, the graph convolutional network model is employed to extract relevant feature information linked to the target variable. Subsequently, using this feature information and the RF model, multiple decision trees are constructed for regression prediction of the target variables. An operational dataset reflecting the crane’s actual working conditions is then generated to assess the graph convolutional network and random forest model. The effectiveness of this approach is further confirmed through comparisons with other methods like gradient boosting trees, support vector regression, and multi-layer perceptron.
