We report on the enhancement of spin Hall angle from the CoFeB/Pt interface by introducing nitrogen into the Pt thin film. Spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements on the effective spin Hall angle (θSH) reveal a non-monotonic variation as a function of the amount of nitrogen gas introduced, Q in the film deposition, which peaks at θSH = 0.16 when Q is 8%. Our analysis shows that the θSH enhancement is mainly attributed to the increase in spin-dependent scattering at the interface. The effective magnetic damping decreases with increasing Q due to the reduced spin–orbit coupling. The interfacial spin transparency is also observed to show improvement after the introduction of nitrogen. Moreover, the additional damping-like torque from the interface may also lead to the enhancement of the linewidth modulation.
Hexagonal D019-type Mn3Z alloys that possess large anomalous and topological-like Hall effects have attracted much attention due to their great potential in antiferromagnetic spintronic devices. Herein, we report the preparation of Mn3Ga films in both tetragonal and hexagonal phases with a tuned Ta/Ru seed layer on a thermally oxidized Si substrate. Large coercivity together with large anomalous Hall resistivity is found in the Ta-only sample with a mixed tetragonal phase. By increasing the thickness of the Ru layer, the tetragonal phase gradually disappears and a relatively pure hexagonal phase is obtained in the Ta(5)/Ru(30) buffered sample. Further magnetic and transport measurements revealed that the anomalous Hall conductivity nearly vanishes in the pure hexagonal sample, while an abnormal asymmetric hump structure emerges in the low field region. The extracted additional Hall term is robust in a large temperature range and presents a sign reversal above 200 K. The abnormal Hall properties are proposed to be closely related to the frustrated spin structure of D019 Mn3Ga.
High temperature studies of spin Hall effect have often been neglected despite its profound significance in real-world devices. In this work, high temperature spin torque ferromagnetic resonance measurement was performed to evaluate the effects of temperature on the Gilbert damping and spin Hall efficiency of PtxCu1−x. When the temperature was varied from 300 K to 407 K, the Gilbert damping was relatively stable with a change of 4% at composition x = 66%. Alloying Pt and Cu improved the spin Hall efficiency of Pt75Cu25/Co/Ta by 29% to a value of 0.31 ± 0.03 at 407 K. However, the critical switching current density is dependent on the ratio between the Gilbert damping and spin Hall efficiency and the smallest value was observed when x = 47%. It was found that at this concentration, the spin transparency was at its highest at 0.85 ± 0.09 hence indicating the importance of interfacial transparency for energy efficient devices at elevated temperature.
