Three ZnAl2O4 samples were prepared via a modified polyacrylamide gel method using a citric acid solution with different aluminum salt starting materials, including AlCl3∙6H2O, Al2(SO4)3∙18H2O and Al(NO3)3∙9H2O under identical conditions. The influence of different aluminum salts on the morphologies, phase purity and optical and fluorescence properties of the as-prepared ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles were studied. The experimental results demonstrate that the phase purity, particle size, morphology and optical and fluorescence properties of ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles can be manipulated by the use of different aluminum salts as starting materials. The energy bandgap (Eg) values of ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles increase with a decrease in particle size. The fluorescence spectra show that a major blue emission band around 400 nm and two weaker side bands located at 410 and 445 nm are observed when the excitation wavelength is 325 nm. The ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles prepared from Al(NO3)3∙9H2O exhibit the largest emission intensity among the three ZnAl2O4 samples, followed in turn by the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles prepared from Al2(SO4)3∙18H2O and AlCl3∙6H2O. These differences are attributed to combinational changes in Eg and the defect types of the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials can convert temperature difffferences into electricity directly and reversibly without air pollution, which provides a viable route for alleviating global warming and the energy crisis. Here, we use first-principles calculations combined with semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory to assess the potential of layered LaCuOSe for TE applications. Originating from the layered crystal structure, the electronic and thermal transport properties (i.e., Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity) are highly anisotropic between the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. The optimal figure of merit of 2.71 is achieved along the out-of-plane direction for electron doping at 900 K. Such excellent TE properties can be attributed to desired La-Se interlayer interaction between adjacent layers and relatively strong coupling between acoustic phonons and optical phonons, resulting in simultaneous enhancement of the electrical conductivity and suppression of the lattice thermal conductivity. This study provides an effective route to improve the TE performance of layered LaCuOSe by utilizing the anisotropic character of transport properties and offers implications in promoting related experimental investigations.

An equiatomic TiZrHfMoNb high-entropy alloy (HEA) was developed as a solar thermal energy storage material due to its outstanding performance of hydrogen absorption. The TiZrHfMoNb alloy transforms from a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure to a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure during hydrogen absorption and can reversibly transform back to the BCC structure after hydrogen desorption. The theoretical calculations demonstrated that before hydrogenation, the BCC structure for the alloy has more stable energy than the FCC structure while the FCC structure is preferred after hydrogenation. The outstanding hydrogen absorption of the reversible single-phase transformation during the hydrogen absorption–desorption cycle improves the hydrogen recycling rate and the energy efficiency, which indicates that the TiZrHfMoNb alloy could be an excellent candidate for solar thermal energy storage.

Developing approaches to effectively induce and control the magnetic states is critical to the use of magnetic nanostructures in quantum information devices but is still challenging. Here MoS2-based nanostructures including atomic defects, nanoholes, nanodots and antidots are characterized with spin-polarized density functional theory. The S-vacancy defect is more likely to form than the Mo-vacancy defect due to the form of Mo–Mo metallic bonds. Among different shaped nanoholes and nanodots, triangle ones associated with ferromagnetic characteristic are most energetically favorable, and exhibit unexpected large spin moments that scale linearly with edged length. In particular, S-terminated triangle nanodots show strong spin anisotropy around the Fermi level with a substantial collective characteristic of spin states at edges, enabling it to a desired spin-filtering structure. However, in the antidot, the net spin, coupled order and stability of spin states can be engineered by controlling type and distance of internal nanoholes. Based on the analysis of the spin coupled mechanism, a specific antidot structure, the only S-terminated antidot, was determined to exhibit a large net spin with long-range ferromagnetic coupling above room temperature. Given the recent achievement of graphene- and BN-based nanohole, nanodot and antidot structures, we believe that our calculated results are suitable for experimental verification and implementation opening a new path to explore MoS2-based magnetic nanostructures.
