Noble metal/semiconductor nanocomposites play an important role in high efficient photocatalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy for fabrication of hollow Pt-ZnO nanocomposite microspheres with hierarchical structure under mild solvothermal conditions using Zn (CH3COO)2·2H2O and HPtCl4 as the precursors, and polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG-6000) and ethylene glycol as the reducing agent and solvent, respectively. The as-synthesized ZnO and Pt-ZnO composite nanocrystals were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen-physical adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy. It was found that Pt content greatly influences the morphology of Pt-ZnO composite nanocrystals. Suitable concentration of HPtCl4 in the reaction solution system can produce well hierarchically hollow Pt-ZnO nanocomposite microspheres, which are composed of an assembly of fine Pt-ZnO nanocrystals. Photocatalytic tests of the Pt-ZnO microspheres for the degradation of the dye acid orange II revealed extremely high photocatalytic activity and stability compared with those of pure ZnO and corresponding Pt deposited ZnO. The remarkable photocatalytic performance of hollow Pt-ZnO microspheres mainly originated from their unique nanostructures and the low recombination rate of the e−/h+ pairs by the platinum nanoparticles embedded in ZnO nanocrystals.

High-activity electrocatalysts with robust structure are critical for development of renewable-energy technologies. Herein, a hybrid of cobalt nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@NCNT) was fabricated via economically scalable pyrolysis of a mixture of a Co-based metal–organic framework (ZIF-67) and dicyandiamide. The as-synthesized Co@NCNT hybrid was characterized by techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) etc., confirming that it possessed desirable properties of high surface area, robust structure, and good conductivity. A series of electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the Co@NCNT exhibits high activity and excellent durability toward several important electrochemical reactions, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in pH-universal electrolyte, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in both acidic and alkaline media, glucose oxidation reaction (GOR), and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium, mainly as a result of the synergistic effects of unique structure and high surface area of the Co nanoparticles and nitrogen dopant in the nanocomposite. A zinc–air battery with outstanding performance was set up using the Co@NCNT as cathode material, demonstrating its potential applications in energy storage and as a conversion system device.
With increasing pollution of water resources and demand for hydrogen energy, photocatalysis, as a “green chemistry” technology, has attracted great attention. To meet the practical application requirements, photocatalysts should possess enhanced efficiency and be of low cost. Here, a novel Z-scheme ternary ZnTiO3/Zn2Ti3O8/ZnO heterojunction has been prepared by a solvothermal-calcination process. The phase transformation process of the sample can be defined as two processes, dehydration and thermal decomposition (ZnTiO3 → Zn2Ti3O8 + ZnO). The ZnTiO3/Zn2Ti3O8/ZnO heterojunction produced in this facile phase transformation strategy displayed highly efficient photocatalytic performance in water splitting for hydrogen production and pollutant removal, e.g. phenol, dye, and heavy metal Cr(VI). On the basis of the PL spectra, photocurrent response, radical trapping experiments and ESR tests, we found that a nontraditional transport of photoinduced carriers created by a single Z-scheme mechanism played a significant role in the efficient removing of target pollutants and hydrogen generation. This work provides a facile phase transformation approach to construct a Z-scheme semiconductor heterostructure system with high efficiency for hydrogen production and water pollution treatment.
