Gerhard Zotz is a Professor of Functional Ecology at the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the University of Oldenburg. He graduated from the University of Würzburg and received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. Then, he was a Postdoctoral researcher at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (1993) and a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the State University of Vermont (1994–1995). Before his current role, he was a Lecturer at the University of Würzburg (1995–2000, where he qualified as a professor in 1998) and a Lecturer at the University of Basel (2001–2005). He has also been affiliated with the  Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute as a Research Associate since 1997. His research focuses on the interface between population biology and plant ecophysiology, mostly in tropical settings.
