The combat system-of-systems in high-tech informative warfare consists of different types of combat systems connected via multiple interconnections, which can be abstracted as types of complex heterogeneous networks. Research on the functional robustness of heterogeneous combat networks (HCNs) is of significant military value for optimizing operation process planning and for improving network survivability in complex electromagnetic battle fields. This study presents an integrated framework, known as the HCN functional robustness (HCNFR) framework to measure the functional robustness of HCNs under various attacking strategies. Specifically, a heterogeneous network model is introduced to characterize HCNs considering different types of functional entities and information flows. Based on this setup, the rescaled operational capability index (ROCI) is first proposed to evaluate the functional robustness of HCNs, and the criterion for functional disintegration of HCNs is established by summing the values of ROCI during the attacking process. Finally, the reliability and effectiveness of HCNFR are illustrated with an empirical case study. The results provide useful insights for operational guidance and design of a more functional and robust combat system-of-systems.

Complex systems widely exist in nature and human society. There are complex interactions between system elements in a complex system, and systems show complex features at the macro level, such as emergence, self-organization, uncertainty, and dynamics. These complex features make it difficult to understand the internal operation mechanism of complex systems. Networked modeling of complex systems is a favorable means of understanding complex systems. It not only represents complex interactions but also reflects essential attributes of complex systems. This paper summarizes the research progress of complex systems modeling and analysis from the perspective of network science, including networked modeling, vital node analysis, network invulnerability analysis, network disintegration analysis, resilience analysis, complex network link prediction, and the attacker-defender game in complex networks. In addition, this paper presents some points of view on the trend and focus of future research on network analysis of complex systems.

Drones, with the potential to significantly increase the efficiency of the delivery, have received much attention in recent years. Still, there are some bottleneck problems in the application of the long-distance drone delivery, such as the limited flight range and flight safety. Therefore, the article proposes a novel service system, including the battery exchange stations and maintenance checkpoints, to provide long-distance delivery services. Then, with respect to the service system, we construct a drone path programming model, where a special penalty value is proposed as the objective function to simultaneously minimize the path length and number of landing depots for the delivery service. Thereafter, to efficiently find the optimal flight path among huge solution space, we improve the ant colony optimization with the A* algorithm embedded to avoid the nondirectional searching of ants. Finally, we use a case of Shanghai city to study the feasibility and effectiveness of our approaches, which includes the comparison of our algorithm and the other three heuristics on ten random delivery cases, the verification of the effectiveness of our algorithm on the long-distance delivery service, and a sensitive analysis of the effect of the depot number on the optimal solution.

Maritime search and rescue (SAR) operations play a crucial role in reducing fatalities and mitigating human suffering. Compared to short-range maritime SAR, long-range maritime SAR (LRMSAR) is more challenging due to the far distance from the shore, changeful weather, and less available resources. Such an operation put high requirements on decision makers to timely assign multiple resources, such as aircraft and vessels to deal with the emergency. However, most current researches pay attention to assign only one kind of resource, while practically, multiple resources are necessary for LRMSAR. Thus, a method is proposed to provide support for decision makers to allocate multiple resources in dealing with LRMSAR problem; to ensure the sustainable use of resources. First, by analyzing the factors involved in the whole process, we formulated the problem as a multi-objective optimization problem, the objective of which was to maximize both the probability of completing the tasks and the utilities of allocated resources. Based on the theory of search, an integer nonlinear programming (INLP) model was built for different tasks. Second, in order to solve the non-deterministic polynomial-time hardness (NP-hard) model, by constructing a rule base, candidate solutions can be found to improve the calculation efficiency. Furthermore, in order to obtain the optimal scheme, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) was applied to the candidate solution sets to approximate Pareto fronts. Finally, an emergency case of Chinese Bohai Sea was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. In the study, 11 resource allocation schemes were obtained to respond to the emergency, and calculation processes of schemes were further analyzed to demonstrate our model’s rationality. Results showed that the proposed models provide decision-makers with scientific decision support on different emergency tasks.
