Roger Wilson is a soft tissue sarcoma patient originally diagnosed in 1999. He has had six recurrences, including lymph node metastasis and lung metastases; ten surgeries, including an amputation and bilateral lung metastasectomy; chemotherapy; and radiotherapy. In 2003, he founded Sarcoma UK and played a central role in the restructuring of sarcoma care in England. Sarcoma UK now raises about GBP 3m per annum, funds research, runs a telephone helpline, and is a core part of the sarcoma scene in the UK. In 2009, he co-founded what is now the Sarcoma Patient Advocacy Global Network (SPAGN), which is an umbrella group of sarcoma patient groups worldwide. He is currently the Honorary President. SPAGN currently has 68 members. Roger Wilson has contributed his ‘lived experience’ to pharma companies, academic researchers, research charities, healthcare administrators, statutory regulators, and the media. By background, he is a journalist and television producer, now retired. In 2011, he was awarded a CBE by HM Queen Elizabeth for his advocacy work. He also has honorary doctorates from Sheffield University and Lancaster University.
