Mario Orena completed his doctoral thesis in1974, under the supervision of Professor Giuliana Cardillo at Bologna University (Alma Mater). Then, after a post-doctoral fellow at the same University (Professor Gianfranco Cainelli), he became a research associate in 1981 and then an associate professor in 1987. In 1991 he moved to Polytechnic University of Marche (Ancona, Italy) where he became a full professor in 2000 and from 2007 to 2012 coordinated the of Ph.D. course in Applied Biomolecular Sciences. His research interests mainly concerned the stereoselective synthesis of polyfunctionalized products with biological activity, the preparation of isosteres of natural amino acids and the synthesis of foldamers starting from chiral γ-lactam tethered β-amino acids.
