The one-time application of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer can not only reduce the labor input, but also reduce the mechanical input cost, and has the characteristics of slow release and reduce volatilization loss. This research is grounded in a localization trial initiated in 2018, which underwent comprehensive analysis utilizing high-throughput sequencing technology to elucidate the mutual feeding mechanism of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application rate on microbial community structure, network complexity, and maize yield in different root niches (bulk soil, rhizosphere, and endosphere). Soil characteristics, microbial community composition, and collinear network of different ecological niches under slow-release nitrogen fertilizer were analyzed, and the key core species affecting the stability of the microbial network and the factors driving yield were identified. The results showed that nitrogen application increased the diversity of bacteria, and nitrogen application significantly increased the diversity of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi due to rhizosphere effects. Slow-release nitrogen fertilizer increased the complexity of the bacterial network and decreased the complexity of the fungal network, particularly, the network complexity of bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere was higher than that in the bulk soil and the rhizosphere. The application of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer increased the abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Gemmatimonadota, Actinobacteria, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and other dominant bacteria. Coordinate soil physical and chemical properties, increase soil enzyme activity and soil nutrients, improve soil microenvironment, regulate microbial community composition, and promote above-ground yield increase, in which nitrogen application, urease, nitrate reductase and nitrate nitrogen are the main driving factors for yield increase. These findings provide a new idea for the mutual feeding mechanism of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer on microbial diversity and yield in different ecological niches. To selection of suitable nitrogen application rate and regional ecological security in the agro-pastoral ecotone. It offers a theoretical framework for establishing optimal nitrogen application rates and ensuring food security in agro-pastoral ecotones.

Soil organic carbon is a vital component of the soil carbon pool. Investigation of its composition and dynamics is crucial for enhancing carbon sequestration in soils and for stabilizing the global carbon cycle. In recent years, considerable research has focused on the interactions between soil organic carbon components and their responses to varied land use and agricultural practices. However, the mechanism of soil organic carbon sequestration and response characteristics of soil organic carbon components to soil carbon pools are still subject to some debate. To the best of our knowledge, no researchers have used bibliometric analyses to explore the field of soil organic carbon components. This study thus involved the use of bibliometric techniques to identify research hotspots in the study of organic carbon components over the last 23 years and future trends in research development. Specifically, we performed a comprehensive literature review of 607 documents pertaining to organic carbon components using the Web of Science database, covering the period from 2000 to 2023. Employing CiteSpace, we visualized and analyzed the data across national, institutional, disciplinary, and keyword dimensions. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive, systematic, and quantitative analysis of publications pertaining to organic carbon component research. The results indicate that researchers in the United States and China have substantially influenced the study of soil organic carbon components. Since 2000, the United States has pioneered the study of soil organic carbon components, establishing a foundational role in this field of research. Meanwhile, China leads with the largest number of publications and the most diverse research directions in this field. Among the institutions involved in such research, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences has the highest number of publications. The investigation of soil organic carbon components within agricultural systems is inherently multidisciplinary, with the most comprehensive research being performed within the soil sciences discipline. At present, the focal areas of research on soil organic carbon components predominantly revolve around the impacts of straw return to fields, varying land-use changes, restoration of vegetation, and the reciprocal effects of soil organic carbon components on the restoration of vegetation. The findings of this work highlight the research hotspots within the field of soil organic carbon components and the emerging trends within this field. This work offers novel insights into the dynamics of soil organic carbon components, potentially guiding future studies in this vital field.

Drought is the most important natural disaster affecting crop growth and development. Crop rhizosphere microorganisms can affect crop growth and development, enhance the effective utilization of nutrients, and resist adversity and hazards. In this paper, six spring wheat varieties were used as research material in the dry farming area of the western foot of the Greater Khingan Mountains, and two kinds of water control treatments were carried out: dry shed rain prevention (DT) and regulated water replenishment (CK). Phenotypic traits, including physiological and biochemical indices, drought resistance gene expression, soil enzyme activity, soil nutrient content, and the responses of potential functional bacteria and fungi under drought stress, were systematically analyzed. The results showed that compared with the control (CK), the leaf wilting, drooping, and yellowing of six spring wheat varieties were enhanced under drought (DT) treatment. The plant height, fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and stomatal conductance (Gs), soil total nitrogen (TN), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP), organic carbon (SOC), and soil alkaline phosphatase (S-ALP) contents were significantly decreased, among which, FW, Gs and MBC decreased by more than 7.84%, 17.43% and 11.31%, respectively. By contrast, the soil total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), and soil catalase (S-CAT) contents were significantly increased (p < 0.05). TaWdreb2 and TaBADHb genes were highly expressed in T.D40, T.L36, and T.L33 and were expressed at low levels in T.N2, T.B12, and T.F5. Among them, the relative expression of the TaWdreb2 gene in T.L36 was significantly increased by 2.683 times compared with CK. Soil TN and TP are the most sensitive to drought stress and can be used as the characteristic values of drought stress. Based on this, a drought-tolerant variety (T.L36) and a drought-sensitive variety (T.B12) were selected to further analyze the changes in rhizosphere microorganisms. Drought treatment and cultivar differences significantly affected the composition of the rhizosphere microbial community. Drought caused a decrease in the complexity of the rhizosphere microbial network, and the structure of bacteria was more complex than that of fungi. The Shannon index and network modular number of bacteria in these varieties (T.L36) increased, with rich small-world network properties. Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Basidiomycota, and Ascomycota were the dominant bacteria under drought treatment. The beneficial bacteria Bacillus, Penicillium, and Blastococcus were enriched in the rhizosphere of T.L36. Brevibacillus and Glycomyce were enriched in the rhizosphere of T.B12. In general, drought can inhibit the growth and development of spring wheat, and spring wheat can resist drought hazards by regulating the expression of drought-related genes, regulating physiological metabolites, and enriching beneficial microorganisms.

Flax is an economic crop with a long history. It is grown worldwide and is mainly used for edible oil, industry, and textiles. Here, we reported a high-quality genome assembly for “Neiya No. 9”, a popular variety widely grown in China. Combining PacBio long reads, Hi-C sequencing, and a genetic map reported previously, a genome assembly of 473.55 Mb was constructed, which covers ~94.7% of the flax genome. These sequences were anchored onto 15 chromosomes. The N50 lengths of the contig and scaffold were 0.91 Mb and 31.72 Mb, respectively. A total of 32,786 protein-coding genes were annotated, and 95.9% of complete BUSCOs were found. Through morphological and cytological observation, the male sterility of flax was considered dominant nuclear sterility. Through GWAS analysis, the gene LUSG00017705 (cysteine synthase gene) was found to be closest to the most significant SNP, and the expression level of this gene was significantly lower in male sterile plants than in fertile plants. Among the significant SNPs identified in the GWAS analysis, only two were located in the coding region, and these two SNPs caused changes in the protein encoded by LUSG00017565 (cysteine protease gene). It was speculated that these two genes may be related to male sterility in flax. This is the first time the molecular mechanism of male sterility in flax has been reported. The high-quality genome assembly and the male sterility genes revealed, provided a solid foundation for flax breeding.

Enhancing crop nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in agricultural sciences is a pivotal challenge, particularly for high-demand crops like potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.), the world’s third most significant food crop. This study delves into the molecular responses of potatoes to low nitrogen (LN) stress, employing an integrative approach that combines transcriptomics and metabolomics to compare two cultivars with divergent NUE traits: XS6, known for its high NUE, and NS7, characterized by lower NUE. Our research unveils that XS6 exhibits higher chlorophyll and N content, increased tuber yield, and elevated N assimilation capacity under LN stress conditions compared to NS7. Through transcriptome analysis, we identified critical genes involved in C and N metabolism that had higher expression in XS6. A significant discovery was the high-affinity nitrate transporter 2.7 gene, which showed elevated expression in XS6, suggesting its key role in enhancing NUE. Metabolomics analysis further complemented these findings, revealing a sophisticated alteration of 1252 metabolites under LN stress, highlighting the dynamic interplay between carbon and N metabolism in coping with N scarcity. The integration of transcriptomic and metabolomic data underscored the crucial role of trehalose in mitigating N deficiency and enhancing NUE. This study provides novel insights into the molecular mechanisms governing NUE in potatoes, offering valuable perspectives for molecular breeding to enhance NUE in potatoes and potentially other crops.

The application of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer not only economizes labor input, but also decreases the frequency of use of mechanical intakes, with significant implications in advancing modern intensive agricultural production. Whether slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application can influence the association between microbial diversity and soil multifunctionality remains controversial. This study analyzed the spatial variances of soil environmental factors, soil multifunctionality, and their correlations with bacterial and fungal communities under five nitrogen application rates. The key factors influencing the dominant microbial species and community structures at different spatial locations were determined by the slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application rate, and the driving factors and dominant species of soil multifunctionality were identified. In contrast to the control group, moderate slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application enhanced soil multifunctionality and ameliorated the resilience of microbial diversity loss at diverse spatial locations resulting from irrational nitrogen fertilizer application. The resilience of the fungal community to disturbances caused by fertilization was lower than that of the bacterial community. Bacterial diversity exhibited a significant correlation with soil multifunctionality, and the soil multifunctionality intensity under 240 kg ha−1 treatment increased by 159.01% compared to the CK. The main dominant bacterial communities and the dominant fungal community Ascomycota affected soil multifunctionality through slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application. Structural equation modeling and random forest analysis demonstrated that bacterial community diversity, particularly in bulk soil and the rhizosphere, community composition, and soil nitrogen form are the primary driving factors of soil multifunctionality. Results indicated that the microbial niche alterations induced by slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application positively affect soil multifunctionality.
