The market power and competition scenario of recycling enterprises and landfills may change in the future due to the environmental pressure caused by landfills and the environmental potential of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) recycling. In this context, how these changes will affect the economic performance of enterprises and the environmental performance of the whole society remains unclear, along with how the willingness to pay and the environmental awareness of contractors will affect the pricing decisions of recycling enterprises and landfills. This study investigates the charging and recycling problem under different power structures in the reverse supply chain of C&DW, which is composed of waste generators (construction contractors) and two disposers (recycling enterprises and landfills). The interactive decisions of three stakeholders are discussed and the optimal charge fee, profit, and recycling ratio are obtained. Results indicate the following (i) The environmental preference of contractors directly increases the charge fee of recycling enterprises, and indirectly increases the charge fee of landfills. (ii) An increase in contractors’ environmental preference will reduce the recycling ratio of C&DW and increase landfill and illegal dumping ratios. (iii) From the perspective of environmental benefits, illegal dumping and recycling ratios experience the worst scenario in the Recycling-Stackelberg game model and the best scenario in Nash game model because recycling enterprises take advantage of their dominant market position and set higher charges than those that contractors can afford. This theoretical study bridges the research gap on the effects of the market power on the environmental and economic performance of stakeholders in the field of C&DW management. The findings also help policy makers understand the behavior of stakeholders under different power structures to formulate the most effective intervention strategies.

In order to enhance the scientific understanding of the transition law of rural residential areas and enrich the theory and method system of land use transition research, this article takes Shandong Province as an example and constructs a comprehensive research framework of rural residential land scale, structure, and function from the perspective of the combination of the macro and micro scales based on differences between the rural residential areas in the region and the village scale forms. Using model quantitative analysis and horizontal comparative analysis methods, this paper explores the process characteristics of rural residential land use scale transition and the corresponding stage differentiation law of spatial structure and system function. Research has shown that the stage characteristics of the scale transition of rural residential land use in Shandong Province in the past 10 years are significant. The five transition stages—from the primary stage, low stage, intermediate stage, advanced stage, to the stable stage—show obvious spatial agglomeration and spatial autocorrelation, which are mainly driven by the positive and negative interactions of economic development, the policy environment, natural conditions, and population. With the gradual upgrading of the land use scale transition in rural residential areas, the spatial pattern of rural residential areas has been continuously optimized, the land use structure has tended to be balanced and complicated, and the living-production-ecological function as a whole has been strengthened. The essence of this type of differentiation is the differential performance of rural residential areas adapting their own conditions to the external environment. The transition of the rural residential area from the macro to the micro scale is also the process of realizing rural reconstruction and rural revitalization. In the future, under the framework of the “element–structure–function” system of rural residential areas, the rural transition and development should be continuously promoted through the support, organization, guidance, and promotion mechanisms of internal and external factors.

Taking the Bohai Economic Rim as the research area and 44 prefecture-level cities as research objects, on the basis of deepening the connotation of urban land use morphology, we constructed a multi-dimensional indicator system for urban land use transition based on the dominant and recessive morphologies of land use. The patterns of change and transition type are described by single-morphology and comprehensive morphology indices, respectively, while a decoupling elastic coefficient model was used to analyze the coupling relationship and evolution process between the dominant and recessive morphologies of urban land use. The results showed the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the single-morphology and comprehensive morphology indices of urban land use in the Bohai Economic Rim both improved, to a certain extent. Overall, the transition types of dominant and recessive morphologies of urban land use showed a development trend, in which the degree of recessive morphology transition was higher than the degree of dominant morphology transition, and the spatial difference of its distribution pattern was obvious. (2) From 2000 to 2020, the type of coupling relationship between the dominant and recessive morphologies of urban land use in the Bohai Economic Rim experienced an evolution, from a single-morphology recession decoupling to a single-morphology leading positive hook. The whole region was in the benign development stage of close coupling, where the degree of transition showed the spatial characteristics of Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei > Liaodong Peninsula > Shandong Peninsula. (3) Differences in the economic levels and urbanization processes of different cities led to different paths, speeds, and degrees of urban land use transition, showing stable, volatile, and non-transition paths. The direct influence of different influencing factors, as well as their potential effects, drive the dominant and recessive morphologies of urban land use to grow, in terms of coupling and synergy, promoting the realization of urban land use transition.

Food safety is related to public health, social welfare, and human survival, all of which are important and pressing areas of concern all over the world. The government plays an increasingly important role in the supervision of food safety. The role of the government, however, is also controversial. Using provincial panel data of China from 2005 to 2015, the present study intends to shed light on the associations between government intervention and food safety performance under two scenarios of local government—competition and noncompetition. This will be accomplished through an exploratory spatial data analysis and a spatial econometric model. The results reveal negative associations between food safety performance and government intervention without considering local government competition. As was also observed, government intervention not only inhibits the improvement of food safety in the region, but also has a negative spatial spillover effect on food safety in neighboring provinces. This is the result after considering government competition, thus, showing the competitive strategic interaction of the “race to the bottom”. Further analysis reveals that, if geographically similar regions are selected as reference objects, the food safety performance of each province will have a stronger tendency to compete for the better. If regions with similar economic development levels are selected as reference objects, food safety performance will have a stronger tendency to compete for the worse. This work provides new evidence for the relationships between government intervention and food safety, and, also, proposes some insightful implications for policymakers for governing food safety.

The vast output of household waste has become a terrible environmental problem with the rapid growth of social development and population in China. Several pilot cities have introduced related policies to regulate urban residents in sorting household waste. Although existing research has concentrated on sorting waste intentions and behaviours amongst urban residents, especially in pilot cities or other large cities, waste produced in non-city areas should not be neglected. Accordingly, this study identified the determinants influencing waste sorting intentions and behaviours of residents in rural or urban–rural integration areas by incorporating the theory of planned behaviour and norm-activation model. A total of 241 residents completed valid questionnaires, and the collected data were empirically analysed through covariance-based structural equation modelling. Results implied that behavioural attitude and perceived behavioural control were the most significant predictors of sorting waste intention and behaviour. Meanwhile, personal moral norms and subjective norms also presented positive effects on behavioural intention. Awareness of Consequence had a significant influence on personal moral norm rather than behavioural intention. After empirical analysis, this study proposed several managerial implications regarding waste problems in rural and urban–rural integration areas in China.

The measuring method of sustainable development level based on urban official statistics is relatively objective, and an increasing number of countries have used it to assess government performance and city ranking. However, there is still no effective measures to make urban development more resilient and sustainable. This paper investigates the limitations of the existing urban sustainable development assessing methods and reassesses urban sustainability from the perspective of resident perception. First, we refined a six-dimensional evaluation index system by expert interview and literature review. Then, we used the method combining the entropy weight and cloud model to comprehensively measure the sustainability level of different regions in Shanghai. We found that the sustainable development level of the center city, new town, and suburb areas were classified between “middle” and “good”, while the suburb areas were closer to the “middle” level, and the center city, new town areas were closer to the “good” level. The highest sustainable level was found in the center city areas, which exhibited obvious heterogeneity and robustness. The new town’s sustainability level is the second, while it experiences the fastest development speed. From the perspective of the whole city, the resident perceived sustainability of economic living, social security, public service, city environment, and infrastructure have reached the “middle” level and above, with the best assessment for infrastructure. The exception is the perception related to public traffic. This study contributes a new angle of resident perception and the “entropy weight-cloud model” method for conducting an integrated assessment of urban sustainability. While revealing sustainable development level of the whole city, it can also help making a detailed comparative analysis of the sustainability differences from different regions and different dimensions.

The government, construction contractors, and waste recycling plants are the three critical stakeholders in the construction and demolition wastes (C&DW) recycling market. However, the low efficiency of government supervision, the low quality of the recycled products, and the poor acceptance of contractors have challenged the sustainability of the market in China. This study examined how strategies are changing for local governments, contractors, and recycling plants in the C&DW recycling market by establishing a tripartite evolutionary game model. Numerical simulation analysis was used to verify the proposed theoretical model and discuss the key parameters’ effects on stakeholder decision-making on the basis of current practice in Shanghai, China. The results demonstrated that: (i) six evolutionary stable strategies exist, of which the strategies combination of the supervision of market by local governments, the purchasing of recycled products by contractors, and the production of high-quality products by recycling plants are the most favourable choices. (ii) The evolutionary stable strategy of recycling plants highly depends on production cost and violation penalties. Recycling plants will be induced to produce high-quality products when violation penalties are higher than the additional cost for obeying supervision policies. (iii) The evolutionary stable strategy of construction contractors is significantly affected by product prices, reputation benefits, and resource taxes. Construction contractors are willing to pay a reasonable environmental premium for recycled products as long as the associated reputation benefits are sufficiently attractive. (iv) Lower subsidy is more conducive to evolving toward a trilateral stable strategy because of limited government finances. This study may contribute to the present understanding of the behavior, demand and synergy of stakeholders in the C&DW recycling market and provides valuable management implications for policymakers to promote the sustainable C&DW recycling practice.

In the past few decades, a considerable number of old houses have been demolished in China’s urban redevelopment projects, which led to the disappearance of some historic buildings and the relocation of the original residents. Recently, the strategy of housing demolition (HD) in Chinese cities has been replaced by housing conservation and renovation (HCR). However, the transition from HD to HCR is not carried out well. This study aims to explore the key challenges in HCR practice by using a mixed method. Based on the field investigations in pilot projects and semistructured interviews, current HCR practices in Shanghai are summarized, and the four key challenges are identified as: (1) funding shortages; (2) an underdeveloped regulatory environment; (3) a psychological gap between the government and residents; and (4) a lack of stakeholders’ involvement. Targeted measures are proposed to mitigate the challenges. The findings and suggestions here could provide valuable references for the government when making decisions on sustainable housing conservation and renovation, and may promote urban renewal practices in China and other developing countries.

Bike sharing, especially dockless bike sharing (DBS), plays a key role in enhancing sustainable mobility in Chinese cities. Unsustainable usage modes and user behavior are increasingly serious problems confronting DBS in China that may substantially threaten its profits and supply. While existing studies have mainly focused on how to promote DBS, the issue of the sustainable usage of shared bikes has been largely overlooked. This paper examined the determinants affecting users’ sustainable usage intention and behavior by incorporating awareness of consequences and moral obligation into the theory of planned behavior. Based on partial least squares structural equation modeling, the questionnaire data of 705 users (67.92% of all respondents) who had used DBS in sustainable ways were empirically analyzed. The results revealed that perceived behavioral control and moral obligation are the most important factors driving users’ sustainable usage intention and behavior and that behavioral attitude and subjective norms also present significant positive effects on sustainable usage intention. In contrast to the hypothesized relationship, the awareness of consequences does not play a significant role in sustainable usage intention. Moreover, the empirical results ascertained that the extended model has stronger interpretation ability than the original model in predicting DBS users’ sustainable usage behavior. Eventually, some targeted managerial implications are proposed. This study enhances the current understanding of the sustainable usage behavior of DBS users and provides timely insights for policymakers and operators promoting sustainable bike-sharing practices in China and other countries operating DBS programs.

Since the theory of planned behavior (TPB) was proposed by Ajzen in 1985, it has attracted extensive interest and been widely applied worldwide. Although an increasing number of studies have employed the TPB in the domain of environmental science, there have been no attempts to retrospectively analyze existing articles. The current study aimed to holistically understand the application status of the TPB in environmental science from a knowledge domain visualization perspective. A total of 531 journal articles were obtained through the Scopus database to perform a bibliometric analysis and content analysis. The results showed that waste management, green consumption, climate and environment, saving and conservation, and sustainable transportation are the primary research topics; the United States (U.S.), Mainland China, the United Kingdom (UK), and Malaysia are the most productive countries/regions. Moreover, the cross-disciplinary situations, main source journals, and key articles were revealed. Furthermore, the extended factors, integrated theories, major methods, specific groups, and control variables of environmental science research using the TPB were elaborated and integrated into a comprehensive application framework. Constructive criticisms were ultimately discussed. The findings contribute in several ways to help relevant researchers learn about the application of TPB to environmental science and provide new insights and holistic references for further research on environment-related behavior.

With the rapid growth of urban economy and population in China, the output of municipal solid waste (MSW) has dramatically increased becoming a constant threat to residents’ living environment and health. The classification intention of residents plays a pivotal role in solving the problem of MSW disposal. While numerous studies have examined the classification behavior of MSW from the perspective of ordinary residents and households, few studies have attempted to understand young people’s sorting intention. The novelty of this research is to explore the determinants that affect young people’s intention toward municipal solid waste sorting (MSWS) by extending the predictive factors of environmental concern and personal moral obligation into the theory of planned behavior (TPB). A sample of 524 young respondents from Hebei Province in China were used to conduct a structural equation model (SEM) validation. The empirical results revealed that, according to the rankings of significance, personal moral obligation, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norm had positive influences on young people’s intention toward MSWS, while attitude and environmental concern did not. Furthermore, the multi-group comparison showed that, compared with the male and rural group, the intention of female and urban respondents to classify MSW was not affected by subjective norms. Some targeted managerial implications were ultimately proposed to promote young people’s intention toward MSWS. This study contributes to the existing knowledge system of MSWS by revealing the classification intention of young people as a group. The findings and implications provide the government with useful insights for encouraging young people to actively participate in MSWS.

Mapping knowledge domain (MKD) is an important research technology in bibliometrics. It provides a visual perspective for researchers and helps researchers to clearly understand the general situations of specific research fields. Presently, MKD has been widely used in fields such as ecology and transportation safety. In this paper, we conduct a systematically bibliometric analysis of the development trend on urban vitality research by using VOSviewer software, and this work is based on the related articles published in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) between 1998 and 2018. In the implementation, we firstly introduce the annual numbers of articles, source journals, highly cited papers, and production countries relating to urban vitality research. Then, we adopt a keywords co-occurrence analysis to explore the topic distribution, research frontiers, and research trends of urban vitality research intuitively. Overall, the Mapped Knowledge Domain method has proved to be an effective way to assess research trends in specific disciplines and to contribute to researchers and governments with respect to management and decision-making on issues of science.

Building information modelling (BIM) is a set of technologies that aim to increase interorganisational and cross-disciplinary collaboration in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries to promote productivity and the quality of design, construction, and maintenance stages of a building. Studies on BIM adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have remained an under-represented area. It is necessary to understand the main challenges hindering the adoption of BIM in SMEs and to consider corresponding strategies that can be applied in order to obtain further understanding of BIM in SMEs. On the basis of literature review and interview, stakeholder-associated factors were identified from a network perspective, and the social network analysis (SNA) method was applied to determine the interconnections between the influencing factors and links in BIM adoption in SMEs. Eventually, 10 critical factors and 10 crucial links were selected and divided into six challenges. Corresponding strategies, including cultivating the BIM perception of SMEs, integrated project delivery, strengthening the legal environment for BIM adoption in SMEs, and developing native software and standards and cloud-based technology, were proposed to mitigate these challenges. The strategies may help practitioners gain an in-depth understanding of BIM adoption in SMEs from a stakeholder-oriented perspective.

In past decades, the massive generation of construction and demolition waste (CDW) was increasingly threatening the public environment and humanity health worldwide. A large amount of research has been devoted to the CDW from difference perspectives. However, few scholars have attempted to summarize and review the extant studies, especially in the managerial areas of CDW (MA-CDW). This paper fills this gap via a systematic and quantitative review in the CDW management field. Employing the scientometric analysis method, a total of 261 articles published from 2006 to 2018 were collected to construct the knowledge map and comprehensive framework for MA-CDW. Results show that the overall evolutionary trend of MA-CDW was from basic management concepts to internal and external challenges analysis, to organizational strategy and innovative management practices. The major MA-CDW knowledge domains were identified and summarized into four pillars, namely: (1) factor and challenge; (2) composition and quantification; (3) assessment and comparison; and (4) technology and method. Based on the trend, knowledge gaps and future research directions were found out and discussed. This study contributes to the existing MA-CDW knowledge by presenting a comprehensive knowledge framework. Furthermore, these findings can provide the researchers and practitioners with an in-depth understanding for the sustainable governance of CDW.

In China, dockless bike-sharing programs (DBSPs) play a significant role in promoting the goals of sustainable urban travel and carbon emissions reduction. However, the sustainability of DBSPs is increasingly being challenged as various issues associated with different stakeholders emerge. While numerous studies have focused on the barriers to traditional bike-sharing programs, the sustainability performance of new-generation DBSPs is largely overlooked. It is accordingly imperative to understand the primary challenges that impede the sustainability of DBSPs and to consider what stimulative measures can be taken. In this study, we investigate the factors that are critical to DBSPs’ sustainability from a network perspective. Stakeholder-associated factors and their interrelations were identified via literature analysis and interviews, and the social network analysis (SNA) method was employed to recognize the critical factors and links in DBSPs. As a result, 10 critical factors and 10 major interactions were identified and further classified into six challenges. Sharing transport schemes, legislative perfection, public private partnership (PPP), and product lifecycle management (PLM) were proposed to govern these challenges. This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge of bike-sharing programs via a network approach that integrates the key influencing factors with those factors’ associated stakeholders. Furthermore, these findings provide the government and operators with implications for mitigating the tough challenges and facilitating the sustainability of DBSPs.
