Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is a low-molecular-weight natural chemical predominantly obtained from the autolysis of sinigrin, a glucosinolate found in cruciferous vegetables like mustard, horseradish, and wasabi. AITC has sparked widespread interest due to its various biological actions, which include strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticancer capabilities. This compound offers promising potential in several fields, particularly in food preservation, medicine, and enhancing food quality through natural means. AITC’s effectiveness against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including foodborne pathogens and spoilage agents, makes it an attractive natural alternative to synthetic preservatives. The potential to extend the shelf life of perishable foods makes AITC an important tool for food production, meeting rising customer demand for natural additives. In addition to its antimicrobial effects, AITC demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory activity, reducing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating key signaling pathways, which could make it valuable in managing chronic inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, emerging research highlights its potential in cancer prevention and treatment, as AITC has been demonstrated to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell increase in several cancer cell lines, offering a natural approach to chemoprevention. This review delves into the chemical structure, metabolism, and bioavailability of freshly produced AITC, providing a comprehensive overview of its beneficial properties. Challenges related to AITC’s volatility, dosage optimization, and regulatory considerations are also discussed, alongside future research directions to enhance the stability and efficacy of AITC-based formulations. The findings underscore AITC’s role as a versatile bioactive compound with known potential to support human health and the sustainable food industry.

In order to investigate the abiotic stress (drought) tolerance of oat (Avena sativa L.) with silicon and sulphur foliar fertilisation treatments, and monitor the effect of the treatments on the physiology, production, stress tolerance, plant, and grain quality of winter oat varieties, a field experiment was conducted in the growing season of 2020–2021. As a continuation of our article, published in another Special Issue of Plants, in this publication we evaluate the effect of silicon and sulphur treatments on the quality of winter oats. The whole grain sulphur content was significantly different between varieties. The foliar fertiliser treatments caused greater differences in both the carbon and nitrogen, and sulphur contents in the green plant samples, compared to the differences measured in the grain. Foliar treatments had a significant effect on the sulphur content of both plant samples and grains. Significant differences in the Al, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, and Zn contents of oat grains were measured, both between treatments and between varieties. Winter oat varieties did not respond equally to the foliar fertiliser treatments in terms of either macronutrient or micronutrient content. When P, K, Ca, Mg, and S were summarised, the highest values were in the control plots. Significant differences in protein content were identified between winter oat varieties in response to the treatments, but the varieties did not respond in the same way to different foliar fertiliser treatments. Based on our results, we recommend the use of foliar fertilisation in oats in drought-prone areas.

Monitoring the concentration of heavy metals in urban soils is of a paramount importance for several reasons. These inorganic pollutants can pose a significant health risk to living organisms, as they are toxic even at low concentrations and can be present in the soil for a long period of time. This study assesses the spatial distribution, concentration levels, and potential anthropogenic and natural sources of eight typical heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) occurring in urban surface soils across Debrecen, Hungary. A total of 295 topsoil samples were collected; heavy metal concentrations were determined by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry. The results were interpreted using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering, factor analysis, ordinary kriging interpolation, and spatial-discriminant analysis. The dual origin of the metal contaminants was revealed: As, Co, Pb, and Zn showed strong anthropogenic signatures associated with traffic, urban waste, and construction materials, whereas Cr and Ni were associated with natural geogenic sources. Cd reflected both lithogenic and point-source urban pollution. The current evaluation incorporated Hungarian and Dutch regulatory benchmarks to identify exceedances of environmental quality thresholds. It was found that only Cd and Cr exceeded the Hungarian target values, on average. Linear discriminant analysis based on pollution maps highlighted contamination hotspots around traffic corridors and newly industrialized zones. The importance of high-resolution soil monitoring in the rapidly urbanizing city is highlighted. Given its anticipated industrial and transportation developments, accumulations of heavy metals are probably going to be further exacerbated; therefore, the results provide a critical baseline for future environmental assessments and long-term monitoring.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an escalating global health crisis, projected to cause up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050. Conventional antibiotics are increasingly ineffective due to microbial adaptation, overuse, and disruption of gut microbiota. Nanotechnology offers promising alternatives, but traditional nanoparticle synthesis often relies on toxic chemicals and energy-intensive processes. This review explores mushroom-derived nanoparticles (myco-NPs) as sustainable, eco-friendly antimicrobials. Edible and medicinal mushrooms contain bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, flavonoids, and proteins, that act as reducing and stabilizing agents in nanoparticle biosynthesis. Myco-NPs exhibit antimicrobial activity through membrane disruption, oxidative stress, immune modulation, and biofilm inhibition, while also demonstrating synergistic effects with antibiotics and potential roles in regulating the gut microbiota. Recent advances highlight their potential applications in medicine, food safety, and environmental protection. However, challenges remain regarding standardization, safety evaluation, and large-scale production. We emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration as essential to translating mushroom-based nanotechnology into effective clinical and industrial solutions.

Extreme weather and the declining organic matter content of soils cause serious sustainability problems in agriculture. Therefore, soil conditioner composites (chicken manure, bentonite and super absorbent polymer) were developed and tested in an integrated apple orchard characterized by poor nutrient and water management to study their effects on soil, leaf and fruit attributes. Composites with higher doses of additives increased soil organic carbon by 4–9 g/kg, and organic nitrogen by 1.8–2.8 g/kg compared to the control (p < 0.05). Similarly, soil nitrate content steadily increased from 8–10 mg/kg to 30–38 mg/kg by composites. Composites effectively elevated leaf N, K, Ca, and Mg while not affecting the leaf P (p < 0.05). Treatments significantly enhanced the yields by 14–63% on average compared to the control. Treatments with bentonite improved the fruit weight by 2% and 24% compared to the chicken manure. On average, composite treatments increased the titratable acidity of fruits by 26–43% compared to the control and 0.5–10% compared to the treatment containing solely chicken manure. Overall, the developed organic-based composites are able to cope with changing circumstances that could help mitigate the negative effects of climate change, especially in arid areas, thus contributing to sustainable nutrient management.

The following study concerns Shāla, which was the necropolis of the Marīnid rulers from 683/1284 to 752/1351. The Islamic buildings on the site have rarely received scholarly attention, although these edifices – despite their delapidated condition – are among the most important constructed by the dynasty. One of my main aims is to re-establish the buildings' chronological sequence, using the written and archaeological evidence, including publications about the site written in Arabic, which have hardly been considered so far. I also address the meaning and aims behind structure erected for each founder, which, in my view, have been misinterpreted by previous scholarship. In summary, this article attempts to revise our knowledge about the site.
