Prof. Dr. Bernd Rolauffs holds a Professorship in Tissue Replacement and is Chair of the multi-disciplinary G.E.R.N. Research Center for Tissue Replacement, Regeneration & Neogenesis, University of Freiburg Medical Center in Freiburg, Germany. The G.E.R.N. team includes members of the Depts. of Orthopaedics & Trauma Surgery; Oral, Maxillofacial, & Regional Plastic Surgery; Operative Dentistry & Periodontology and Prosthetic Dentistry. Bernd aims to design and optimize biomimetic musculoskeletal tissues, develop tissue regenerative therapies, and diagnose and prevent early tissue degeneration with a large focus on traumatic joint injuries and osteoarthritis. As a unique contribution to the field, he investigates the spatial organization of cells and the cellular geometry within native tissues as an image-based biomarker to understand, diagnose and monitor healthy vs. diseased tissue states. Bernd has extensive experience in leadership roles with research, clinical and industrial partners.
