Dr. Kalyan Annamalai is currently Prof. Emeritus at Texas A&M. He received a BS from Anna University, Guindy, Chennai, an MS from Indian Inst. of Science, Bangalore, a Ph.D. from Georgia Tech, Atlanta, worked at Brown University and AVCO-Everett, Mass, joined Texas A&M in 1981 as an Assistant Professor, and was appointed Paul Pepper Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 2005. He was visiting scholar at MIT Energy laboratory, Cambridge in 2013. He is the author of books on “Advanced Thermodynamics,” (2nd Ed) and “Combustion Science and Engineering” (Taylor and Francis). His research projects dealt with energy conversion from Coal and Biomass, Alternate fuels, Gasification, and Emission of NOx and Hg. He is the author of about 300 journal publications, reviewed conference publications, abstract reviewed presentations, and technical reports mostly in the area of coal and biomass, and emissions from fossil fuels. He had applied the respiratory quotient (RQ) concept for the estimation of the global warming potential of fossil fuels. Recently, he was involved with transferring results from combustion and thermodynamics in engineering to the field of biology, involving oxygen-deficient metabolism and an explanation for organs to adjust their metabolic rate to yield Kleiber’s law, and entropy generation within the human body in predicting organ stress and lifespan. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals.
