We build a phased array system with four power-variable phase-controlled magnetrons (PCMs) by applying the injection-locking method and phase-locked-loop method. To reduce the cost and ensure the durability of the phased array, a waveguide slot array antenna was designed and used for the output antenna of power-variable PCMs. The slot antenna has an expected angle deflection of 22.5°, a gain of 24.9 dBi, and the half bandwidth of the main lobe was 10°. We demonstrated the properties of microwave beamforming and wireless power transfer based on the magnetron phased array system. In horizontal directions, a beam scanning range of ±3° was obtained by adjusting the output phase of the magnetrons. Furthermore, the received dc power reaches 142 W at a distance of 5 m when the output microwave power of the magnetron phased array is 1304 W.

To achieve a high-efficiency microwave wireless power transfer system, a high conversion efficiency rectifier is necessary. Brown (1974) designed rectifiers with approximately 3-W input power achieved 90% conversion efficiency for 2.45 GHz, and it maintains the record for maximum conversion efficiency. In this study, to design a high-efficiency and high-power rectifier, we designed a larger semiconductor metal junction area GaAs Schottky diodes possessing very low series resistance and high breakdown voltage. In addition, we built the SPICE model and package model for the diodes. The designed high conversion efficiency rectifier achieved 91% efficiency at 5-W input power for 2.45 GHz.

To meet the increasing power demands of microwave industries and scientific innovations, a dual-way magnetron (MGT) power-combining system based on an asymmetric H-plane tee combined with closed-loop phase compensation (CLPC) was developed and tested. Only one external injection was used, which could lock both frequencies of the two MGTs via the port coupling of the asymmetric H-plane tee. Additionally, phase control was achieved simultaneously in both MGTs. By tuning the external frequency, the frequencies of both MGTs could be shifted to optimize the power-combining efficiency. The optimal combining efficiency was 95.7%. By adjusting the phase of the external injection, the phase for the combining output was adjusted with a control scope in the 0°-360° range. The phase noise level of the combined output was largely inhibited by implementing only one closed-loop phase compensation subsystem. The phase jitter was limited to approximately ±0.5°, and spur suppression ratios of -61.0 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -80.9 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz, -91.6 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz, and so on were achieved. Moreover, we deduced the corresponding power-combining theories in the asymmetric H-plane tee and noise reduction using the closed-loop compensation method. The numerical predictions qualitatively agreed with the experimental results. Additionally, this research reveals that the proposed techniques have great potential for future power-combining systems because they provide higher power output and noise reduction.

This article used image recognition and beam forming technology to build a phased array with target tracking and transmitting the microwaves with a focused beam. The coordinate position of the target is obtained from the image recognition module and converted into phase information for the phased array. This system was constructed by a 1 $\times$ 4 5.764-GHz phased array with four 4-bit phase shifters. The phase shifters created a focused beam, which requires not only the target’s direction angle but also the transmission distance. The target position as well as direction and distance information were gathered using image recognition. The tracking beam method was evaluated by simulation and actual measurement. The results showed that the focused beam can always be formed in real time to track the target. The transfer efficiency of the focused beam was improved higher than that of uniform phase beam within a distance of 50 cm. The automatic tracking power transmission system has a response time of about 100 ms.

This paper proves that 2.45- and 5.8-GHz band continuous-wave magnetrons can be used to perform amplitude, phase, and frequency modulations by applying an injection-locking method. The magnetron behaved like an amplifier, and its output could follow the injection signal. In addition, we have achieved the transmission of amplitude-shift keying data at 200 kb/s as well as phase-shift keying and frequency-shift keying at 10 Mb/s. Moreover, we quantitatively discussed several demodulation performances of the injection-locked magnetrons. Finally, the transmission of audio and video information was demodulated using the injection-locked magnetrons.

We built a phased array system for high-power simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) using four 5.8-GHz injection-locked magnetrons. In the magnetron injection-locked state, the transmission efficiency was measured at different modulation rates. The fluctuation in the transmission efficiency was not more than 0.5%. We observed that dynamic beamforming does not affect communication quality. Using the magnetron phased array system, SWIPT experiments revealed that a frequency modulated (FM) signal that carries a video camera signal is transmitted and decoded during dynamic beamforming. In this SWIPT system, the main lobe transfers power, and information can be demodulated in front of the magnetron phased array from −90° to 90°. The maximum transmitted microwave power of the proposed system is 1637 W.
