Pineapple mealybug, Dysmicoccus brevipes (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a significant pest in pineapple production and a key trade barrier. We explored the potential use of ethyl formate (EF) as a methyl bromide alternative for the postharvest fumigation of D. brevipes in imported pineapples. When treated at 8 °C for 4 h, EF fumigation was effective against D. brevipes with LCt99, the lethal concentration × time product of EF necessary to achieve 99% mortality of D. brevipes nymphs and adults at 64.2 and 134.8 g h/m3, respectively. Sorption trials conducted with 70 g/m3 EF for 4 h at 8 °C using 7.5, 15 and 30% pineapple loading ratios (w/v) indicated that loading ratio lower than 30% is necessary to achieve the LCt99 values required to control D. brevipes. In a scaled up trial using 1 m3 chamber, EF fumigation with 70 g/m3 for 4 h at 8 °C with 20% pineapple loading ratio (w/v) resulted in a complete control of D. brevipes treated. There were no significant differences in hue values, sugar contents, firmness, and weight loss between EF-treated and untreated pineapples. Our results suggest that EF is a promising alternative to methyl bromide fumigation for the postharvest phytosanitary disinfection of D. brevipes in pineapples.

The tadpole shrimp (Triops longicaudatus (Leconte); Notostraca; Triopsidae) is a vernal pool crustacean that has emerged as a significant pest for many rice farmers in California. Currently, lambda-cyhalothrin is the commercial standard and sole management practice for TPS, but resistance appears to be emerging. Field and laboratory trials were conducted from 2015 to 2018 at the Rice Experiment Station in Biggs, California, and in greenhouses at the University of California (UC) Davis to evaluate the efficacy of several alternative chemical controls and to explore early indicators of TPS activity and damage as monitoring tools. TPS mortality in plots treated with azadirachtin was not significantly different from those in the untreated control across all trials. Copper sulfate, lambda-cyhalothrin, and clothianidin were consistently effective across both lab and field trials. Chlorantraniliprole generated effective control in four of the five trials, whereas two diflubenzuron rates generated adequate control in the field, but not in laboratory bioassays. Thus, there appear to be several effective alternative control options available for farmers, should resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin continue to spread. Water turbidity (measured using a scale of 1–4) and the number of dislodged seedlings were both significantly correlated with TPS counts in field studies. Turbidity exhibited the highest correlations with TPS counts, suggesting that with further refinement it could play a valuable role in monitoring TPS populations.

The effects of soluble silicon fertilization on monocots and dicots have been widely studied. However, little is known regarding its effects on protecting epiphytes against insect and fungal pests. The efficacy of silicon fertilizer to reduce damage by thrips pest complexes, namely: Thrips palmi Karny, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, Chaetanaphothrips orchidii Moulton, and Chaetanaphothrips signipennis Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and the fungal pathogens: Botrytis cinerea Persoon (Helotiales: Sclerotiniaceae) and Fusarium spp. Link (Hypocreales: Nectriaceae) was examined during a nine-month greenhouse trial in Hawaii. The trial assessed yield, quality, and pest damage across three common varieties of dendrobiums. All replicates received additional soluble silicon fertilizer applications alternating weekly between soil drench and foliar (50 mg Si/plant) applications. Yield, quality, and spray length, pest damage, plant vigor, SPAD, and leaf temperature were measured. Data were analyzed using a generalized linear model (glm) with repeated measures followed by post-hoc pair-wise comparisons in R, version 4.3.1. Treatment effects were significant at p < 0.001 for the majority of the explanatory variables including: marketable yield, spray length, thrips damage, and fungal damage. Overall, the lavender variety (‘Uniwai Supreme’) benefited the most from silicon applications with a 73.0% increase in marketable yield, compared to the white variety (‘Uniwai Mist’), which had an increase of 50.6% marketable sprays in contrast to its untreated control. Si benefits conferred to the purple variety (‘Uniwai Royale’) were intermediate to the lavender and white varieties. Although the magnitude of Si benefits varied among the varieties, all dendrobium varieties significantly benefited from silicon fertilization.

Tadpole shrimp (Triops longicaudatus) has become a major pest for California rice farmers. Currently, management relies solely on the insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin. However, resistance to this pyrethroid was confirmed in 2016, thus identifying an effective and practical biological control method for TPS is a priority. Field trials were conducted from 2017 to 2018 to: (1) evaluate the efficacy of the predatory fish Gambusia affinis and the predatory beetles, Laccophilus maculosus (Say) and Tropisternus lateralis (Fabricius), in controlling TPS, (2) test the efficacy of several inoculation rates of Gambusia affinis at controlling TPS and (3) to explore early indicators of TPS activity and damage as monitoring tools. Both Gambusia affinis and the predatory beetle treatments were not significantly different from the commercial standard (lambda-cyhalothrin). Both four and five Gambusia per 1 m2 controlled TPS as well as lambda-cyhalothrin, and we observed that Gambusia affinis was able to reproduce in the field. Water turbidity was significantly correlated with TPS counts (R = 0.85, N = 20, P < 0.0001 (2017); R = 0.58, N = 30, P = 0.0007 (2018)). The number of dislodged seedlings was less reliably correlated with TPS count; in 2017 correlations were significant (R = 0.84, N = 20, P < 0.0001), however, in 2018 correlations were not significant (R = 0.18, N = 30, P = 0.35). With further refinement water turbidity could play a valuable role in monitoring TPS populations.
