Life-cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) were applied to assess the economic feasibility and environmental benefits of utilizing multiple biomass feedstocks for bioenergy products under three different technological pathways with consideration of uncertainties. Three cases were studied for the production of pellets, biomass-based electricity, and pyrolysis bio-oil. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to examine the uncertainties of fossil energy consumption, bioenergy conversion efficiency, stochastic production rate, etc. The cradle-to-gate LCA results showed that pellet production had the lowest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water and fossil fuels consumption (8.29 kg CO2 eq (equivalent), 0.46 kg, and 105.42 MJ, respectively). The conversion process presented a greater environmental impact for all three bioenergy products. When producing 46,929 Mg of pellets, 223,380 MWh of electricity, and 78,000 barrels of pyrolysis oil, the net present values (NPV) indicated that only pellet and electricity production were profitable with NPVs of $1.20 million for pellets, and $5.59 million for biopower. Uncertainty analysis indicated that pellet production showed the highest uncertainty in GHG emission, and bio-oil production had the least uncertainty in GHG emission but had risks producing greater-than-normal amounts of GHG. Biopower production had the highest probability to be a profitable investment with 85.23%.

Activated carbons (AC) from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks are used in a broad range of applications, especially for electrochemical devices such as supercapacitor electrodes. Limited studies of environmental and economic impacts for AC supercapacitor production have been conducted. Thus, this paper evaluated the environmental and economic impacts of AC produced from lignocellulosic biomass for energy-storage purposes. The life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to quantify the potential environmental impacts associated with AC production via the proposed processes including feedstock establishment, harvest, transport, storage, and in-plant production. A techno-economic model was constructed to analyze the economic feasibility of AC production, which included the processes in the proposed technology, as well as the required facility installation and management. A base case, together with two alternative scenarios of KOH-reuse and steam processes for carbon activation, were evaluated for both environmental and economic impacts, while the uncertainty of the net present value (NPV) of the AC production was examined with seven economic indicators. Our results indicated that overall “in-plant production” process presented the highest environmental impacts. Normalized results of the life-cycle impact assessment showed that the AC production had environmental impacts mainly on the carcinogenics, ecotoxicity, and non-carcinogenics categories. We then further focused on life cycle analysis from raw biomass delivery to plant gate, the results showed that “feedstock establishment” had the most significant environmental impact, ranging from 50.3% to 85.2%. For an activated carbon plant producing 3000 kg AC per day in the base case, the capital cost would be USD 6.66 million, and annual operation cost was found to be USD 15.46 million. The required selling price (RSP) of AC was USD 16.79 per kg, with the discounted payback period (DPB) of 9.98 years. Alternative cases of KOH-reuse and steam processes had GHG emissions of 15.4 kg CO2 eq and 10.2 kg CO2 eq for every 1 kg of activated carbon, respectively. Monte Carlo simulation showed 49.96% of the probability for an investment to be profitable in activated carbon production from lignocellulosic biomass for supercapacitor electrodes.

The Saihanba Forest Farm, a leading planted forest farm, is one of the essential ecosystem service providers for the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region in China. Its efforts in afforestation and landscape restoration have been recognized with the award of the Champions of the Earth from the United Nations. However, the Saihanba Forest Farm is facing the challenges of less income resulting from less commercial cutting since it has to prioritize providing ecosystem services such as water conservation, wind prevention, sand fixation, and so on, instead of timber. It is crucial to understand providers’ attitudes toward ecosystem service provision and willingness to accept payment, as it might affect the quantity and quality of ecosystem service provision in the future. In this study, the contingent valuation method was applied to measure the willingness to accept payment for the economic losses incurred due to providing ecosystem services by cutting less wood. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the staff of the Saihanba Forest Farm. A double-hurdle regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of the willingness to accept payment, with the validation via a Tobit model. The results showed that the Saihanba Forest Farm was willing to accept a payment of CNY 9800.84 (USD 1407.24) per hectare per year for providing ecosystem services to enhance social welfare. The factors, including basic sociodemographic characteristics, attitudes toward conservation activities, and awareness on the concept of payment for ecosystem services, significantly influenced their willingness to accept payment.

Accelerating the “double carbon” transformation of the manufacturing industry is the key to achieving the strategic goal of “double carbon” in China, among which the low-carbon development of the Beijing manufacturing industry is the top priority. To achieve high-quality development of the manufacturing industry in Beijing, the main task is to reduce carbon emissions and improve efficiency. Therefore, on the basis of the Global Malmquist–Luenberger (GML) index and the system dynamics (SD) method, this study analyzes the green total-factor energy efficiency trends of 25 manufacturing sub-sectors in Beijing from 2006 to 2020 and incorporates the GML index as a key variable into the construction of the SD model. It then explores the path optimization of Beijing’s manufacturing low-carbon development in the 14th Five-Year Plan period via scenario simulation and offers policy recommendations for the green-oriented transition of Beijing’s manufacturing industry. The study finds that Beijing’s manufacturing industry needs to prioritize energy structure optimization and efficient energy utilization and give full play to the city’s advantages in technological innovation and investment while supporting high-end scientific research and innovation projects to confirm the capital city’s strategic position.

Forest biological disaster control (FBDC) is appealing the attention in China and even across the world, while the control system plays a pivotal role in the entire control work. The survey-based comprehensive indicators system was developed to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of the entropy weight model and the perceived responsibilities of the FBDC system of China from the perspective of government administrators at the province-, prefecture-, and county- levels. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Simultaneous Equations Models (SEM) were further developed to quantitatively analyze the affecting factors of the perceived effectiveness. The results indicated that the perceived effectiveness of the FBDC system in China was relatively low, with a value of 47.18 (the range is 0–100). In specific, the county level has the highest value of 48.85, while the province level has the lowest value of 42.99. The major limiting factors perceived are the insufficiency of the funds and employees. In addition, the intelligentization level, the implementation of the quarantine enforcement, the infrastructure construction, and the involvement of the local communities also need to be further improved. The salary does not positively affect the perceived effectiveness, while administrators with higher education levels and ages usually have higher salaries. Furthermore, compared with the province- and prefecture-level agencies, the county-level agencies have higher perceived effectiveness and more perceived responsibilities with higher workloads. Thus, future policies are suggested to focus on diversifying the investment sources, refining the employee recruitment and promotion system, and paying more attention to the county-level agencies. The results of this study could help to enhance the understanding of the FBDC system of China, hence improving the control efficiency and reducing the economic loss caused by forest biological disasters in China.
