I hold a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from Universidade do Sagrado Coração (USC, 1985), as well as a master’s degree (1994) and a Ph.D. (2001) in Nursing from the University of São Paulo (USP). I completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of British Columbia School of Nursing (2010–2011). Currently, I am an Associate Professor at São Paulo State University (UNESP), a Brazilian public university. I teach undergraduate nursing students and supervise graduate students in two programs: the master's program in Nursing and the graduate program in Collective Health. In the latter, I am responsible for the course Qualitative Approaches in Research. My primary research focus is on the experiences of adults, older persons, families, and health professionals in relation to the health–illness process. I lead a research group titled Methodological Approaches to Qualitative Research in Health Care, which is registered with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Brazil. I coordinate research projects funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and CNPq. I also serve as a reviewer for national and international journals, including BMC Nursing, Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP, the Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing (OBJN), Interface – Comunicação, Saúde, Educação, the Pan American Journal of Public Health, and the International Journal of Qualitative Methods, among others.
