S M Rakiul Islam was born in Sirajganj, Bangladesh, in 1990. He received a B.Sc. in in electrical and electronic engineering degree in 2013 from the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology.
In 2015, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, as a graduate student and received his Ph.D. degree in 2021. His area of expertise are batteries and power electronics. His research interests are charging algorithms, energy storage system, and power converters.
