I am currently Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of São Paulo (USP, Brazil). My Ph.D. in Physics, which was obtained from USP in 1988, was one of the first works, if not the first, on neural networks in Latin America. After completion of the Ph. D. in Brazil, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in John Hopfield’s group at the California Institute of Technology. At that time the main focus of my research was the study of both feedback and feed-forward neural networks using the analytical tools of disordered statistical mechanics. My current research interest is the understanding and mathematical modeling of the fundamental psychological laws that underlie the decision-making and problem-solving capabilities of task forces.
