The expansion of fintech credit around the world is challenging the global banking system. This study investigates the interrelationships between the development of fintech credit and the efficiency of banking systems in 80 countries from 2013 to 2017. The findings indicate a two-way relationship between them. More specifically, a negative relationship between bank efficiency and fintech credit implies that fintech credit is more developed in countries with less efficient banking systems. Meanwhile, a positive impact of fintech credit on the efficiency of banking systems suggests that fintech credit may serve as a wake-up call to the banking system. Therefore, fintech credit should be encouraged by the authorities around the world.

Price competition has been a growing concern of worldwide researchers and managers. In the aviation market, especially with the help from e-commerce platforms such as Expedia, TripAdvisor, and SkyScanner, airfares are now available to customers in the easiest and quickest way. It thus allows airlines to match their fares immediately and simultaneously upon any changes of their rivals, given that customer’ choices are made with regard to their incomes. This study provides a dataset on domestic airfares in New Zealand that could be useful for future studies in the fields of marketing, business and economics, transportation and aviation, or management. The dataset covers 12 trunk routes and 40 secondary routes in New Zealand from 19 September 2019 to 18 December 2019, a total of 90 days. It provides a rich dataset of more than 162,000 observations regarding the airfare, departure time, arrival time, flight duration, airline, departure airport, arrival airport, transiting airport, and so on. There are possibilities to extend the dataset (e.g., in terms of flying distance, airport characteristics, and airline characteristics) to make it be valuable for future study.

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a popular non-parametric approach to examine performance and productivity of airlines; however, it could not provide statistical information such as confidence intervals on the estimated efficiency scores. We combined stochastic frontier analysis and DEA into a single framework to disentangle noise and ‘pure’ inefficiency from the DEA inefficiency scores and accordingly provide confidence intervals for the estimated efficiency scores. Monte-Carlo simulation verified that our novel model is a good alternative for the conventional DEA as well as the bootstrap DEA. Empirical application using Asia-Pacific airlines’ data (2008‒2015) shows that after accounting for the ‘pure’ random errors, the sampled Asia-Pacific airlines performed well during the study period but their ‘pure’ efficiency was declining, hence, there is still room for improvement.

This study explains the differences and variances in the efficiency scores of the Vietnamese banking sector retrieved from 27 studies published in refereed academic journals under the framework of meta-regression analysis. These scores are mainly based on frontier efficiency measurements, which essentially are Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) for Vietnamese banks over the period of 2007–2019. The meta-regression is estimated by using truncated regression to obtain bias-corrected scores. Our findings suggest that only the year of publication is positively correlated with efficiency, whilst the opposite is true for the data type, and sample size.

PurposeThis study examines the corporate social responsibility (CSR) awareness of major Chinese airports during the 2013–2017 period as well as its influence on the airports' performance.Design/methodology/approachThe authors first used a content analysis to quantify CSR awareness of the examined airports reflecting their annual and CSR reports. Alongside other characteristics such as location and size, CSR awareness’ influence on the airports' performance (measured by data envelopment analysis [DEA]) was consequently examined.FindingsThe CSR awareness varies among airport and over time; however, an increasing concern about this issue is found in the Chinese airport industry. Particularly, Chinese airports tend to focus more on customers and the society and that increase of CSR awareness could improve the airports' performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors analyzed only four Chinese airports, and the data may be influenced by other factors such as politics, culture, business behaviors or management. Studies with larger sample (e.g. more airports from China and/or other countries) or with more CSR aspects and indicators will contribute to this matter.Originality/valueThis is the first study to combine the content analysis and the DEA into a single framework to examine the relationship between CSR awareness and performance, especially for Chinese airports. It can therefore provide important practical implications to Chinese aviation managers.

This paper provides a new method to define a Euclidean common set of weights (ECSW) in data development analysis (DEA) that (1) allows ranking both efficient and inefficient firms, (2) is more realistic in terms of determination of weights, and (3) generates rankings for banks consistent with their credit ratings. We first use DEA to determine the efficient frontier and then estimate a common set of weights that can minimize the Euclidean distance between the firms and that frontier. This process is illustrated by a simple numerical example and is extended to a real-life situation using the Eurozone banking sector. Our ECSW approach outperforms other common set of weights approaches in both numerical and real-life examples, and in terms of providing rankings consistent with banks’ credit ratings.

More than 100 publications were systematically reviewed on the contemporary topic of aviation subsidies and their impacts on regional wellbeing. Our results show that the US and European countries have received significant attention in prior research. Moreover, the majority of publications were concerned with air transport activity, whereas economic, social and environmental wellbeing were less researched. It was noted that a full picture of aviation subsidies' impacts on regional wellbeing remains uncertain, as the majority of prior studies have mostly examined indicators associated with air services. Our meta-regression results further suggest that subsidy types, subsidy beneficiaries, study characteristics, geographic areas and research methods are important likely sources of variation in the likelihood of investigating various wellbeing categories. It seems that a prior publication studies aviation subsidies’ impacts on environmental wellbeing over other wellbeing categories (i.e. air transport activity, economic wellbeing, and social wellbeing) is less likely to report the positive effects of aviation subsidies. Our systematic review helps identifying several directions for future studies.

This study investigates the determinants of bank profitability in 23 countries from 2002 to 2016 using the system generalized method of moments. The findings indicate that the number of bank cards issued, the number of automated teller machines (ATMs) and the number of point of sale (POS) terminals can improve bank profitability. Hence, this suggests a need for further expansion of these delivery channels. Also, the findings show the negative impact of market power on bank profitability, implying that competition improves bank profitability. Further, the positive relationship between capital market development and bank profitability suggests that they should be considered as complementary to one another.

Airport efficiency is commonly estimated via data envelopment analysis (DEA). This data-driven non-parametric approach is more flexible than the parametric approach, because it does not require an a priori function for the frontier or a very big sample size. However, DEA loses its discriminatory power when the number of observed airports is small compared with the number of airport inputs and outputs examined, particularly when examining airports within a country. In addition, the endogeneity problem may exist if one attempts to examine the determinants of airport efficiency. This study used the Slack-Based Measure (SBM) DEA-Window Analysis model to address the small sample issue during the first-stage analysis and used an instrumental variable (IV) in the Tobit model to solve the endogeneity issue during the second-stage analysis. Data from a sample of 11 New Zealand airports between 2006 and 2017 were used for analysis. The key findings showed the positive impact of tourism, regional economic development, an airport's domestic networks, airport privatisation, low-cost carrier services and the Christchurch earthquakes on New Zealand airports' performance and efficiency, whereas an airport's international networks has a negative impact. The literature contribution and policy implications are also discussed.

For a common small- to medium-sized fish farm in an agricultural-based economy, monitoring costs is very important, since financial constraints are always a problem for these farmers. This will be thus easier if the farmers can get access to external funds. This paper used data envelopment analysis (DEA) to examine the technical efficiency, cost efficiency and allocative efficiency of 639 fish farms in the Red River Delta (RRD) in Vietnam in 2018 to see how fish farmers control their costs and if financial access can really help in this matter. We found that these fish farms were very inefficient, meaning that they did not succeed in monitoring and allocating their costs and resources. Among the factors that could improve their efficiency, we found that developing the rural banking system to provide more financial access for RRD fish farms is an important solution.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the causal relationship between banking efficiency and capital market development in 86 countries between 2006 and 2011. Design/methodology/approach The authors follow the two-stage framework: data envelopment analysis (DEA) with the use of financial ratios is used to arrive at efficiency scores of the banks in the first stage. Thereafter, those efficiency scores will be linked with the development level of the capital markets of the corresponding country in the second stage using the generalised method of moments in a simultaneous equations model. Findings The authors found that banking systems around the world were still inefficient, suggesting that it would take time for the global banking system to recover after the global financial crisis 2007/2008. More importantly, the findings demonstrated that the larger the capital market is, the less efficient its banking system would be. In contrast, banking efficiency can positively influence the development of the capital market. Research limitations/implications The data are unbalanced and limited to 86 countries; the study did not analyse the productivity change over time of those banking systems; and it would be useful to test the first-stage DEA with different sets of variables as well as different assumptions. Practical implications The paper suggests that for any economy around the world, an improvement in banking performance and efficiency rather than capital market development should be a priority, alongside with monitoring inflation. Originality/value The paper provides an unbiased analysis of the causal relationship between the banking sector and the capital market.

We used stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to investigate the cost efficiency and productivity of the manufacturing sector in Vietnam from 2010 to 2016 to determine the sources of their performance. Our findings suggest that it is important for the country and its regions to create a competitive environment for the development of their local manufacturing firms. We also found that larger firms, those with a longer history and those that are more export-oriented tend to outperform their counterparts. We suggest that the sampled firms should focus more on research and development and technological implementation to shift towards a capital-intensive state and thus enhance their productivity.

This paper examines the production efficiency of 2079 rice farms in Hanoi (Vietnam) in 2018 and the role of formal and informal knowledge on their efficiency. Our empirical results showed that, in general, Hanoi’s rice farms performed quite well in 2018. The differences in the specific performance of each farm could be explained by the farmer’s characteristics (age, education and gender of the head of household) as well as by certain external factors (support programs or distance to city center). We found that self-learning through experience did not obviously improve the farm’s production efficiency whilst education and training were notably important. We further suggest that regional councils and agricultural support programs played an important role in helping farmers improve their efficiency and sustainability.

This study examines how consumers choose between airlines for domestic flights within New Zealand, where there are only two major airlines, a full-service carrier (FSC) and a low-cost carrier (LCC). Using semi-structured qualitative interviews, information about 209 participants’ most recent domestic flights is elicited. The authors identify the reason(s) behind why passengers chose their airline (i.e., post-consumption) as well as the important factor(s) in determining which airline they will fly on in the future (i.e., pre-consumption). There are 11 major reasons (post-consumption), and 10 major important factors (pre-consumption). These are associated with gender, age, occupation, citizenship, travel characteristics (frequency, recency and purpose) and whether the flight was for/from international transit. Probit regressions are used to predict airline choice based upon the pre-consumption and post-consumption themes, respectively. The findings suggest that airline managers should focus on market penetration through fundamental airline attributes (price, time and reliability) to grow market share.

This paper examines whether there is a causal relationship between bank loans and deposits in the Vietnamese banking system and the efficiency of the use of loans and deposits by the Vietnamese banks. In a country such as Vietnam, where inter-bank money markets are relatively underdeveloped, one would expect a reasonably strong relationship between deposits and loans. A pooled cross-sectional sample of financial ratios is collected from annual reports of 44 Vietnamese banks covering the period 2008–2015. The explanatory power of instrumental variables in relation to the endogenous variables is tested. A deterministic frontier model based on corrected ordinary least squares, estimated by three-stage least squares on a simultaneous equations model, is employed to derive the frontiers for the sampled banks as well as to estimate the causality between bank loans and deposits. Our findings suggest that, in an underdeveloped banking system such as Vietnam, bank deposits have a positive and significant impact on bank loans, but the reverse relationship is not significant. It is further suggested that in deposit-taking and loan-creating activities, Vietnamese banks performed moderately well over the period examined; however, in the near future, they should start to focus more on deposit-taking activities.

Purpose This paper aims to examine alternative methods for treating nonperforming loans (NPLs) in bank cost-efficiency studies using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). Design/methodology/approach The authors consider three methods of treating NPLs in SFA: as an additional control variable, as an environmental factor or as a deduction from total loans. Using data from the Vietnamese banking system (2003-2010), the authors then compare these results with those of the base model (where total loans is used regardless of the NPLs) to see which one is more appropriate for this study. Findings The authors observed that the first two methods are inappropriate for the analysis: one cannot find the significant relationship between NPLs and the banks’ total cost, and the other cannot account for any inefficiency at all. The authors suggested that the third method of separating NPLs from total loans can provide better insights. Using the proposed method, the authors showed that the cost-efficiency of Vietnamese banks over the period examined was moderate with a slight decreasing trend. When NPLs are separated, the cost-efficiency decreases in state-owned banks and big banks, whereas it increases in small and private banks. Research limitations/implications Research is limited to Vietnamese banks during a certain period, and it would be useful to apply the same technique to other data sets. Practical implications The paper suggests a new approach to account for NPLs in cost SFA studies in banking. Originality/value The paper provides a much more searching analysis of NPLs in banking than has generally been seen in previous research.

Purpose This paper aims to examine alternative methods for recording and treating costs in studies of bank efficiency. Design/methodology/approach This study used stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) models with core costs and total costs to estimate the cost efficiency of banks in two different economies, Vietnam where the banking system is under-developed (and thus is dominated by traditional banking activities) and New Zealand where the banking system is well-developed (and thus non-traditional banking activities play an important role). Findings The authors found that models using total cost tend to underestimate the banks’ cost efficiency. This underestimation relates to the extent of modern activities in a banking system: it is larger in an advanced banking system (i.e. New Zealand) and smaller in a less-developed banking system (i.e. Vietnam). Research limitations/implications Research is limited to two countries, and it would be useful to apply the same technique to other data sets. Practical implications The paper suggests a new approach to cost SFA studies in banking. Originality/value The paper provides a much more searching analysis of costs in banking than has generally been seen in previous research.
