Joachim Spergser is a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and a Group Leader at the Institute of Microbiology, Department of Pathobiology, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. He holds a Doctorate from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. From 2001 to 2014, he led the “Clinical Mycoplasmology and Epidemiology” Research Group and the Mycoplasma Diagnostics Unit at the Institute of Bacteriology, Mycology and Hygiene, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. He also served as the Deputy Head of the Institute of Bacteriology, Mycology and Hygiene from 2006 to 2013. In 2014, he earned a Habilitation (Professorial Qualification) in Microbiology and currently leads the working group “Clinical Microbiology and Animal Hygiene” and the diagnostic laboratory of the Institute of Microbiology. He is a member of various scientific organizations, such as the International Organization for Mycoplasmology, the International Research Program on Comparative Mycoplasmology, the American Society for Microbiology, the Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine, and the German Veterinary Society. He is also a reviewer for numerous international scientific journals and granting agencies.
