Following recent taxonomic, distributional, and nomenclatural revisions, an updated checklist of endemic plants on the Korean Peninsula is needed. This study provides an updated checklist of vascular plants endemic to the Korean Peninsula and describes their distribution within administrative provinces. The revised checklist includes 373 endemic taxa (304 species, six subspecies, 49 varieties, and 14 nothospecies) from 179 genera and 64 families, representing 9.5% of the total native flora of the Korean Peninsula. Asteraceae (41 taxa), Ranunculaceae (29 taxa), Liliaceae s.l. (24 taxa), and Rosaceae (22 taxa) were the most widely represented families. Compared with the most recent checklist published in 2017, 39 taxa were excluded from the checklist; one taxon was excluded because it did not have a valid published name, seven taxa were excluded because their natural habitats extended to neighboring countries, four taxa were excluded because they were treated as a rank form, and 27 taxa were excluded because they had been identified as heterotypic synonyms of taxa distributed outside of the Korean Peninsula. Fifty-two new taxa were included based on the literature. This checklist will help to focus conservation efforts and provide a framework for research, protection, and policy implementation related to these endemic taxa.

The chloroplast genome plays a crucial role in elucidating genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships. Vitis vinifera L. (grapevine) is an economically important species, prompting exploration of wild genetic resources to enhance stress resilience. We meticulously assembled the chloroplast genomes of two Korean Vitis L. species, V. flexuosa Thunb. and V. amurensis Rupr., contributing valuable data to the Korea Crop Wild Relatives inventory. Through exhaustive specimen collection spanning diverse ecological niches across South Korea, we ensured comprehensive representation of genetic diversity. Our analysis, which included rigorous codon usage bias assessment and repeat analysis, provides valuable insights into amino acid preferences and facilitates the identification of potential molecular markers. The assembled chloroplast genomes were subjected to meticulous annotation, revealing divergence hotspots enriched with nucleotide diversity, thereby presenting promising candidates for DNA barcodes. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis reaffirmed intra-genus relationships and identified related crops, shedding light on evolutionary patterns within the genus. Comparative examination with chloroplast genomes of other crops uncovered conserved sequences and variable regions, offering critical insights into genetic evolution and adaptation. Our study advances the understanding of chloroplast genomes, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic relationships within Vitis species, thereby laying a foundation for enhancing grapevine genetic diversity and resilience to environmental challenges.

The Munkhkhairkhan mountain area is a unique highland ecosystem with a diverse regional alpine flora. This mountain habitat is located at the overlap of different floristic regions: on its western side KazakhstanâTuran flora is dominating, and on the eastern side East Asian flora is observed. It is known that the whole area has a large number of endemics and rare plant species, because of its specific, harsh habitat conditions. Therefore, the flora of different habitats in the Munkhkhairkhan mountain needs to be investigated and properly protected. Munkhkhairkhan National Park has been founded in 2006, and our survey concentrated on the protected area as well as the surrounding areas of the mountains. All recorded species in this study were based on the collected voucher specimens. Conservation status for remarkable species was also reviewed based on the literature. As a result, we recorded 40 families, 150 genera, and 267 species of vascular plants, including four endemic and 34 subendemic species and 15 species' new distribution notes. Around the Munkhkhairkhan mountain, 16 very rare, 21 rare, eight endangered, and two near threatened species are growing, indicating the high conservation value of this area and the necessity for research.
