Academic stress and transitioning to young adulthood can lead medical students to develop inadequate eating habits, affecting both their physical and mental well-being and potentially compromising their ability to offer effective preventive counseling to future patients. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the levels of mindful eating and nutrition knowledge in Romanian medical students and their associations with various sociodemographic variables. Additionally, we explore the relationship between mindful eating and nutrition knowledge while accounting for sociodemographic factors and examine the impact of these factors on excess weight. Significant predictors of excess weight include high weight gain in the past year (OR = 15.8), the mindful eating questionnaire (MEQ) score (OR = 0.131), male gender (OR = 2.5), and being in the clinical years of medical school (OR = 2.2). While nutrition knowledge levels do not directly impact weight status, they share a 4% common variance with mindfulness in multivariate analysis. Notably, high weight gain is independent of the levels of mindful eating, but univariate testing links it to disinhibition and emotional response, components of mindfulness. Mindful eating stands out as independently associated with both nutrition knowledge and excess weight among medical students. Thus, interventions to address obesity should consider incorporating mindfulness training to enhance food intake awareness and improve weight management outcomes in Romanian medical students.

Background: Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) virus coinfections remain major contributors to liver-related morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV (PLWH). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of HBV and/or HCV coinfections in a Romanian HIV cohort and to evaluate their impact on immunological, virological, and liver function parameters under antiretroviral therapy (ART). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 462 HIV-infected patients (2018–2021) from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Bucharest, stratified into four groups: HIV mono-infection (n = 176), HIV/HBV (n = 114), HIV/HCV (n = 97), and HIV/HBV/HCV (n = 75) coinfections. Immunological (CD4 count, CD8 count, and CD4/CD8 ratio), virological (HIV-1 RNA), and hepatic parameters (ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin, amylase, and lipase) were compared. Results: No significant differences were observed between groups regarding the immune recovery (mean CD4 count p = 0.89, HIV-RNA suppression p = 0.78). However, liver and pancreatic parameters showed statistically significant deterioration in the coinfected groups. ALT (p < 0.001), GGT (p = 0.009), total bilirubin (p = 0.011), amylase (p = 0.010), and lipase (p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the triple-infection (HIV/HBV/HCV) group compared to HIV mono-infected patients. Coinfection was also associated with a longer duration of illness (p = 0.002) and therapy (p = 0.021) and with a higher number of ART regimens used (p = 0.013). Conclusions: While HIV suppression and immune recovery were not significantly impaired by HBV/HCV coinfections, liver and pancreatic injuries were significantly more prevalent and severe in coinfected patients. Regular monitoring of hepatic function and integrated management strategies are recommended to minimize liver-related complications in this population.

Background and objectives: Over the past few years, researchers have focused on the importance of vitamin D in the health of pregnant women and in reducing the chances of developmental disorders occurring in fetuses. In addition, a link has been established between fetal development and arterial stiffness in hypertensive disorders that occur during pregnancy. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the relationship between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) as the primary marker of vitamin D status and endothelial dysfunction, as measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV) in pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (HTN), as well as its impact on fetal development. Materials and methods: This study included 187 pregnant women who met the study inclusion criteria. Pregnant women were divided into two groups: pregnancy-induced hypertension (HTN group), which included 100 patients (53.48%), and preeclampsia (PE group), which included 87 patients (46.52%). Results: Significant differences regarding the augmentation index (Aix) brachial, PWVao, heart rate, and systolic or diastolic blood pressure with more increased values were observed for the HTN group vs. the preeclampsia group in the current research (p < 0.001). Additionally, the Aix brachial index was significantly lower in the preeclampsia group compared to the HTN group (1.76 ± 0.71 for the HTN group vs. 0.62 ± 0.5 for the preeclampsia group, p < 0.001). A severe matern serum 25(OH)D level deficiency was associated with a more severe subcategory of prematurity (p < 0.001) and with increased chances of newborn preterm birth (p < 0.05). Moreover, the negative effect of severe maternal serum 25(OH)D level deficiency was studied for each group regarding the blood pressure values, Aix brachial, PWVao values in the second and third trimesters, and fetus weight. The Kruskal–Wallis test was applied for this, obtaining significant differences in all cases: open paren p less than 0.05 and closed. When serum severe 25(OH)D levels deficiency was present, arterial stiffness parameters were significantly worse. Conclusions: The findings of this research revealed notable connections between vitamin D deficiency and increased arterial rigidity in pregnant women with preeclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension. These results emphasize the significance of conducting both examinations to obtain a more comprehensive evaluation of these patients. Utilizing pulse wave analysis as a practical approach to assessing maternal arterial stiffness in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy may prove beneficial, particularly in cases of serum 25(OH)D level deficiency. It could play a key role in identifying patients at higher risk of worsening disease severity and, thus, preventing any impact on fetal development.

A thrombophilic woman is more likely to experience difficulties during pregnancy, difficulties that will also affect the development of the newborn. This study aims to compare maternal and newborn characteristics between healthy and thrombophilic pregnancy. The following characteristics were analysed: maternal characteristics (BMI- body mass index, haemostasis parameters, thrombophilia-specific treatment) and newborn characteristics (gestational period, birth weight, the Apgar score). This follow-up study spanning five years, from 2018 to 2022, focuses on a cohort of 500 women who underwent delivery hospitalization in the western region of Romania. The maternal characteristics influence the newborn: the greater the weight of the mother with thrombophilia, the more the chances that the fetus will have a lower birth weight; increasing the dose of LMWH (low molecular weight heparin), connected with the necessity to control the homeostasis parameters, the more likely the fetus will be born with a lower birth weight. A pregnant woman with thrombophilia, treated appropriately, having a normal weight, and not presenting other risk factors independent of thrombophilia, will have a newborn with characteristics similar to a healthy pregnant woman.

Introduction: In developed countries, heart disease is the primary cause of maternal mortality during pregnancy. Arterial stiffness, an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and a predictor of cardiovascular complications, can be assessed using the augmentation index (AIx) and pulse wave velocity (PWV). In this prospective study, we aimed to evaluate diverse hemodynamic parameters and arterial stiffness in pregnant women before and after participating in a structured, personalized exercise training program. Materials and methods: Forty healthy pregnant women, non-smokers, who agreed to participate daily for 12 weeks in a physical exercise training program under the supervision of a team made up of an obstetrician, a cardiologist, and a physiotherapist were included. Anthropometric characteristics, arterial function, and physical activity data were collected from the participants at two different time points: at the beginning of the exercise training program (T0) and at the end, after 12 weeks (T1). Results: Upon conducting a statistical analysis, it was discovered that there were noteworthy disparities (p = 0.05) in body mass index, brachial AIx, systolic blood pressure, and pulse pressure values between the two time points. The regression analysis for the AIx brachial values and the PWVao values from Trim II (T0) and Trim III (T1) showed major differences between these two time points; the association between the AIx brachial values in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy revealed a strong direct significant correlation (p < 0.001), and the correlation between the PWVao values in the second (T0) and third trimester (T1) of pregnancy was weak and insignificant (p = 0.12). Conclusions: The findings of our study indicate that a personalized exercise training program positively impacts the physical and psychological well-being of pregnant women, leading to a reduction in PWV.

Background: Young adulthood represents a critical period for the emergence of early metabolic disturbances, potentially influenced by dietary shifts toward convenience and ultra-processed foods. However, evidence linking dietary patterns and cooking practices with objective metabolic biomarkers in Romanian university students remains limited. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 693 students aged 18–24 years at the Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Romania (June–July 2025). Dietary habits, food preferences, and cooking practices were assessed using a structured online questionnaire, while anthropometric and biochemical data were obtained from university health records. The primary outcome was glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a marker of average blood glucose levels over the previous 2–3 months. Prediabetes was defined as HbA1c 5.7–6.4%. Dietary patterns were identified using k-means clustering based on fast-food consumption frequency, main meal of the day, fruit and vegetable intake frequency, and predominant cooking method. Multivariable regression models assessed associations between dietary variables and glycemic or lipid outcomes. Results: Prediabetes prevalence was 21.1% (diabetes: 1.4%). Three dietary patterns were identified: health-conscious (prediabetes 15.4%), mixed (20.0%), and fast-food oriented (27.3%; χ2 p = 0.003). Fast-food consumption frequency was independently associated with higher prediabetes risk (OR = 1.78 per category; 95% CI 1.38–2.30; p < 0.001) and higher HbA1c levels (β = 0.147; p < 0.001), while fruit and vegetable intake showed an inverse association with HbA1c (β = −0.109; p < 0.001). A dose–response relationship was observed between fast-food frequency and both HbA1c and prediabetes prevalence (p-trend < 0.001). An interaction between high-temperature cooking methods and frequent fast-food consumption was observed for HbA1c (p = 0.023). BMI and sex were the strongest predictors of lipid outcomes, although fast-food intake was associated with higher triglyceride levels (p = 0.034). Conclusions: Among Romanian university students, dietary patterns characterized by frequent fast-food consumption were associated with higher HbA1c levels and greater prediabetes prevalence. A high-temperature cooking method was associated with higher glycemic levels when combined with frequent fast-food intake. These findings suggest that early dietary behaviors during university years may be relevant for metabolic risk profiles in young adults.
