In order to better understand the role of coal gangue in potential environmental and ecological risks, the leaching behavior of trace elements from coal gangue has been investigated in an open-cast coal mine, Inner Mongolia, China. Four comparative column leaching experiments were conducted to investigate the impacts of leaching time, pH values and sample amount on the leaching behavior of trace elements. Enrichment factors (EF), maximum leached amount (Lam), maximum leachability (Lrm), effects range low (ERL) and effects range median (ERM) were employed to evaluate potential environmental and ecological hazards resulting from the leaching behavior of environment-sensitive trace elements from coal gangue. Leaching time and sample amount display important effects on trace element concentrations, leached amounts and leachability. The pH values exhibit a weak influence on the leaching behavior of the selected trace elements (e.g., As, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Cd, Sn, Pb and Hg). The coal gangue are enriched in As, Co, Se and Pb and, in particular, show higher environmental pollution levels of As and Se (EF > 2). Lam values suggest that all of the elements investigated do not show potential risk to soils and vegetation, but have a high hazard risk for ground water. Elements including Ni, As, Cr and Zn are inclined to show high or moderate biological toxicity.

Coal is the most important fossil energy used in China. The environmental impact of trace elements released in coal combustion has become one of the hottest issues in recent years. Based on a software named CiteSpace, and social network analysis (SNA), a bibliometric analysis of research into trace elements in coal and ash field during 1971–2017 is presented with the information of authors, countries, institutions, journals, hot issues and research trends in the present study. The study results indicate that: (1) Shifeng Dai, Robert B Finkelman, Guijian Liu and James C Hower have a large number of publications with great influence. (2) China (29.8%) and USA (22.2%) have high productivity in total publications. China and the USA correlate closely in the cooperative web system. (3) China University of Mining and Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences take the leading position in the quantity of publications among all research institutions. (4) Energy and fuels, engineering and environmental science are three disciplines with the most studies in this field. (5) International Journal of Coal Geology, Fuel, Energy and Fuels and Fuel Processing Technology are the top four journals with the most publications in this field. (6) The enrichment origin and modes of occurrence of trace elements are the mainstream research related to trace elements in coal and ash. The environmental problems caused by coal combustion have promoted the development of trace elements in coal research, and human health is getting more and more popular in recent years. The study findings provide a better understanding of features of trace elements in coal and ash research, which could be taken as a reference for future studies in this field.

In this study, soil samples were collected from a large-scale open-cast coal mine area in Inner Mongolia, China. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), beryllium (Be) and nickel (Ni) in soil samples were detected using novel collision/reaction cell technology (CCT) with inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS; collectively ICP-CCT-MS) after closed-vessel microwave digestion. Human health risk from As, Cd, Be and Ni was assessed via three exposure pathways—inhalation, skin contact and soil particle ingestion. The comprehensive carcinogenic risk from As in Wulantuga open-cast coal mine soil is 6.29–87.70-times the acceptable risk, and the highest total hazard quotient of As in soils in this area can reach 4.53-times acceptable risk levels. The carcinogenic risk and hazard quotient of Cd, Be and Ni are acceptable. The main exposure route of As from open-cast coal mine soils is soil particle ingestion, accounting for 76.64% of the total carcinogenic risk. Considering different control values for each exposure pathway, the minimum control value (1.59 mg/kg) could be selected as the strict reference safety threshold for As in the soil environment of coal-chemical industry areas. However, acceptable levels of carcinogenic risk are not unanimous; thus, the safety threshold identified here, calculated under a 1.00 × 10−6 acceptable carcinogenic risk level, needs further consideration.

Influenced by historical background, regional economic development, and the frequent occurrence of armed conflict, the human–earth relationship in the Central and Southern Peninsula, which is located in a “fragmented zone”, is characteristic of the region. The Indochina Peninsula has now become an area of interest for the study of spatial changes in production–living–ecological spaces (PLES). Taking the Indochina Peninsula as the study area, this paper explores the evolution of the spatiotemporal patterns of PLES and its driving mechanism in the Indochina Peninsula, from 2010 to 2020, based on a grid scale. Methods such as the land-use transition matrix, land-use dynamics index, and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) were used in our model, which will provide the basic data and reference for sustainable development planning across the Indochina Peninsula. Our results show that, from 2010 to 2020, ecological space dominated the PLES pattern on the Indochina Peninsula, but its area gradually decreased, accompanied by a sharp increase in the areas of productive and living spaces. The area of PLES interconversion on the Indochina Peninsula in 2010–2020 was 212,818.70 km2, and the intertransfer of production and ecological spaces was distributed in a networklike manner throughout the Indochina Peninsula, while the transfer of living space was distributed in a pointlike manner. The migration path of the center of gravity of PLES on the Indochina Peninsula demonstrated a significant directional difference, and the direction and extent of the standard deviation ellipse distribution of the ecological space was similar to that of the production space. The PLES’s pattern evolution was affected by the degree of multiple factors, with a significant spatial and temporal heterogeneity. The positive and negative feedback effects of the factors were distributed in different areas and in different transfer directions.

Groundwater level (GWL) in unconfined aquifers is highly susceptible to climate variables and human activities, exhibiting nonlinear fluctuations; these can further contribute to or exacerbate environmental hazards, such as land subsidence. Understanding the relationship between GWL changes and external conditions is essential for effective groundwater resource management and ecological protection. However, this relationship remains unclear and variable. This study systematically analyzes the correlations between climate and human factors and GWLs, using data from monitoring stations in the unconsolidated sedimentary aquifers of Beijing, China. It evaluates the importance of influencing factors on GWL simulation accuracy and tests how different inputs affect simulation performance. The results indicate that human factors are more strongly correlated with GWLs, yet climate factors hold higher importance scores. In GWL simulations, different input variables yield varying accuracy, with the inclusion of precipitation notably decreasing simulation precision because of its lagged or indirect effects on groundwater levels. The variation in accuracy across monitoring stations further suggests that the primary differences may stem from the GWL data itself. These findings underscore the need for high-resolution, localized data and tailored input selection to improve GWL projections and inform adaptive water-resource strategies under changing climatic and anthropogenic pressures.

As a mining country, China faces enormous challenges in the context of the global commitment to achieve carbon neutrality. In order to achieve this goal, the Chinese government is actively promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of the energy system. Consequently, an increasing number of mines with poor production capacity and depleted resources are being closed down or eliminated, leading to a large quantity of stranded land resources that are now idle. However, in the process of rapid economic development, China is facing serious problems, such as land shortage and land use conflicts. Abandoned mining land (AML), as a kind of reserve land resource, has an important regulating role in solving the dilemma of land resource tension faced by national land spatial planning. In order to realize the rational planning and utilization of AML, this study proposes a high-precision AML planning model and simulates the planning of AML in multiple policy scenarios, using Ningbo City as an example. The results show that AML has great economic and ecological potential; the economic development scenario (EDS) enhanced the economic benefits of the mine region by 396%, and the ecological protection scenario (EPS) enhanced the ecological benefits of the mine region by 74.61%, when compared with the baseline scenario (BAU). The overall level of optimization is as follows: EDS > EPS > BAU. In addition, the optimal utilization of AML in all three scenarios significantly enhanced the ecological quality of the mining region, and the enhancement effect was EPS > BAU > EDS. Therefore, AML, as a kind of free land resource, has an important supporting effect for the spatial planning of the national territory. Furthermore, it is of great significance to scientifically and reasonably guide the optimal utilization of AML, according to the policy planning for future development, in order to achieve efficient economic development and improve the quality of the ecological environment.
