The integrated radar jamming and secure communication system providing both false target and high physical layer transmission security will play an important role in future electronic warfare systems. In this letter, we present and experimentally validate a novel photonics-based integrated system that combines radar jamming with secure communication. The system incorporates velocity and range false targets generation for effective radar deception jamming, along with a secure communication function boasting a remarkable key space of 10 156 with the help of Li's hyperchaotic model. The Ka-band radar deception jamming and chaotic encrypted communication signals are simultaneously generated by a photonic frequency upconverter, which consists of a Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM), an optical filter, an in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) modulator, and dual-drive Mach–Zehnder modulator (DDMZM), and a photodetector (PD). In a proof-of-concept experiment, the generated velocity deception jamming signal extended beyond 40 GHz, achieving a remarkable spurious suppression ratio of over 30 dB. The range deception jamming is also investigated. Meanwhile, the chaotic encrypted 4 Gbaud 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and 32 quadrature amplitude modulation (32QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals over a distance of 1 m are successfully demonstrated. The proposed scheme can reduce enemy radar detection capabilities and enhance communication security ability, which is required by future electronic warfare systems.

We propose an adaptive time-delayed photonic reservoir computing (RC) structure by utilizing the Kalman filter (KF) algorithm as training approach. Two benchmark tasks, namely the Santa Fe time-series prediction and the nonlinear channel equalization, are adopted to evaluate the performance of the proposed RC structure. The simulation results indicate that with the contribution of adaptive KF training, the prediction and equalization performance for the benchmark tasks can be significantly enhanced, with respect to the conventional RC using a training approach based on the least-squares (LS). Moreover, by introducing a complex mask derived from a bandwidth and complexity enhanced chaotic signal into the proposed RC, the performance of prediction and equalization can be further improved. In addition, it is demonstrated that the proposed RC system can provide a better equalization performance for the parameter-variant wireless channel equalization task, compared with the conventional RC based on LS training. The work presents a potential way to realize adaptive photonic computing.

The severe band-limited effect resulted from the low-cost optical transceiver increases the channel memory length and the number of taps of the equalizers. Besides, the interaction of fiber dispersion and square-law detection introduce nonlinear distortions in intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission systems. The serious band-limited effect and nonlinear distortions degrade the transmission performance and bring challenges to current equalizers for low-complexity implementation. In this paper, we propose a trellis-compression nonlinear maximum likelihood sequence estimation (TC-NL-MLSE) algorithm to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions with lower complexity. In the TC-NL-MLSE, we introduce a polynomial nonlinear filter (PNLF) to partly compensate both the linear distortions and nonlinear distortions. Then, we establish a look-up-table (LUT) to calculate the nonlinear branch metric (BM). To simplify the calculation, two or three levels with the highest probabilities are selected according to decision thresholds for each symbol to compress the state-trellis graph (STG). This significantly reduces computational complexity on BM calculations especially for high-order modulations. We conduct experiments to transmit beyond the 200-Gb/s PAM-8 signal over 2-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) at C-band. The TC-NL-MLSE outperforms the reduced-state MLSE with PNLF, and can reach the 7%-overhead hard-decision forward error correction threshold. Moreover, the TC-NL-MLSE reduces the complexity by 97% compared with standard LUT-MLSE, limiting the multipliers around 100 at the expense of only 0.2-dB receiver sensitivity penalty.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multi-channel chaos generation scheme, which can simultaneously produce multiple chaotic signals with wideband spectrum and suppressed time-delay signature (TDS). In this scheme, we introduce an external self-phase-modulated feedback (ESPMF) to improve the optical bandwidth of the initial chaos generated by a conventional external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL), then optical tunable filters (OTFs) are utilized to simultaneously extract three-channel chaotic outputs. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has three main advantages. Firstly, it can simultaneously generate multiple chaotic outputs with different central wavelengths and low correlations. Secondly, the bandwidth of original ECSL-based chaos can be improved by several times, and the undesired TDS characteristics in the original chaos can be completely suppressed to an indistinguishable level (lower than 0.02). Thirdly, the bandwidths of these chaotic outputs are flexible and can be adjusted within a wide range of 20 GHz by controlling the filter bandwidths. In addition, we demonstrate an application of the proposed chaos generation scheme in random bit generation (RBG), and multi-channel high-speed random bit sequences with a total generation rate over Tb/s and NIST verified randomness are simultaneously obtained.

Aggregated 17.125Gb/s real-time end-to-end dual-band optical OFDM (OOFDM) transmissions over 25km SSMF IMDD systems with 7dB receiver sensitivity improvements are experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, by utilizing low-cost transceiver components such as directly modulated 1GHz RSOAs and DACs/ADCs operating at sampling speeds as low as 4GS/s. The demonstrated OOFDM transceivers have both strong adaptability and sufficiently large passband carrier frequency tunability, which enable full use of highly dynamic spectral characteristics of the transmission systems. This results in the achievements of not only excellent performance robustness to variations in system operating conditions but also significantly relaxed requirements on RSOA small-signal modulation bandwidth. It is shown that the aforementioned transmission capacity only varies by <23% over a RSOA-injected optical power variation range as large as 20dB, and that the 1GHz RSOAs can support successful transmissions of adaptively modulated OOFDM signals having bandwidths of 8.5GHz. By taking into account the adopted 25% cyclic prefix and a typical 7.3% FEC overhead, the demonstrated real-time OOFDM transmission systems are capable of conveying 11.6Gb/s user data.

We experimentally demonstrate an elliptical-aperture multimode diversity receiver to mitigate the impairment from anisotropic turbulence, which is emulated by employing an electrically-controlled heater. The anisotropy gradually decreases as the flow-level of the introduced airflow from fans increases. In contrast to circular-aperture reception, the elliptical-aperture multimode diversity receiver can effectively resist beam wander under anisotropic turbulence, reducing outage probability from 14.63% to 0.38% for detecting a dual-polarization 30-Gbaud QPSK signal. Without the aid of an adaptive optics system, this work demonstrates the feasibility of realizing an anisotropic-turbulence-resistant FSO link using multimode and multi-aperture diversity reception employing digital coherent combining techniques.
