The role of land surface temperature (LST) is of the utmost importance in multiple academic disciplines, such as climatology, hydrology, ecology, and meteorology. To date, many methods have been proposed to estimate LST from satellite thermal infrared data. The single-channel (SC) algorithm can provide an accurate result in retrieving LST based on prior knowledge of known land surface emissivity (LSE). The SC algorithm is extensively employed for retrieving LST from Landsat series data due to its simplicity and its reliance on just one thermal infrared channel. The Thermal Infrared Sensor (IRS) on the Chinese ZY1-02E satellite is a pivotal instrument employed for gathering thermal infrared (TIR) data of land surfaces. The objective of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of a single-channel approach based on water vapor scaling (WVS) for deriving LST from ZY1-02E IRS data because of its wide spectrum range, i.e., 7~12 μm, which is affected strongly by both atmospheric water vapor and ozone. Three study areas, namely the Baotou, Heihe River Basin, and Yantai Sea sites, were selected as validation sites to evaluate the LST inversion accuracy. This evaluation was also conducted via cross-comparison between the retrieved LST and MODIS LST products. The results revealed that the WVS-based method exhibited an average bias of 0.63 K and an RMSE of 1.62 K compared to the in situ LSTs. The WVS-based method demonstrated reasonable accuracy through cross-validation with the MODIS LST product, with an average bias of 0.77 K and an RMSE of 2.0 K. These findings indicate that the WVS-based method is effective in estimating LST from ZY1-02E IRS data.

Following the launch of the ZY1-02E satellite, the thermal infrared sensor aboard the satellite experienced alterations in the space environment, leading to varying degrees of attenuation in some components. The laboratory calibration accuracy could not satisfy the demands of quantitative production, and a certain degree of deviation was observed in on-orbit calibration. To accurately characterize the on-orbit radiation properties of thermal infrared remote sensing payloads, an absolute radiometric calibration campaign was carried out at the Ulansuhai Nur and Baotou calibration sites in Inner Mongolia in July 2022. This paper outlines the processes of onboard calibration and vicarious calibration for the ZY1-02E satellite, comparing the outcomes of onboard calibration with those of vicarious calibration. The onboard calibration method involved internal calibration, while the vicarious calibration method utilized an on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration technique based on various natural features that were not constrained by satellite–Earth spectrum matching requirements. Calibration coefficients were acquired, and the absolute radiometric calibration results of on-orbit vicarious and onboard calibration were compared, analyzed, and verified using the radiance computed from measured data and the reference sensor data. The accuracy of on-orbit absolute vicarious calibration was determined, and the causes for the decline in the radiation calibration accuracy on the orbiting satellite were examined. The findings revealed that the vicarious calibration results exhibited a lower percentage of radiance deviation compared with the onboard calibration results, meeting the quantitative requirements of remote sensing data. These results were significantly better than those obtained from onboard blackbody calibration, offering a data foundation for devising satellite calibration plans and enhancing calibration algorithms. In the future, the developmental trend of on-orbit radiometric calibration technology will encompass high-precision and slow-attenuation onboard calibration techniques, as well as high-frequency and simplified-step vicarious calibration methods.

Global high-precision and high timeliness land cover data is a fundamental and strategic resource for global strategic interest maintenance, global environmental change research, and sustainable development planning. However, due to difficulties in obtaining control and reference information from overseas, a single data source cannot effectively cover, and surface coverage classification faces significant challenges in information extraction. Based on this, this article proposes an intelligent interpretation method for typical elements based on multimodal fusion, starting from the characteristics of domestic remote sensing images. It also develops an optical SAR data conversion and complementarity strategy based on convolutional translation networks, as well as a typical element extraction algorithm. This solves the problems of sparse remote sensing images, limited effective observations, and difficult information recognition, thereby achieving automation of typical element information under dense observation time series High precision extraction and analysis.

For addressing the technical challenges of photon denoising and water level extraction in ICESat-2 satellite-based water monitoring applications, this paper proposes an innovative solution integrating Gaussian function fitting with Hough transform. The method first employs histogram Gaussian fitting to achieve coarse denoising of water body regions. Subsequently, a probability attenuation model based on elevation differences between adjacent photons is constructed to accomplish refined denoising through iterative optimization of adaptive thresholds. Building upon this foundation, the Hough transform technique from image processing is introduced into photon cloud processing, enabling robust water level extraction from ICESat-2 data. Through rasterization, discrete photon distributions are converted into image space, where straight lines conforming to the photon distribution are then mapped as intersection points of sinusoidal curves in Hough space. Leveraging the noise-resistant characteristics of the Hough space accumulator, the interference from residual noise photons is effectively eliminated, thereby achieving high-precision water level line extraction. Experiments were conducted across five typical water bodies (Qinghai Lake, Long Land, Ganquan Island, Qilian Yu Islands, and Miyun Reservoir). The results demonstrate that the proposed denoising method outperforms DBSCAN and OPTICS algorithms in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and computational efficiency. In water level estimation, the absolute error of the Hough transform-based line detection method remains below 2 cm, significantly surpassing the performance of mean value, median value, and RANSAC algorithms. This study provides a novel technical framework for effective global water level monitoring.

Earth’s frozen water reserves are inherently dynamic and play a critical role in the hydrological processes of complex, dynamic river basins. Climate-driven environmental changes have led to a significant decrease in the area and duration of seasonal snow cover, particularly in the high-altitude Asian Water Tower (Himalaya). Snow cover estimates are challenging in the high-altitude Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region, which is a core contributor to water resources that sustain the environment and diverse downstream ecosystems that support more than half of the Earth’s population. This study quantifies the snow cover area over the period of 1993–2023 across the basins of ten major snow- and rainfall-dominated rivers in the HKH region using Landsat-based Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI), SNOMAP, Blue Snow Threshold (BST), and Dozier and Painter methods. Additionally, this study used 178 strategically positioned points across the HKH region to explore the relationship between snow cover dynamics and environmental factors such as temperature, precipitation, and greenhouse gas concentrations. The study observed significant temporal and spatial variations in snow cover, driven by regional climatic conditions and anthropogenic influences. The results revealed declining snow cover trends of 2793.15, 2108.86, 1199.49, 247.51, 230.34, and 169.39 km2/year for the Amu Darya, Indus, Yangtze, Tarim, Mekong, Ganges, and Brahmaputra River basins, respectively. Conversely, the Salween, Yellow, and Irrawaddy River basins showed a slight increase of 1002.66, 147.06, and 20.86 km2/year, respectively. These opposing trends underline the vulnerability of snow mass to water supply and hydropower scheduling, stressing the urgent need for integrated, long-term satellite and ground-based observation platforms, as well as robust hydrological and glaciological modeling. A strategic blend of remotely sensed snow cover data and locally calibrated climate and land-use records will empower decision-makers to predict water security threats and refine reservoir operation guidelines, thereby sustaining both socio-economic and ecosystem services across the principal river corridors.
