Recently, evolutionary multitasking (EMT) has been successfully used in the field of high-dimensional classification. However, the generation of multiple tasks in the existing EMT-based feature selection (FS) methods is relatively simple, using only the Relief-F method to collect related features with similar importance into one task, which cannot provide more diversified tasks for knowledge transfer. Thus, this paper devises a new EMT algorithm for FS in high-dimensional classification, which first adopts different filtering methods to produce multiple tasks and then modifies a competitive swarm optimizer to efficiently solve these related tasks via knowledge transfer. First, a diversified multiple task generation method is designed based on multiple filtering methods, which generates several relevant low-dimensional FS tasks by eliminating irrelevant features. In this way, useful knowledge for solving simple and relevant tasks can be transferred to simplify and speed up the solution of the original high-dimensional FS task. Then, a competitive swarm optimizer is modified to simultaneously solve these relevant FS tasks by transferring useful knowledge among them. Numerous empirical results demonstrate that the proposed EMT-based FS method can obtain a better feature subset than several state-of-the-art FS methods on eighteen high-dimensional datasets.

The competitive swarm optimizer (CSO) classifies swarm particles into loser and winner particles and then uses the winner particles to efficiently guide the search of the loser particles. This approach has very promising performance in solving large-scale multiobjective optimization problems (LMOPs). However, most studies of CSOs ignore the evolution of the winner particles, although their quality is very important for the final optimization performance. Aiming to fill this research gap, this article proposes a new neural net-enhanced CSO for solving LMOPs, called NN-CSO, which not only guides the loser particles via the original CSO strategy, but also applies our trained neural network (NN) model to evolve winner particles. First, the swarm particles are classified into winner and loser particles by the pairwise competition. Then, the loser particles and winner particles are, respectively, treated as the input and desired output to train the NN model, which tries to learn promising evolutionary dynamics by driving the loser particles toward the winners. Finally, when model training is complete, the winner particles are evolved by the well-trained NN model, while the loser particles are still guided by the winner particles to maintain the search pattern of CSOs. To evaluate the performance of our designed NN-CSO, several LMOPs with up to ten objectives and 1000 decision variables are adopted, and the experimental results show that our designed NN model can significantly improve the performance of CSOs and shows some advantages over several state-of-the-art large-scale multiobjective evolutionary algorithms as well as over model-based evolutionary algorithms.

Edge computing is an effective complementary technology to cloud computing, allowing end devices to offload tasks onto edge base stations (BSs) to satisfy the quality of experience of consumers. Due to the limitation of storage and computing resources, a single BS cannot satisfy the heavy computing tasks. In this regard, multi-BS collaboration is an effective way to alleviate this issue. Moreover, service caching and cloud-edge collaboration computing also show attractive advantages in handling the surging data traffic. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is rarely work that consider all of the aforementioned scenarios simultaneously. To fill this research gap, this paper comprehensively considers the computing offloading problem in sustainable edge computing based on the above scenarios. Specifically, the computing offloading problem is first modeled as a multi-objective optimization problem with the purpose of minimizing the delay and energy consumption. Then, a two-stage hybrid multi-objective optimization evolutionary algorithm, called TH-MOEA, is designed to address the above formulated problem, which uses a novel competitive swarm optimizer to accelerate convergence in the early evolutionary stage and adopts a diversity-enhanced immune algorithm to improve diversity in the later evolutionary stage. Simulation results show that TH-MOEA outperforms several state-of-the-art peer methods.

Service providers tend to deploy application services to several different virtual machines (VMs) to improve the scalability and manageability of the cloud data center (CDC). Therefore, high frequency communication traffic is always involved among those VMs that are deployed the same application service. In order to reduce the communication cost (CC) of CDC, all VMs running the same service should be redeployed in the same subnet as much as possible by using live migration technology, because CC between VMs in different subnets is much higher than that within the same subnet. On the other hand, the migration time (MT) to complete all migration tasks is also crucial for providers and customers, because a prolonged MT will lead to the increased maintenance cost and the deterioration of quality of service (QoS). To address the aforementioned issues, this paper proposes an efficient service-aware VM scheduling approach (ES-VSA) based on a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to minimize CC and MT, simultaneously. Finally, experiments are conducted on four different scenarios, and the simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is superior to several state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both CC and MT.
