Polypyrrole magnetic graphene oxide (PPy/MGO) composites has been synthesized from natural source (water hyacinth roots) using polymerization technique for Th(IV) ions pre-concentration from aqueous solutions. The effects of controlling factor have been studied using batch technique. The obtained results show that the maximum Th(IV) adsorption capacity by PPy/MGO composite is 277.8 mg/g at pH 4, which is higher than traditional adsorbents. PPy/MGO composite also presents excellent regeneration/reuse property. Due to the high adsorption capacity of Th(IV), PPy/MGO composite can be used in nuclear fuel achievement and for Th(IV) environmental pollution cleanup.

A novel nanocaptor (GO-HDX) was designed based on the graphene oxide nanosheets functionalized with hydroxamate moieties that enabled the selective removal and recovery of extremely radioactive uranyl ions from wastewater samples. The synthesized nanocaptor (GO-HDX) was well-characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The U(VI) removal from aqueous solution with GO-HDX was investigated in terms of essential factors (initial pH, contact time and temperature), adsorption isotherm and thermodynamics were examined. The UO22+ ions adsorption under the studied conditions was well-fitted to the Freundlich model as well as to the pseudo-first-order model.

A designed new adsorbent by coupling chitosan and 1-Amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid to get an excellent synergistic effect of 1-Amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic coupled chitosan (ANSC) which used for the removal of tetravalent thorium ions. The modified chitosan adsorbent was identified by BET isotherm studies, elemental analysis, SEM, EDX and FT-IR, techniques. The FT-IR confirmed the structure of the modified chitosan. Langmuir isotherm model described the adsorption results with the 252.57 mg/g maximum adsorption capacity. It should be perceived that the thorium ions adsorption matched more careful with the kinetics pseudo-second-order. It was found that the adsorption of Th(IV) is strongly dependent on pH and time.

Graphene oxide-1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid (GOANS) adsorbent synthesised successfully from a natural source (Cattle bones) for the U(VI) ions removal from liquid waste solutions. The synthesised adsorbent characterised via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) Surface Area Analysis, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX) pattern and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Various experimental parameters (time, adsorbent weight, initial uranium concentration and temperature) investigated and the results reveal that a higher uptake capacity of 311.5 mg/g achieved at pH 4 within 60 minutes. The obtained findings fitted well with thermodynamic, isothermal (Langmuir and Freundlich model) and pseudo second order kinetics. The negative sign of (ΔG∘) specified the spontaneity of adsorption process in the thermodynamic study, ΔH∘ (endothermic) and positive sign ΔS∘ indicate high randomness after adsorption.

Phosphate-grafted chitin (PGC) was synthesized for thorium adsorption from acid solutions. FTIR analysis shows that the phosphate and amide groups of PGC are involved in the adsorption. The Th(IV) adsorption is pH-dependent and is maximal at pH 3.5. The adsorption kinetics is described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model is 50.5 mg Th(IV)/g at 25°C. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic. The phosphate-grafted chitin can be reused by activating its surface with 0.5 M HCl–0.1 M EDTA.

A new trend for the recovery of uranium from hydrous oxide cake produced after alkali breakdown of Rosetta monazite mineral concentrate via Di-ethylene Tri-amine Penta Acetic acid (DTPA) lixiviate was applied. The procedure based on the selective chelating behavior of Di-ethylene Tri-amine Penta Acetic acid (DTPA) towards both Th(IV) (98%) and REEs (99%) leaving uranium alone”. Both the reaction mechanism and kinetic studies of the dissolution process have been interpreted. The results show that the dissolution mechanism of thorium and REEs were chemically controlled and the recorded activation energy was 30.03 and 35.258 kJ/mol for Th(IV) and REEs respectively.
