Dr. Alessandro Di Nuovo is a Professor of Machine Intelligence at the Department of Computing, Sheffield Hallam University. He received the Laurea (MSc Eng.) and the Ph.D. in Informatics Engineering from the University of Catania, Italy, in 2005 and 2009, respectively. He is the leader of AI, Robotics, and Digital for the Advanced Well-being Research Institute. He is the funder and leader of the Smart Interactive Technologies (SIT) Research Laboratory, which has cutting-edge facilities and equipment for advanced machine learning and human–robot interaction experiments. His research is currently focused on computational intelligence for the design, development, and experimental validation of computational models of human cognition in robots (autonomous motor control via mental imagery, finger counting, and number cognition), including their application to human–robot interaction in healthcare and social environments (autism therapy and diagnosis, elderly care, robot companions, and co-workers).
