In this work, using the method of moments and starting from a singularity found by Akhmediev and co-workers, very high-amplitude solitons of the cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg–Landau equation are predicted in both the normal and anomalous dispersion regimes. The propagation and the main characteristics of such very high-amplitude solitons are investigated in both dispersion regimes. Moreover, the region of existence of these pulses is numerically found in the plane defined by the dispersion and the nonlinear gain saturation parameters. In general, numerical computations are in good agreement with the predictions based on the method of moments when a quartic trial function is assumed. We show that choosing an appropriate signal for the reactive quintic nonlinearity parameter can provide an extension of the region of existence of the above pulses. High-energy ultrashort pulses are found mainly in the normal dispersion region, which is in agreement with the experimental observations reported by other authors.

The complex Ginzburg–Landau equation is solved numerically and three types of pulsating pulses are obtained: plain pulsating, erupting, and creeping solitons. We discuss the main characteristics of these pulses and demonstrate the possibility of converting them into fixed-shape pulses under the influence of some higher-order effects.

The layered spiral microstructured optical fiber (LS-MOF) design allows higher nonlinearities than the most common microstructured optical fibers. Here, we have chosen a highly nonlinear glass for its composition, the arsenic trisulfide, and we have determined its dispersion and nonlinear characteristics. After adjusting the fiber’s parameters, we obtained a record value for the nonlinear parameter of 50.7[Formula: see text]W[Formula: see text]m[Formula: see text], at 1.550[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m. We have simulated light propagation under these optimized circumstances, achieving a broad supercontinuum, extending from 500[Formula: see text]nm to 3900[Formula: see text]nm, in a very short distance: 0.3[Formula: see text]mm.

The effective non-linear parameter of a highly non-linear optical fiber was measured using the four-wave mixing effect. A value of γ = 10.6 W–1/km was obtained for a small wavelength separation between pump and signal waves, whereas for a large wavelength separation, a value of = 8γ/9 = 9.4 W–1/km was found. This value corresponds to an average of the Kerr non-linearity over the Poincaré sphere, since the polarization of both the pump and signal waves become uncorrelated in the last case. A theoretical model is proposed to describe the variation of the effective non-linear parameter with the wavelength separation between pump and signal waves, which is in good agreement with the experimental data.

We investigate numerically, both in time and frequency domains, the influence of some higher-order effects, namely the third-order dispersion, intrapulse Raman scattering, and self-steepening, on the dynamics of different pulsating and chaotic solitons in dissipative systems, which are described by a generalized complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We show that the higher-order effects can have a dramatic impact on the dynamics of such pulses and that, for some ranges of the parameter values, they can be transformed into fixed-shape solitons. This paper is dedicated to Prof. Helmut Brand on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

It is known that one of the impacts of combined higher-order effects, namely the intrapulse Raman scattering, third-order dispersion, and self-steepening, on the plain-pulsating, erupting, and creeping soliton solutions of the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation is the change of its periodic behavior and its transformation into fixed-shape solutions. In this work, we numerically find the regions in the parameters space in which these solutions exist. We also characterize their velocities, shapes, and chirp.

A layered spiral microstructured optical fiber (LS-MOF) is presented, which offers the possibility of a good control of both the dispersion and the nonlinear properties. The proposed design is analyzed using a finite element method considering silica and air as the materials. Zero dispersion, low confinement loss, and a record value of γ = 70.0 W−1/km for the LS-MOF nonlinear parameter are simultaneously obtained at 1.55 μm, whereas a higher value γ = 169.4 W−1/km can be achieved at 1.06 μm. Our results demonstrate the great potential of the LS-MOF for several nonlinear applications, namely for an efficient generation of the supercontinuum.

The impact of some higher-order effects (HOEs), namely, intrapulse Raman scattering, self-steepening, and third-order dispersion, on a chaotic pulsating soliton, solution of the quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, is numerically investigated. We show that a proper combination of the three HOEs can control the pulse chaotic behavior and provide a fixed-shape solution. The region of existence of fixed-shape pulses is also presented for some range of the parameter values.

The polarization-dependent gain process in Raman amplification based all-optical polarization control is investigated. We map the output signal degree of polarization and polarization-dependent in order to assess the signal pulling process over the entire Raman gain bandwidth. We show that, in the undepleted regime, the signal pulling process is more efficient for higher pump powers, whereas for the depleted regime exists an optimum pump power for both signal pulling and polarization-dependent gain.

We investigate numerically the temporal and spectral characteristics of fixed-shape pulses, resulting from pulsating, erupting and creeping soliton solutions of a generalized complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE), which includes the third-order dispersion, intrapulse Raman scattering, and self-steepening effects. In general, the resulting fixed-shape solutions are asymmetric and chirped pulses. The interaction between such fixed-shape pulses is also investigated, and we show that a stable propagation is achieved, except when the pulses have an oscillating tail.© (2012) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). The supercontinum generation has been achieved mainly by two different approaches, namely, with femtosecond intense pulses or using a continuous wave laser or larger pulses centered on the anomalous dispersion region. In order to improve temporal coherence, it has been suggested the introduction of a pulse seed or the propagation of both a large pulse pump and a small weaker continuous wave to control the soliton fission. Here we propose supercontinuum generation using a hybrid input, we pump with a continuous laser and copropagate a picosecond signal. We compare the bandwidth of the supercontinuum using only the continuous pump or the hybrid setup. Simulations of the generalized Schrodinger equation, using an adequate input-noise model to reproduce the spectrum of the continuous signal, are performed in order to investigate the supercontinuum generation in the optical communication window under different dispersion regimes.
