Internet of things (IoT) is realized by the idea of free flow of information amongst various low-power embedded devices that use the Internet to communicate with one another. It is predicted that the IoT will be widely deployed and will find applicability in various domains of life. Demands of IoT have lately attracted huge attention, and organizations are excited about the business value of the data that will be generated by deploying such networks. On the contrary, IoT has various security and privacy concerns for the end users that limit its proliferation. In this paper, we have identified, categorized, and discussed various security challenges and state-of-the-art efforts to resolve these challenges.

The recent development of Big Data Analytics (BDA) and the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies create a huge opportunity for both disaster management systems and disaster-related authorities (emergency responders, police, public health, and fire departments) to acquire state-of-the-art assistance and improved insights for accurate and timely decision-making. The motivation behind this research is to pave the way for effective utilization of the available opportunities that the BDA and IoT collaboratively offer to predict, understand and monitor disaster situations. Most of the conventional disaster management systems lack the support for multiple new data sources and real-time big data processing tools that can assist decision makers with quick and accurate results. This paper highlights the importance of BDA and IoT for disaster management and investigates recent studies directed towards the same. We classify a thematic taxonomy with several related attributes and inspect the prevalent solutions to propose a conceptual reference model for the deployment of BDA-and IoT-based disaster management environments. The reference model with its proposed integrated parameters can provide guidelines to harvest, transmit, manage, and analyze disaster data from various data sources to deliver updated and valuable information for disaster management. We also enumerate some important use cases from a disaster management perspective. Lastly, we highlight the main research challenges that need to be addressed in such an important field of research.

Disasters (natural or man-made) can be lethal to human life, the environment, and infrastructure. The recent advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT) and the evolution in big data analytics (BDA) technologies have provided an open opportunity to develop highly needed disaster resilient smart city environments. In this paper, we propose and discuss the novel reference architecture and philosophy of a disaster resilient smart city (DRSC) through the integration of the IoT and BDA technologies. The proposed architecture offers a generic solution for disaster management activities in smart city incentives. A combination of the Hadoop Ecosystem and Spark are reviewed to develop an efficient DRSC environment that supports both real-time and offline analysis. The implementation model of the environment consists of data harvesting, data aggregation, data pre-processing, and big data analytics and service platform. A variety of datasets (i.e., smart buildings, city pollution, traffic simulator, and twitter) are utilized for the validation and evaluation of the system to detect and generate alerts for a fire in a building, pollution level in the city, emergency evacuation path, and the collection of information about natural disasters (i.e., earthquakes and tsunamis). The evaluation of the system efficiency is measured in terms of processing time and throughput that demonstrates the performance superiority of the proposed architecture. Moreover, the key challenges faced are identified and briefly discussed.

Big Data Analytics (BDA) has garnered significant attention in both academia and industries, particularly in sectors such as healthcare, owing to the exponential growth of data and advancements in technology. The integration of data from diverse sources and the utilization of advanced analytical techniques has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by improving diagnostic accuracy, enabling personalized medicine, and enhancing patient outcomes. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive literature review on the application of big data analytics in healthcare, focusing on its ecosystem, applications, and data sources. To achieve this, an extensive analysis of scientific studies published between 2013 and 2023 was conducted and overall 180 scientific studies were thoroughly evaluated, establishing a strong foundation for future research and identifying collaboration opportunities in the healthcare domain. The study delves into various application areas of BDA in healthcare, highlights successful implementations, and explores their potential to enhance healthcare outcomes while reducing costs. Additionally, it outlines the challenges and limitations associated with BDA in healthcare, discusses modelling tools and techniques, showcases deployed solutions, and presents the advantages of BDA through various real-world use cases. Furthermore, this study identifies and discusses key open research challenges in the field of big data analytics in healthcare, aiming to push the boundaries and contribute to enhanced healthcare outcomes and decision-making processes.

Internet of Things (IoT) is characterized as one of the leading actors for the next evolutionary stage in the computing world. IoT-based applications have already produced a plethora of novel services and are improving the living standard by enabling innovative and smart solutions. However, along with its rapid adoption, IoT technology also creates complex challenges regarding the management of IoT networks due to its resource limitations (computational power, energy, and security). Hence, it is urgently needed to refine the IoT-based application’s architectures to robustly manage the overall IoT infrastructure. Software-defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a paradigm that offers software-based controllers to manage hardware infrastructure and traffic flow on a network effectively. SDN architecture has the potential to provide efficient and reliable IoT network management. This research provides a comprehensive survey investigating the published studies on SDN-based frameworks to address IoT management issues in the dimensions of fault tolerance, energy management, scalability, load balancing, and security service provisioning within the IoT networks. We conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the research studies (published from 2010 to 2022) focusing on SDN-based IoT management frameworks. We provide an extensive discussion on various aspects of SDN-based IoT solutions and architectures. We elaborate a taxonomy of the existing SDN-based IoT frameworks and solutions by classifying them into categories such as network function virtualization, middleware, OpenFlow adaptation, and blockchain-based management. We present the research gaps by identifying and analyzing the key architectural requirements and management issues in IoT infrastructures. Finally, we highlight various challenges and a range of promising opportunities for future research to provide a roadmap for addressing the weaknesses and identifying the benefits from the potentials offered by SDN-based IoT solutions.

As the usability of Internet of Things (IoT) devices increases, the security threats and vulnerabilities associated with these resource-constrained IoT devices also rise. One of the major threats to IoT devices is Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). To make the security of IoT devices effective and resilient, continuous monitoring and early detection, along with adaptive decision making, are required. These challenges can be addressed with software-defined networking (SDN), which provides an opportunity for effectively managing the DDoS threats faced by IoT devices. This research proposes a novel SDN-based secure IoT framework that can detect the vulnerabilities in IoT devices or malicious traffic generated by IoT devices using the session IP counter and IP Payload analysis. The framework’s DDoS attack detection module consisting of the proposed algorithms can easily detect the DDoS attack in the SD-IoT network by analyzing different parameters even with a large traffic volume. These techniques are implemented on an SDN controller and tested by generating a large volume of traffic from a compromised node, which is then detected and notified. According to the results and comparative analysis, the proposed framework detects DDoS attacks in the early stage with high accuracy and detection rate from 98% to 100%, having a low false-positive rate.
