The South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China is the world’s largest water transfer project, aiming to address water shortages in northern China by channeling water from the water-rich southern regions. Water resources in Tianjin have long been in severe deficit, with excessive groundwater extraction causing significant surface subsidence, negatively impacting urban infrastructure and economic development. As a result, Tianjin has become a key beneficiary of this water diversion project. To investigate the current situation of surface subsidence, we obtained the vertical displacement time series from 21 GNSS stations across Tianjin from 2011 to 2021 and analyzed overall subsidence changes and rehabilitation status. Results indicate that no clear surface subsidence was observed in the northern regions of Tianjin due to groundwater extraction mainly in unconfined aquifers. The southwestern region experienced the most significant surface subsidence due to overexploitation of deep groundwater, with peak cumulative subsidence exceeding 600 mm during the study period. The central, eastern, and southeastern coastal regions also faced severe surface subsidence with cumulative amounts ranging from 100 mm to 400 mm. The alleviation of subsidence predominantly benefits from continuous water supply from the South to North Water Diversion Project, which resulted in most stations significantly slowing down or even stabilizing their settlement rates after 2018. Therefore, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project plays a crucial role in addressing the persistent water resource shortage and mitigating long-term surface subsidence in Tianjin by ensuring a continuous water supply and significantly reducing the need for groundwater extraction. Our findings indicate positive measures, such as water diversion projects and water management policies, can serve as valuable references for other regions around the world facing similar water scarcity and groundwater overexploitation.

A global gravity field model (GGM) is essential to be validated with ground-based or airborne observational data for the accurate application of the GGM at a regional scale. Furthermore, accurately understanding the commission errors between the GGM and observational data are crucial for improving regional gravity fields. Taking the North China region as an example, to circumvent the omission errors, it is necessary to unify the spatial resolutions of the EIGEN-6C4 model and terrestrial gravity observational data to 110 km (determined by the distribution of gravity stations) by employing the spherical harmonic function for the EIGEN-6C4 model and the Slepian basis function for the gravity data, respectively. However, the application of spherical harmonic function expansions in the gravity model results in the Gibbs phenomenon, which may be a primary factor contributing to commission errors and impedes the accurate validation of the EIGEN-6C4 model with terrestrial gravity data. To effectively mitigate this issue, this study proposes a combination approach of window function filtering and regional eigenvalue constraint (based on the Slepian basis). Utilizing the EIGEN-6C4 gravity model to derive the gravity disturbance field at a resolution of 110 km (with spherical harmonic expansion up to the 180th degree and order), the combination approach effectively suppresses over 90% of high-degree (above the 120th degree) Gibbs phenomena. This approach also reduces signal leakage outside the region, thus enhancing the spatial accuracy of the regional gravity disturbance field. A subsequent comparison of the regional gravity disturbance field derived from the true model and terrestrial gravity data in North China indicates excellent consistency, with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.80 mGal. This validation confirms that the combined approach of window function filtering and regional eigenvalue constraints effectively mitigates the Gibbs phenomenon and yields precise regional gravity fields. This approach is anticipated to significantly benefit scientific applications such as improving the accuracy of regional elevation benchmarks and accurately inverting the Earth’s internal structure.

Marine gravity anomalies play an important role in geophysics applications. To observe high-precision and high-resolution gravity anomalies, a high-performance marine gravimeter is key. At present, the marine gravimeters widely used in the world have different measurement principles, such as the two-axis stable platform gravimeter, gimbaled inertial navigation gravimeter, and strapdown gravimeter. However, the performances of marine gravimeters with different measurement principles show different precision levels in real applications. A synchronized comparison test on the same platform is the most direct method for evaluating their performance, which is a relative analysis method. To absolutely evaluate the performance of different kinds of marine gravimeters, a new method is presented to remove the residual noise from the measured free air gravity anomaly to establish an “air truth” free air gravity anomaly. Synchronous measurements with different gravimeters were carried out in the north area of the South China Sea, measured three times over a round trip, and the highest-precision free air gravity anomaly measured by GT-2M, SAG-2M, and ZL11-1A was chosen to establish the “air truth” free air gravity anomaly. The external consistency of the free air gravity anomaly upon the removal of residual noise of frequencies 0.03 Hz to 0.06 Hz improved, and the three separate standard free air gravity anomalies of each gravimeter were the same with no deviation. The weighted result of the three average values of GT-2M, SAG-2M, and ZL11-1A is the established “air truth” free air gravity anomaly, which can be used as a standard to estimate the performance of marine gravimeters with different kinds of principles.

Euler deconvolution is widely used to estimate the three-dimensional locations of geological sources from magnetic anomaly data. However, traditional Euler deconvolution is commonly performed on planar gridded data, whereas magnetic surveys in mountainous and hilly areas are often acquired over undulating terrain. Reducing such data to a horizontal plane before derivative calculation can introduce transformation errors, and derivative calculation by the conventional FFT-based (wavenumber-domain) method becomes less suitable under variable topographic conditions. To address these limitations, this study proposes an equivalent source method based on correlation imaging for calculating the spatial derivatives required by Euler deconvolution directly from magnetic anomaly data acquired over undulating terrain. An improved Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm is further introduced to suppress spurious Euler solutions and retain valid source location estimates. Synthetic model experiments show that the proposed equivalent source method yields more accurate derivatives than the conventional FFT-based method under undulating terrain conditions. The improved DBSCAN algorithm effectively removes spurious solutions while preserving clustered solutions associated with geological sources. The proposed workflow was further applied to magnetic data from a coal fire zone in Shenmu, Shaanxi Province, China, to estimate the 3D locations of underground magnetic sources related to underground coal fires. The interpreted source locations are consistent with surface validation evidence, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method for magnetic anomaly interpretation in complex topographic settings.
