High-Q metasurfaces have important applications in high-sensitivity sensing, low-threshold lasers, and nonlinear optics due to the strong local electromagnetic field enhancements. Although ultra-high-Q resonances of bound states in the continuum (BIC) metasurfaces have been rapidly developed in the optical regime, it is still a challenging task in the terahertz band for long years because of absorption loss of dielectric materials, design, and fabrication of nanostructures, and the need for high-signal-to-noise ratio and high-resolution spectral measurements. Here, a polarization-insensitive quasi-BIC resonance with a high-Q factor of 1049 in a terahertz all-silicon metasurface is experimentally achieved, exceeding the current highest record by 3 times of magnitude. And by using this ultra-high-Q metasurface, a terahertz intensity modulation with very low optical pump power is demonstrated. The proposed all-silicon metasurface can pave the way for the research and development of high-Q terahertz metasurfaces.

We report in this paper terahertz gas sensing using a simple 1D photonic crystal cavity. The resonant frequencies of the cavity depend linearly on the refractive index of the ambient gas, which can then be measured by monitoring the resonance shift. Although quite easy to manufacture, this cavity exhibits high-quality factors, facilitating the realization of high sensitivity in the gas refractive index sensing. In our experiment, 6% of the change of hydrogen concentration in air, which corresponds to a refractive index change of 1.4×10−5, can be steadily detected, and different gas samples can be easily identified. Our experimental results are consistent with the theoretically calculated spectral responses of the cavity using the transfer matrix method.

We presented and manufactured a triple-band terahertz (THz) metamaterial absorber with three concentric square ring metallic resonators, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) layer, and a metallic substrate. The simulation results demonstrate that the absorptivity of 99.5%, 86.4%, and 98.4% can be achieved at resonant frequency of 0.337, 0.496, and 0.718 THz, respectively. The experimental results show three distinct absorption peaks at 0.366, 0.512, and 0.751 THz, which is mostly agreement with the simulation. We analyzed the absorption mechanism from the distribution of electric and magnetic fields. The sensitivity of the three peaks of this triple-band absorber to the surrounding is 72, 103.5, 139.5 GHz/RIU, respectively. In addition, the absorber is polarization insensitive because of the symmetric configuration. The absorber can simultaneously exhibit high absorption effect at incident angles up to 60° for transverse electric (TE) polarization and 70° for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization. This presented terahertz metamaterial absorber with a triple-band absorption and easy fabrication can find important applications in biological sensing, THz imaging, filter and optical communication.

An analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an asymmetric E-shaped all-dielectric metasurface was proposed and numerically demonstrated in the near infrared spectral region. The E-shaped metasurface supports a strong toroidal dipolar resonance with high quality (Q) factor, which is verified by decomposed scattered powers for multipole moments using a Cartesian coordinate system. A high transmission EIT-like optical response was achieved, and clearly interpreted by the destructive interference between the dark toroidal dipolar moment and bright magnetic dipolar mode through the asymmetric metasurface. The bandwidth of the transparency window can be easily designed by changing the asymmetric parameter of the structure. The proposed E-shaped all-dielectric metasurface gives a new way to realize toroidal dipolar response and has potential applications in bio-chemical sensing, narrowband filters, optical modulations, and slow light based devices.

We proposed and demonstrated an ultra-high sensitive refractive index metamaterial sensor within terahertz region. The sensor consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) structure on the top, aluminum in the middle, and a polyimide as the bottom substrate. The simulation results show that such sensor has an absorption peak at 2.0 THz with the Q-factor up to 444. The sensor is very sensitive to the change of the refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium. The metamaterial sensor with optimized structure has a sensitivity of 1.762 THz/RIU and a figure of merit (FoM) value of 392 RIU −1 , respectively. Meanwhile, both the absorption peak position and intensity of such metamaterial sensor could be adjustable. The proposed terahertz metamaterial sensor with such high sensitivity and easily tunable properties has broad application prospects in research fields including biomedical sensing, disease diagnosis, and also trace detection of hazardous substances.

In metamaterial systems, toroidal dipole (TD) plays an important role in determining their optical properties. Here, we proposed an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of two silicon split-ring resonators (SRRs) that can support strong TD resonance. The TD resonance is excited by TD moments both inside the unit cell and between the neighboring unit cells, and can be easily manipulated by altering the gap size or distance of the SRRs, leading to powerful electric and magnetic near-field enhancement. In addition, symmetric unprotected TD bound state in the continuum (TD-BIC) was achieved in closed-ring-resonator (CRR) metasurface, and transformed into leaky resonances with ultrahigh Q factors by adjusting the distance of CRRs. The proposed structure provides a good platform for us to better understand the coupling of SRRs, which is useful for the design and application of TD metasurfaces in biological sensors, nonlinear interactions and other photonic devices.
