The transport industry in the modern period faces the challenges of digitalization, infrastructure modernization, and intensification of the use of existing lines. To carry out the transportation process, the railways of Russia are equipped with various technical devices and means, which include various devices of railway automation. Simultaneously with the development of new control systems, the introduction of new technologies of operational work is taking place. The paper considers the feasibility and efficiency of using mobile block sections and virtual couplings in conditions of limited capacity of railway directions, allowing to optimize the interval regulation of train traffic, reduce train intervals, reduce power consumption for traction, as well as infrastructure maintenance costs. The economic and technological aspects of the implementation of these innovations are revealed.

The aim of the paper is to select a suitable comparative methodology for assessing the impact of modernization of a specific line section, which is part of the EU international railway corridor, based on the knowledge of methodologies for determining the capacity of railway infrastructure. Some construction measures may have a negative impact on the timetable stability in the future, as well as on the ability to accept new traffic flows from other modes of transport in line with EU transport policy. Subsequently, it is necessary to propose measures for optimal capacity utilization. The section Žilina - Vrútky in Slovakia, which is part of the 5th International Corridor of the TEN-T network, was selected for the case study.

This paper deals with railway lines with low traffic intensity where trains are operated under simplified conditions. Those conditions are stated in a regulation, and there is no interlocking system on the line. The whole railway operation is organized according to a regulation in cooperation with the train crew. For the calculation of the throughput, we can use analytic or simulation methods. On those lines there is a big problem with the common working methods because of special circumstances on each line, which are influencing the technological times and reliability of the calculation. The simplified conditions are the transforming of regular interlocking systems on the administrative level. Therefore, it is very complicated to use a common simulation model. Most of the simulation tools are not able to work with it. The motivation of this paper is to prove that modern simulation tools are usable for that specific condition as well. The simulation model was built in SW OpenTrack which is able to modify its functions to figure out each technological action to ensure the correct function of the model. This functionality is described in the paper in general and implemented on a case study.

Planning the range of transport services in the selected geographical area is particularly relevant in the context of developing integrated transport systems. The aim is to build a sustainable public passenger transport system as an alternative to individual transport. Realizing quality and efficient transport services is a comprehensive process, though there are currently no applicable principles of its proposal and creation in terms of creating the appropriate range of railway infrastructure. The paper presents the general research results focused on solving the problems of transport services in the regional passenger railway transport. The gravity model allows the study of the dependence between the population in the adjacent area, the availability of stops and the length of the transport line. A part of the research is to adjust the inputs of this model to more accurately determine the range of railway infrastructure. Based on the research of the palette of railway lines, the necessary capacity of infrastructure in terms of ensuring the required number of trains in peak hours is adjusted. The output is a proposal of the session to the calculation of transport potential and subsequently its practical application. Finally, based on its resulting values, it is possible to adjust the transport concept to set up a more efficient and higher quality timetable.

The railway sector in the European Union is changing. The goal of EU transport policy is to liberalize the market for rail transport services, dismantle national transport monopolies, and open competitive public tenders to other train operators. For the optimal utilization of the railway infrastructure capacity, it is necessary to calculate it properly in terms of open access to the infrastructure. At present, many important corridors are at full capacity. Therefore, in order to increase the number of freight trains, it is necessary to implement certain measures to increase the track line capacity. Infrastructure capacity research is part of the complexity of the capacity management processes. A progressive approach to define it means to describe the estimating process of railway infrastructure capacity including progressive capacity allocation approaches as a key part of capacity management. The aim is to define the processes of the infrastructure capacity management on which depends the quality level of operational traffic management as well the efficiency of the traffic flow on the infrastructure. The partial objective is to investigate the impact of systematic train paths in periodic timetables on rail infrastructure capacity. The proposals fully respect the EU transport policy.

Planning the extent of transport services within a selected territory is a topical issue especially in the context of developing integrated transport systems. The objective of this research study is to design a sustainable system of public passenger transport that would be an alternative to expanding individual transport. The implementation of a quality and efficient transport service is a relatively complex process, since, currently, there are no generally applicable principles for its design. This manuscript presents general results of research aimed at solving the problem of transport service within a selected territory issue with a focus on rail transport as an efficient transport system representing a backbone of a transport system. The subject of the investigation is to compile a set of factors affecting the design of the transport concept. The output of the manuscript consists in a proposal of a generally applicable procedure including a calculation of transport potential and characteristics of the inputs. Subsequently, based on the resulting values, it will be possible to determine the extent of the transport services provided by rail transport in any territory, which will contribute to a more efficient and high quality theoretical graph of train running.

The development of the transport sector is a long-term and continual process. This leads to a gradual increase in economic performance, economic growth and a deeper integration of the EU countries into the global economic structures. This contribution is focused on the problem of usage of the east – west corridors for the freight transport in transit. There are proposed for the new transport connections between China and Europe. The aim of the new connections is speed up of transport process of good flows. When proposing new corridor routes and new options for interconnection of the European rail network, basic deterministic methods of network analysis - the critical path method of the CPM and the CCM critical chain can be used. The aim is also to offer new options for development of rail transportation.

At present, mobility is an important part of everyday activities in cities. The increasing number of passenger and freight vehicles on the widening transport infrastructure raises several problems. The range of use of public passenger transport does satisfy enough the citizens needs and its use is constantly decreasing, especially in the new EU countries. One of the reasons is also the growing sale and production of new passenger cars in the EU, resulting in congestion in the road infrastructure of cities. These issues are dealt with the modern City Logistics concept. The paper is aimed to the basic principles of city logistics, the reasons for its development and, in particular, the possibilities of practical use. An example is the city of Trenčín in Slovakia, where a regional rail passenger transport is proposed for city traffic service including Park and Ride system.

An effective functioning of logistic chains through the use of intermodal transport inevitably necessitates elimination of potential constraints, which have a negative impact on the logistic chains implementation. The objective of the contribution is the analysis, definition as well as classification of constraints related to the logistic chains in the intermodal transport, which should enable to compare levels of constraints in different alternatives of the logistic chain implementation. Based on the comparison of the restriction levels, it is possible to select a more convenient way of the logistic chain implementation. The defined relevant constraints are assessed using scientific methods. These identified constraints have formed the basis for establishing a methodology, which enables to determine weights of constraints as well as to compare their levels on the basis of specific needs of entities.

Paper deals with the problematic about the information quality impact and the basic methods which can optimize the costs of low quality of using information. First of all, it is important to purify the input data from the inconsistencies and measure the quality of data. This process assures to minimize the reasons that are responsible of poor quality of processes. Targets area of this paper is to identify and minimize the main reasons of delaying the passenger train by comparing years 2012 and 2013. Target groups of passenger trains were divided in three parts responsibilities of delaying – type of train, code of delay, group responsible for the train delay.

Nowadays, great emphasis is placed on the quality of services provided in rail passenger transport, which is influenced by several factors. The competition between operators in the public tender when ordering paths in long-distance rail passenger transport is very significant. The aim of this article is to analyse steps of the Slovak government in the announcement of the first public tenders to provide subsidized transport of a selected line and to determine conditions for this tender. During 2015, Slovak Ministry of Transport began to take steps towards the liberalisation of the long-distance domestic rail passenger service on the Bratislava to Banská Bystrica line, which opened up the market for domestic passenger services to a new railway company. The Bratislava to Banská Bystrica line was chosen because of the provision of sufficient transport performance and passenger flows. The liberalisation process of the Bratislava to Banská Bystrica line is still ongoing, and has entered competitive conditions and criteria stage, although the tender had yet to be concluded in 2015.

A variety of methodologies are being used across Europe for the estimation of railway infrastructure capacity. This paper introduces the basic principles of the methodologies used – analytical methodology (e.g. Slovak railways), UIC methodology, and the graphically developed methodology of the Department of Railway Transport, University of Žilina (KŽD). On the basis of these new approaches, the occupation time estimation is researched. This new method is based on a graphic approach that uses operational time intervals as part of occupation time in accordance with the Slovak methodology. The new methodology concerns graphic capacity estimation and is a conceptual framework developed by the authors for easier evaluation of occupation time in train traffic diagrams.
