Novel aluminium matrix composites reinforced by MoTaNbVW refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA) particulates have been fabricated by powder metallurgy. The microstructure of the produced composites has been studied and the corrosion behaviour assessed in 3.5% NaCl solution. The composites exhibited low porosity, good homogeneity, few defects, and good distribution of the reinforcing phase in the Al matrix. No secondary intermetallic phases have been formed while the interface between matrix/reinforcement showed good bonding with no signs of reactivity. Increasing the volume of the reinforcing phase leads to increased hardness values. Al-HEA composites exhibited susceptibility to localised forms of corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solution. The microstructure has been analysed and corrosion mechanisms have been formulated.

Hypereutectic Al-Co alloys of various Co contents (7–20 weight % (wt.%) Co) were prepared by vacuum arc melting, aiming at investigating the influence of the cobalt content on the microstructure and corrosion behavior. Quite uniform and directional microstructures were attained. The obtained microstructures depended on the Co content, ranging from fully eutectic growth (7 wt.% and 10 wt.% Co) to coarse primary Al9Co2 predominance (20 wt.% Co). Co dissolution in Al far exceeded the negligible equilibrium solubility of Co in Al; however, it was hardly uniform. By increasing the cobalt content, the fraction and coarseness of Al9Co2, the content of Co dissolved in the Al matrix, and the hardness and porosity of the alloy increased. All alloys exhibited similar corrosion behavior in 3.5 wt.% NaCl with high resistance to localized corrosion. Al-7 wt.% Co showed slightly superior corrosion resistance than the other compositions in terms of relatively low corrosion rate, relatively low passivation current density and scarcity of stress corrosion cracking indications. All Al-Co compositions demonstrated substantially higher resistance to localized corrosion than commercially pure Al produced by casting, cold rolling and arc melting. A corrosion mechanism was formulated. Surface films were identified.

Novel aluminium matrix composites have been fabricated using a powder metallurgy route with reinforcement phase particles of high entropy alloy (HEA) consisting of third transition metals. These new composites are studied as far as their microstructure (SEM, XRD), basic mechanical properties (hardness, elastic modulus) and creep response using nanoindentation techniques are concerned. Wear (sliding wear tests) and corrosion behaviour (in 3.5 wt.% NaCl environment) were also assessed. It was observed that, microstructurally, no secondary intermetallic phases were formed. Hardness and wear resistance seemed to increase with the increase in HEA particles, and in terms of corrosion, the composites exhibited susceptibility to localised forms. Nanoindentation techniques and creep response showed findings that are connected with the deformation nature of both the Al matrix and the HEA reinforcing phase.

The classic Cantor (FeCoCrMnNi) isoatomic high entropy alloy was modified by separate additions of Mo and Nb in an effort to optimize its mechanical properties and sliding wear response. It was found that the introduction of Mo and Nb modified the single phase FCC solid solution structure of the original alloy and led to the formation of new phases such as the BCC solid solution, σ-phase, and Laves, along with the possible existence of intermetallic phases. The overall phase formation sequence was approached by parametric model assessment and solidification considerations. Nanoindentation-based mechanical property evaluation showed that due to the introduction of Mo and Nb; the modulus of elasticity and microhardness were increased. Creep nanoindentation assessment revealed the beneficial action of Mo and Nb in increasing the creep resistance based on the stress sensitivity exponent, strain rate sensitivity, and critical volume for the dislocation nucleation considerations. The power law and power law breakdown were identified as the main creep deformation mechanisms. Finally, the sliding wear response was increased by the addition of Mo and Nb with this behavior obeying Archard’s law. A correlation between microstructure, wear track morphologies, and debris characteristics was also attempted.

Al–Co alloys of various Co contents (2–20 wt.% Co) were fabricated by vacuum arc melting (VAM) with the scope to investigate the influence of cobalt on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Al in 1 M H2SO4. The obtained microstructures were directional, consisting of Al9Co2 platelets (grown to coarse acicular plates as the Co content increased) uniformly dispersed in an Al-matrix. Alloying Al with Co did not decrease the rate of uniform corrosion of Al but it considerably increased its passivation ability. Moreover, all Al–Co alloys displayed lower uniform corrosion rate and notably higher passivation ability than market leading Al-alloys. The underlying mechanisms during anodic polarization in 1 M H2SO4 were identified and correlated with the microstructure. High Co content alloys (7–20 wt.% Co) presented superior passivation ability in 1 M H2SO4 as compared to the low Co content alloys.
