Paulo Mazzafera graduated from the School of Agriculture Luiz de Queiroz (University of São Paulo) in 1982. He has obtained his MSc and PhD at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), where he is currently a Full Professor. His training is in plant physiology. He specialized in coffee physiology and genetics at the Agronomic Institute at Campinas and undertook two post-doctorates (Swedish Univ. Agric. Sciences, Sweden and CSIRO, Australia). He is a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences of São Paulo State, and the World Academy of Science. He served as a Member of the CNPq Botany Committee and a Member of Coord. Agronomy and Veterinary of FAPESP. He was Head of the Department at Unicamp twice, Director of the Institute of Biology/Unicamp, Assistant to the Dean of Research, and Advisor to the Dean of Unicamp. He was also Director of the National Laboratory of Science and Technology of Bioethanol (CTBE) (currently Lab. BioRenewables of CNPEM). He was awarded the Academic Recognition Award "Zeferino Vaz" by Unicamp, for his outstanding scientific production, and the ABIC Technology Award, from the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (ABIC). From 2017–2022 he was a Visiting Professor at ESALQ-USP. He is among the 2% most influential scientists in the world. His lines of research are related to crop physiology, lignin metabolism in sugar cane and eucalyptus, and biostimulants as inducers of productivity and stress tolerance.
