Despite abundant evidence linking dyslipidaemia to an increased risk of hyperuricaemia, the exact association between each component of dyslipidaemia and hyperuricaemia remains controversial. Thus,...

Background: This study was conducted to compare the validity and discriminative power of both the EQ-5D-3 L and EQ-5D-5 L in an elderly Chinese population with multiple chronic and acute conditions. Methods: A total of 648 retired people from China (mean ± standard deviation: 73.3 ± 6.4 years; male: 55.7%) were recruited and randomized to complete the 3 L or 5 L questionnaire. The 3 L and 5 L were compared in terms of distribution properties, ceiling effects, informativity, validity and discriminatory performance. Convergent validity between the 3 L and 5 L was tested by spearman’s rank-order correlation. Discriminatory power was conducted by relative efficiency as assessed by the F statistics. Results: Most participants answered to “no problems” on both versions of EQ-5D. The 5 L trended towards a slightly lower ceiling compared with the 3 L. The Shannon index improved with the 5 L while the Shannon’s Evenness index tended to be similar. Convergent validity was confirmed by the moderate to strong correlation for both 3 L and 5 L. Relative efficiency suggested that 5 L had a higher absolute discriminatory power than the 3 L version in terms of the presence conditions, especially for osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Both the 3 L and 5 L are demonstrated to be valid based HRQoL instruments in Chinese elderly population. The 5 L system may be preferable to the 3 L, as it demonstrated superior performance with respect to lower ceiling effect and better discriminatory power. Further research is needed to examine the responsiveness of the two EQ-5D instruments in this population.

It remains unclear whether leukocyte-related parameters could be used as biomarkers to differentiate metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO) from metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO). We aimed to examine the differences in the distribution of leukocyte-related parameters between older adults with MHO and MUO and the correlations of leukocyte-related parameters with individual components of metabolic abnormality. In the Weitang Geriatric Diseases Study on older Chinese adults aged 60 years or above, 404 individuals with MHO and 480 with MUO contributed to the analysis. Overweight/obesity was defined as body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or more. MHO and MUO were discriminated based on the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Leukocyte-related parameters were assessed using an automated hematology analyzer. All leukocyte-related parameters except monocytes were elevated in MUO group compared with MHO group (all P < 0.05). The prevalence of MUO increased by 24% with each 109/L increase of leukocytes after adjusting for confounders in the multiple-adjusted model (P < 0.01) and each unit elevation of other parameters except lymphocytes and monocytes were significantly associated with the presence of MUO (all P < 0.01). Trend tests revealed a linear trend for the association between MUO and all the leukocyte-related parameters (all P for trend < 0.05). Significant interactions between leukocyte-related parameters and sex on the presence of MUO were observed (all P value for interaction < 0.05). Higher leukocyte-related parameters were found in patients with MUO than those with MHO and were associated with higher prevalence of MUO which seems to be sex-dependent. Further studies are needed to see whether these parameters could be used as biomarkers for the screening or diagnosis for MUO in clinical or public health practice.

Aim. To investigate the association between variables related to tea consumption (duration, frequency, and type) and the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Methods. A rural community-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted in Weitang Town, Suzhou, China. People aged 60 years or above were invited to complete the survey. All eligible patients underwent detailed eye examination. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) was diagnosed and graded based on the retinal fundus imaging. Diabetes was defined as fasting glucose concentrations of ≥7.0 mmol/L or self-reported diagnosis of diabetes. Information about tea consumption such as duration, type, and frequency, together with demographics and lifestyle characteristics, were collected using a face-to-face questionnaire interview. The association between tea consumption and the risk of DR was determined by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results. Among the 5,281 participants, 614 had diabetes mellitus (prevalence of 11.63%). The prevalence rate of DR was 10.38% in the diabetic population and 1.04% in the general population. Compared with non-tea consumers, the crude OR values for DR in subjects with long-term and short-term tea consumption were 0.34 (95%CI=0.14‐0.82, p=0.016) and 1.64 (95%CI=0.74‐3.64, p=0.221), respectively. When adjusted for age, gender, and other confounders, consumption of tea for ≥20 years was associated with reduced odds of DR (OR=0.29, 95%CI=0.09‐0.97, p=0.044). Thus, long-term tea consumption was significantly associated with a lower risk of DR. There was no statistical significance between frequency or type of tea consumption with DR (p>0.05). Conclusion. Elderly diabetic Chinese residents who consumed tea for more than twenty years had a lower risk of DR compared to non-tea consumers. The long-term tea consumption may be an independent protective factor for DR. However, further studies are warranted to examine the association.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between creatine kinase (CK) and major bleeding in non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) patients during hospitalization, and to analyze the predictive value of CK for major bleeding in NSTE-ACS patients during treatment. Methods: A total of 1469 NSTE-ACS patients admitted to our hospital from January 2017 to December 2019 were collected, including 1024 unstable angina pectoris patients and 445 non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients. Plasma CK and hemoglobin concentrations were measured after admission. The patients were divided into major bleeding group (n=31) and non-major bleeding group (n=1438) according to Thrombolysis In Myocardial Ischemia bleeding classification standard, and they were given routine treatment. Results: During the treatment period, major bleeding occurred in 31 of 1469 NSTE-ACS patients, accounting for 2.11%. CK value in major bleeding group was higher than that in non-major bleeding group (P<0.001). According to the quartile, CK was divided into groups Q1-Q4, and the incidence of major bleeding in group Q4 was higher than that of the other three groups (P<0.001). Plasma CK was positively correlated with major bleeding in NSTE-ACS patients (r=0.59, P<0.001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under the curve of baseline CK value was 0.793 (SE=0.062, P=0.001, 95%CI 0.711-0.872) in NSTE-ACS patients during treatment. Conclusion: CK was associated with major bleeding in NSTE-ACS patients.
