Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine the interplay between family commitment as a family-centric resource and professionalization of the organization as a firm-centric resource to determine how the two phenomenon come together to enhance business performance in the context of privately held family firms.Design/methodology/approach: Deploying the theoretical lens offered by the resource-based view, a conceptual link is developed between family commitment to the firm and firm performance with the potential moderating influence of firm professionalization. The hypotheses are tested using data collected from 357 privately held medium-to-large family-owned manufacturing companies in Bangladesh. The data are analyzed through structural equation modeling using SmartPLS (v.3.2).Findings: The data analysis suggests that in absence of the moderator; professionalization, family commitment has a positive and significant association with firm performance. While in the presence of the moderator the above relationship is substantially stronger. The findings indicate that when family-specific resources and firm-specific resources are synchronized, it enhances performance of the family firm and puts it on a strong economic footing toward a more sustainable future.Research limitations/implications: Cross-sectional nature of the study exposes it to the specter of common method bias despite the fact that procedural remedies were initiated to minimize the impact of such occurrence. Furthermore, data were collected from a single individual in each organization. Therefore, a longitudinal study with data obtained from multiple individuals at different levels of the organization would possibly yield more robust findings.Practical implications: Leaders of family firms may find pertinent clues from the outcome of this study. Particularly, the confluence of family commitment to the firm as a family-specific resource and professionalization as a firm-specific resource can be valuable, rare, difficult to imitate and substitute source of competitive advantage for the family business organization.Social implications: Survival of family businesses is vital to the global economy as one of the primary drivers of global gross domestic product growth and source of new employment. Policymakers can benefit from the findings of this study to customize policies to nurture growth of family enterprises and incentivize family firms to adopt professionalization through better governance and transparent managerial procedures.Originality/value: A nuanced understanding of how family commitment and firm professionalization combine to significantly improve performance of family firms has not been dominant in the literature. Therefore, findings of this study carry special theoretical implications, because it suggests that both family-specific features and firm-specific features are necessary for enhanced levels of firm-centric business outcomes such as economic performance.

This study is centered around a set of research questions that aim to explain how sustainability balanced scorecard architectures with sustainability parameters either embedded or treated as a separate perspective relate to environmental investment decision-making. The research also examines the mediating role of sustainability balanced scorecard knowledge and moderating role of strategic risk information. This article presents the results and answers to the research questions via conducting an experimental study approach using a two-factor factorial design. This is possibly the first study that determines, through an experimental procedure conducted with managers working in large manufacturing companies, whether any significant difference exists in environmental investment decision outcomes when decision-makers are presented with either an architecture where sustainability is embedded with the traditional four perspectives of balanced scorecards versus when it is presented as a separate fifth perspective. Furthermore, the development of an integrated model is possibly a significant contribution to the extant literature.

Purpose: This study aims to fill a gap in the literature regarding the digitalization of accounting processes (DAP) and its impact on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) performance. Current research primarily focuses on large organizations, leaving SMEs comparatively understudied. It remains unclear if DAP directly influences SME performance or if the exploitation dimension of organizational ambidexterity mediates this relationship. This study investigates both the direct and mediated effects of DAP on SME business performance. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs the ambidexterity theory and the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework to present a conceptual framework that establishes a connection between DAP and SME performance, mediated by the influences of exploitation and exploration. To assess our hypotheses, we collected cross-sectional data from 254 SMEs in Oman. The analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling, implemented with Smart PLS. Findings: The findings suggest that DAP has a positive impact on both the exploitation and performance of SMEs. Additionally, exploitation not only directly affects performance but also partially mediates the relationship between DAP and performance. Research limitations/implications: Despite the significance of this study, numerous limitations must be recognized. The research is confined to SMEs in Oman, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Subsequent research may utilize this approach in many cultural and geographic settings, including developed economies, to investigate potential discrepancies in DAP impact. Secondly, although the study emphasizes exploitation as a mediator, additional organizational characteristics, including leadership style, digital culture and strategy alignment, may potentially affect the DAP performance link and warrant further examination. Thirdly, while quantitatively robust, the use of statistical data fails to adequately represent the varied perspectives of SME managers throughout the digitalization process. Practical implications: The framework examined in this study offers practical guidance for decision-makers and policymakers involved in SME development. It underscores the significance of digitalizing accounting processes, which empowers these enterprises to enhance operational efficiencies by leveraging their existing resources and capabilities, ultimately resulting in improved business performance. These insights can inform practitioners in crafting policies and strategies that aim to ensure the sustainability of SMEs. Originality/value: This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on digital transformation and its impact on organizational performance. It offers a distinctive perspective on the connection between DAP and SME performance. The uniqueness of this study lies in its presentation and testing of a framework that intersects two theories from separate domains: the TOE framework in technology adoption and the ambidexterity theory in strategic management. Moreover, the study examines the potential mediating role of exploitation in the relationship between DAP and SME performance.
