In recent years, there has been a strong activity in the so-called precision agriculture, particularly the monitoring aspect, not only to improve productivity, but also to meet demand of a growing population. At a large scale, precise monitoring of cultivated fields is a quite challenging task. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a survey on techniques, applied to precision agriculture monitoring, through the use of drones equipped with multispectral, thermal and visible cameras. For each application, the main limitations are highlighted and the parameters to be considered before to perform a flight are reported.

Unmanned aerial vehicles’ (UAVs) safety has gained great research interest due to the increase in the number of UAVs in circulation and their applications, which has inevitably also led to an increase in the number of accidents in which these vehicles are involved. The paper presents a classification of UAV safety solutions that can be found in the scientific literature, putting in evidence the fundamental and critical role of sensors and measurements in the field. Proposals from research on each proposed class concerning flight test procedures, in-flight solutions including soft propeller use, fault and damage detection, collision avoidance and safe landing, as well as ground solution including testing and injury and damage quantification measurements are discussed.

The application fields of modern Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), such as light Remotely Piloted Systems, are moving from military fields to a wide range of civilian applications. These platforms embed several sensors that enable the use of UAVs as remote measurement systems. This paper deals with a survey of measurement applications based on UAV. In the first part, several classifications of UAVs are reported. Then, the architectural overview of a quadrotor UAV and several examples of measurement systems embedded on drone for indoor and outdoor navigation are described. In the last part, a review of civilian applications using the drone as remote measurement system is presented and discussed.

Nowadays, Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm represents a technological challenge regarding the measurement applications which uses Internet for measurement data transmission and their management. This paper presents a comprehensive survey, where the IoT is (or, becoming) a desideratum for measurement applications. Attention is paid to intelligent transportation systems, smart and connected health, smart energy, environment, building, and factory.
