A tree skeleton reflects the geometric and structural characteristics of a tree. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) provides an effective means to construct tree skeletons that can capture the surface and topological features of trees. However, it is difficult to construct a tree skeleton located at the geometric centre of the tree with a detailed hierarchy of branches because of the natural intricate topology of the tree and the defects of the tree point cloud scanned by TLS. In this study, we presented a tree-skeletonization method based on density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) using TLS data. First, outliers were removed using DBSCAN, and the point-traversal order of each point was recorded. Next, a tree point cloud was divided into several tree slices using contour planes, and several tree segments were obtained by applying DBSCAN to each tree slice. Tree skeleton points were retrieved from each tree segment after the point-inversion transformation. Then, the adjacent relationship between skeleton points and the flow weight of each skeleton point was calculated based on the point-traversal order. After that, the skeleton points were classified into stems and different levels of branch points using the flow weights of the skeleton points, and the branch hierarchies were identified. Finally, the tree skeleton was optimized using the angle consistency. The positional deviation dp and directivity deviation dd were presented in this study to verify the validity of the constructed tree skeleton. From the visualization results, the constructed tree skeleton effectively reflected the geometrical structure and branch hierarchies of the tree. The averages of dp and dd were 0.418 cm and 8.474 degrees, respectively. The results demonstrated the validity of the presented method. It will help improve the visualization and accurate measurement of trees.

Strip steel serves as a crucial raw material in numerous industries, including aircraft and automobile manufacturing. Surface defects in strip steel can degrade the performance, quality, and appearance of industrial steel products. Detecting surface defects in steel strip products is challenging due to the low contrast between defects and background, small defect targets, as well as significant variations in defect sizes. To address these challenges, a two-stage attention-based feature-enhancement network (TAFENet) is proposed, wherein the first-stage feature-enhancement procedure utilizes an attentional convolutional fusion module with convolution to combine all four-level features and then strengthens the features of different levels via a residual spatial-channel attention connection module (RSC). The second-stage feature-enhancement procedure combines three-level features using an attentional self-attention fusion module and then strengthens the features using a RSC attention module. Experiments on the NEU-DET and GC10-DET datasets demonstrated that the proposed method significantly improved detection accuracy, thereby confirming the effectiveness and generalization capability of the proposed method.

Stem volume is a very important parameter in forestry inventory and carbon storage. The stem volume estimated by most existing methods deviates from its true value because the irregularity of the stem is usually overlooked. In this study, we propose a stem segment volume estimation based on the tetrahedron model using TLS data. First, the initial stem segment surface model, including the lower, upper, and outer triangular surface models, was gradually reconstructed. Next, the outer surface model was subdivided based on the edge subdivision. Then, a closed triangular surface model without self-intersection was obtained. Afterward, a tetrahedron model of the stem segment was generated using TetGen software (Version 1.6.0) for the triangular surface model. Finally, the stem segment volume was calculated by summing the volumes of all the tetrahedrons in the tetrahedron model. An experiment with 76 stem segments from different tree species with different parameters showed that the reconstructed stem segment surface model effectively reflected the geometrical features of the stem segment surface. Compared to the volume based on the simulated sectional measurement, the MAPE of the volume based on the tetrahedron model was 2.12%. The results demonstrated the validity of the presented method for stem surface reconstruction and stem volume estimation, and the volume based on the tetrahedron model was closer to the true value than that based on the sectional measurement.

The accurate and efficient detection of steel surface defects remains challenging due to complex backgrounds, diverse defect types, and varying defect scales. The existing CNN-based methods often struggle with capturing long-range dependencies and handling complex background noise, resulting in suboptimal performance. Meanwhile, although Transformer-based approaches are effective in modeling global context, they typically require large-scale datasets and are computationally expensive, limiting their practicality for industrial applications. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel attention-based salient object detector, called the ASOD, to enhance the effectiveness of detectors for strip steel surface defects. In particular, we first design a novel channel-attention-based block including global max/average pooling to focus on the relevant channel-wise features while suppressing irrelevant channel responses, where maximizing pooling extracts the main features of local regions, while removing irrelevant features and average pooling obtain the overall features while removing local details. Then, a new block based on spatial attention is designed to emphasize the area with strip steel surface defects while suppressing irrelevant background areas. In addition, a new cross-spatial-attention-based block is designed to fuse the feature maps with multiple scales filtered through the proposed channel and spatial attention to produce features with better semantic and spatial information such that the detector adapts to strip steel defects of multiple sizes. The experiments show that the ASOD achieves superior performance across multiple evaluation metrics, with a weighted F-measure of 0.9559, an structure measure of 0.9230, a Pratt’s figure of meri of 0.0113, and an mean absolute error of 0.0144. In addition, the ASOD demonstrates strong robustness to noise interference, maintaining consistently high performance even with 10–20% dataset noise, which confirms its stability and reliability.

As the core component of photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems, PV cells are susceptible to subtle surface defects, including thick lines, cracks, and finger interruptions, primarily caused by stress and material brittleness during the manufacturing process. These defects substantially degrade energy conversion efficiency by inducing both optical and electrical losses, yet existing detection methods struggle to precisely identify and localize them. In addition, the complexity of background noise and other factors further increases the challenge of detecting these subtle defects. To address these challenges, we propose a novel PV Cell Surface Defect Detector (PSDD) that extracts subtle defects both within the backbone network and during feature fusion. In particular, we propose a plug-and-play Subtle Feature Refinement Module (SFRM) that integrates into the backbone to enhance fine-grained feature representation by rearranging local spatial features to the channel dimension, mitigating the loss of detail caused by downsampling. SFRM further employs a general attention mechanism to adaptively enhance key channels associated with subtle defects, improving the representation of fine defect features. In addition, we propose a Background Noise Suppression Block (BNSB) as a key component of the feature aggregation stage, which employs a dual-path strategy to fuse multiscale features, reducing background interference and improving defect saliency. Specifically, the first path uses a Background-Aware Module (BAM) to adaptively suppress noise and emphasize relevant features, while the second path adopts a residual structure to retain the original input features and prevent the loss of critical details. Experiments show that PSDD outperforms other methods, achieving the highest mAP50 scores of 93.6% on the PVEL-AD.

Accurate identification of surface defects on steel strips is critical for manufacturing quality assurance and operational reliability. Although deep learning has greatly advanced defect detection, precise recognition remains challenging due to significant background texture interference, loss of spatial details, and semantic imbalance across multiscale features. To address these challenges, we propose A2S2C-Det, a novel detector that integrates dual-path adaptive aggregation with spatial–semantic compensation to enhance feature representation for defect detection. First, we design a plug-and-play semantic refinement bottleneck (SRB) that augments backbone features through multiscale perception and a feature-screening bottleneck, enabling the model to suppress background interference while capturing subtle defect shapes. We further introduce a dual-path adaptive aggregation (DPAA) module that fuses complementary information from cross-level semantic consistency and fine-grained structural cues via two coordinated pathways, alleviating semantic imbalance across scales. Finally, we develop a spatial-semantic gated compensation (SSGC) module that adaptively supplies semantic information to low-level features while delivering spatial details to high-level features, recovering lost spatial details in high-level features. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our A2S2C-Det achieves mAP50 of 82.0%, 73.0%, and 91.2%, and mAP of 47.1%, 36.5%, and 60.6%, respectively, comparing favorably against current state-of-the-art methods.
