Endometriosis, identified by the abnormal growth of endometrial cells beyond the inner lining of the uterus, often manifests through symptoms like painful menstruation and challenges in conceiving. Observational studies suggest that endometriosis is often comorbid with mental disorders, including anxiety and depression. The nature of these connections, whether they are causal, is still debated and calls for further empirical evidence. We utilized a bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, harnessing genome-wide association study data to explore the connections among depression, anxiety, neuroticism, and endometriosis. To scrutinize the causative connections between mental health issues and endometriosis, Inverse Variance Weighting (IVW) was employed as the primary analytical tool, complemented by Weighted Median Estimation, Simple mode, Weighted mode, and MR-Egger regression for additional analysis. To examine the potential for reverse causation, reverse MR was applied. To strengthen the reliability of our findings, we carried out sensitivity analyses that included heterogeneity tests, tests for pleiotropy, and leave-one-out analyses. The IVW analysis revealed a significant correlation between the genetic inclination towards depression and a heightened risk of developing endometriosis [Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.151, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.025–1.293, P = .017]. Similarly, a genetic predisposition to neuroticism was significantly associated with an increased risk of endometriosis (OR = 1.128, 95% CI = 1.038–1.226, P =  .004). However, no causative link was found between genetic susceptibility to anxiety and the occurrence of endometriosis. Reverse MR analysis did not support a bidirectional genetic susceptibility between endometriosis and psychiatric disorders. The MR analysis presents genetic data supporting the notion that depression and neuroticism are risk factors for endometriosis. Conversely, it found no evidence of a causal connection between anxiety and the development of endometriosis. Enhancing mental health treatment should be considered a preventive measure against endometriosis.

Background: Breast cancer poses a significant health threat to women, marked by high incidence and mortality rates. Although modern treatment primarily involves surgery and chemotherapy, which may reduce quality of life, limited analysis exists on the effects of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on this aspect. In this paper, bibliometric software was used to study the literature related to TCM in the treatment of breast cancer to provide researchers with new insights and directions for development. Methods: By using CiteSpace and VOSviewer, we conducted an analysis of literature on TCM in breast cancer treatment from the Web of Science Core Collection (2013–2023). The assessment encompassed countries, institutions, journals, authors, keywords, and references, providing a comprehensive overview of developments in the field. Results: Analyzing 7419 articles, this study revealed an increasing trend in TCM research on breast cancer from 2013 to 2023. China and its institutions, particularly Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, made significant contributions. Liu Zhishun emerged as the most prolific author, while Y. Macpherson received the highest number of citations. The journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine received the highest number of citations. Research primarily centers on TCM approaches for enhancing breast cancer patients’ quality of life and elucidating their underlying mechanisms. Conclusion: Numerous studies have investigated TCM in treating female breast cancer, revealing treatment trends, analyzing major research topics, currently focusing on acupuncture, breastfeeding, and TCM, which have a greater impact on positively ameliorating breast cancer. Influential authors and publications were also identified. These insights provide valuable guidance for future research, contributing to the foundation for developing effective TCM strategies for breast cancer.

Objective: Although fMRI has been widely used in the field of acupuncture. However, the literature analysis in this field still has significant differences. This study summarizes the current status of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion and predicts its future trends through Web of Science bibliometric analysis. Methods: This study uses “fMRI” and “acupuncture” as keywords to search for literature related to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in acupuncture research in the Web of Science Core Collection database from January 1, 2004, to April 30, 2024. Visualization analyses were conducted using Citespace (version 6.3 R1) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.20). Citespace was employed to analyze annual publications, countries, institutions, keywords, and co-cited references. VOSviewer was used to analyze authors and co-cited authors, as well as journals and co-cited journals. Results: From 2004 to 2024, a total of 967 publications were retrieved, of which 557 were included after screening. Despite annual fluctuations, the overall trend shows an increase. China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are the countries and institutions with the highest number of publications, with Tian, J being the author with the most publications, and Kong, J having the highest Co-citation frequency. The article by Dhond, RP, published in 2008, has the highest Co-citation frequency among the co-cited literature. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine is the journal with the most publications, while Neuroimage is the co-cited journal with the highest citation frequency. Keyword co-occurrence and burst reveal the main research hotspots, including the diversity of intervention methods, cortical activation, mechanisms related to pain-associated diseases, and brain-related diseases. Keyword burst detection reflects emerging trends, including meta-analysis and systematic reviews, the relationship between ischemic stroke and women, and the connection between mild cognitive impairment and prevention. Conclusion: This study employs bibliometric methods to explore the current status, research hotspots, and frontier issues regarding the application of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology in the field of acupuncture, providing new perspectives and directions for acupuncture fMRI research.

Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) is a promising treatment for gastrointestinal disorders, yet the efficacy of different acupoint combinations remains mechanistically undefined. We evaluated the therapeutic effects of different acupoint combinations on mucosal inflammatory injury induced in a rat model of gastric ulcer (GU) and dissected its molecular mechanisms through transcriptomic profiling. Methods: A GU rat model was established using hypothermic restrained water immersion stress. EA therapy was administered to the He-Mu (ST36-CV12), Shu-Mu (BL21-CV12), and Yuan-Luo (ST42- ST40) acupoint combinations for 5 days. EA therapeutic effects were evaluated by coat score, fecal moisture percentage, pain threshold, body mass, organ index, histopathological changes, serum level of oxidative stress, and inflammatory cytokine levels in gastric tissue. A transcriptome analysis identified the related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and central signaling pathway. Real-time quantitative PCR and Western blot were performed to verify the mRNA and protein expression levels of the main genes in the central pathway. Results: EA using different acupoint combinations differentially alleviated gastric mucosal injury in GU rats, with the He-Mu group exhibiting superior tissue damage alleviation, as well as inflammation and oxidative stress reductions. A Venn diagram transcriptome analysis revealed a shared central pathway among the three groups, corresponding to focal adhesion. Quantitative validation confirmed that the mRNA, protein, and phosphorylated protein expression of FAK, VCL, and EGFR—the core signal transduction factors of the focal adhesion pathway activated in gastric tissue after EA treatment—were upregulated, consistent with their therapeutic efficacy. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the He-Mu acupoint combination exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy among the three acupoint combinations. EA using different acupoint combinations improved gastric mucosal injury to varying degrees, and was related to the focal adhesion pathway. The FAK, VCL, and EGFR are promising targets, and further studies are needed to elucidate their functional consequences in GU.
