Pedestrian detection plays a critical role in computer vision as it contributes to ensuring traffic safety. Existing methods that rely solely on RGB images suffer from performance degradation under low-light conditions due to the lack of useful information. To address this issue, recent multispectral detection approaches have combined thermal images to provide complementary information and have obtained enhanced performances. Nevertheless, few approaches focus on the negative effects of false positives (FPs) caused by noisy fused feature maps. Different from them, we comprehensively analyze the impacts of FPs on detection performance and find that enhancing feature contrast can significantly reduce these FPs. In this article, we propose a novel target-aware fusion strategy for multispectral pedestrian detection, named TFDet. The target-aware fusion strategy employs a fusion-refinement paradigm. In the fusion phase, we reveal the parallel- and cross-channel similarities in RGB and thermal features and learn an adaptive receptive field to collect useful information from both features. In the refinement phase, we use a segmentation branch to discriminate the pedestrian features from the background features. We propose a correlation-maximum loss function to enhance the contrast between the pedestrian features and background features. As a result, our fusion strategy highlights pedestrian-related features and suppresses unrelated ones, generating more discriminative fused features. TFDet achieves state-of-the-art performance on two multispectral pedestrian benchmarks, KAIST and LLVIP, with absolute gains of 0.65% and 4.1% over the previous best approaches, respectively. TFDet can easily extend to multiclass object detection scenarios. It outperforms the previous best approaches on two multispectral object detection benchmarks, FLIR and M3FD, with absolute gains of 2.2% and 1.9%, respectively. Importantly, TFDet has comparable inference efficiency to the previous approaches and has remarkably good detection performance even under low-light conditions, which is a significant advancement for ensuring road safety. The code will be made publicly available at https://github.com/XueZ-phd/TFDet.git.

Most recent multispectral object detectors employ a two-branch structure to extract features from RGB and thermal images. While the two-branch structure achieves better performance than a single-branch structure, it overlooks inference efficiency. This conflict is increasingly aggressive, as recent works solely pursue higher performance rather than both performance and efficiency. In this paper, we address this issue by improving the performance of efficient single-branch structures. We revisit the reasons causing the performance gap between these structures. For the first time, we reveal the information interference problem in the naive early-fusion strategy adopted by previous single-branch structures. Besides, we find that the domain gap between multispectral images, and weak feature representation of the single-branch structure are also key obstacles for performance. Focusing on these three problems, we propose corresponding solutions, including a novel shape-priority early-fusion strategy, a weakly supervised learning method, and a core knowledge distillation technique. Experiments demonstrate that single-branch networks equipped with these three contributions achieve significant performance enhancements while retaining high efficiency. Our code will be available at https://github.com/XueZ-phd/Efficient-RGB-T-Early-Fusion-Detection .

4D millimeter-wave radar has gained attention as an emerging sensor for autonomous driving in recent years. However, existing 4D radar and camera fusion models often fail to fully exploit complementary information within each modality and lack deep cross-modal interactions. To address these issues, we propose a novel 4D radar and camera fusion method, named SGDet3D, for 3D object detection. Specifically, we first introduce a dual-branch fusion module that employs geometric depth completion and semantic radar PillarNet to comprehensively leverage geometric and semantic information within each modality. Then we introduce an object-oriented attention module that employs localization-aware cross-attention to facilitate deep interactions across modalites by allowing queries in bird's-eye view (BEV) to attend to interested image tokens. We validate our SGDet3D on the TJ4DRadSet and View-of-Delft (VoD) datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that SGDet3D effectively fuses 4D radar data and camera image and achieves state-of-the-art performance.
