Multi-autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) cooperative localization has become a research hotspot in the marine navigation field. In this paper, a filtering algorithm for slave AUV with compass failure is proposed based on ‘two-master-one slave’ cooperative localization model. In this algorithm, the course angle is unknown, and non-Gaussian measurement noise caused by measurement outliers is considered. The cooperative localization model is reconstructed, and a filtering algorithm is derived whose performance will not be affected by the unknown course angle. Moreover, the maximum information potential (MIP) criterion is introduced into a recursive model to deal with the non-Gaussian measurement noise in a complicated underwater environment. Simultaneously, the kernel bandwidth is adaptively adjusted by the innovation matrix and the measurement error covariance matrix. The proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the variation of the unknown course angle without expanding the dimension of state under the condition of non-Gaussian measurement noise. Finally, the proposed algorithm is verified through field experiments. The results show that the proposed algorithm has higher accuracy and robustness than other existing algorithms.

The calibration accuracy of the Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) error directly affects the performance of the SINS/DVL integrated navigation system. Previous studies of DVL calibration have not dealt with DVL measurement outliers. Therefore, in this paper, a novel DVL calibration method is proposed to reduce the influence of outliers on calibration accuracy. Introducing the Lie group theory to the DVL calibration study for the first time, and taking advantage of the Special Orthogonal Group of order 3 [SO(3)] representation, a new DVL calibration model based SO(3) group with the ability to represent large misalignment angles is established. And an invariant extended Kalman filter (IEKF) design for the DVL calibration model is introduced. Then, a robust IEKF is proposed by combining the linear error propagation equation of the SO(3)-based DVL calibration model with the statistical similarity measure (SSM) theory. The proposed robust IEKF algorithm enriches the IEKF theory and has the ability to accurately estimate the state of the Lie group model in outlier environments. The simulation and lake trial are used to illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed DVL calibration method.
In this paper, an improved maximum correntropy cubature kalman filter(IMCCKF) is proposed to address the measurement outliers in cooperative localization(CL) of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The estimated performance of the maximum correntropy cubature kalman filter(MCCKF) algorithm is affected by the kernel bandwidth(KB). The selection value of the KB cannot be determined only by experience in practical CL of AUVs, which will greatly reduce the practical application value of the MCCKF algorithm. The adaptive factor is constructed by comparing the trace size of innovation matrix and the trace size of quantity prediction error matrix, and the KB in the MCCKF is adjusted online by the adaptive factor. Finally, the validity of the proposed IMCCKF method is verified by the lake test data. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the ability to adjust the KB in real time and quickly obtain the optimal value of the KB, and the IMCCKF algorithm can effectively improve the positioning performance of CL system with measurement outliers.
Aiming at the problem of outliers in Doppler velocity log (DVL) beam measurements, for strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS)/Doppler velocity log (DVL) tightly coupled system, an improved robust Kalman filter (KF) algorithm is proposed, which can handle the measurement noise variance of each DVL beam individually. First, the multidimensional measurement equation is decomposed into several 1-D measurement equations, i.e., different DVL beam measurements are assumed to be obtained by different sensors. Second, the statistical similarity measure (SSM) is introduced to quantify the similarity between two random vectors. And a new cost function based on SSM is constructed for the dynamic system containing one state equation and multiple measurement equations. To optimize this cost function, the iterative procedures to update the posterior state is derived based on the Gauss-Newton iteration algorithm. Both the simulation and lake trial illustrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. It is shown that in the case of partial DVL beams with outliers, the proposed algorithm can avoid the loss of normal measurement information and thus improve estimation accuracy.

In this study, to cope with time-varying delay in acoustic communication under non-Gaussian noise caused by outliers, a novel robust delay filtering algorithm is proposed for cooperative localization of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). First, the modified measurement equations of the nonlinear cooperative location system with time-varying delay are derived, and the delay caused by the information processing and propagation of the underwater acoustic modem is converted into measurement bias. Second, to improve the robustness of the system with outliers caused by abnormal measurement values of underwater acoustic communication and Doppler velocity log (DVL), the statistical similarity measure (SSM) is introduced to construct the cost function. This is accomplished by quantifying the similarity between the state vector and the predicted state vector, similarity between the delay measurement, and modified predicted delay measurement. Finally, the modified measurement noise variance is obtained by maximizing the cost function, and two algorithms for the approximate solution of the nonlinear cost function are presented. The proposed robust delayed algorithm alleviates the impacts of delayed measurement with outliers on localization accuracy. The effectiveness and potential of the proposed filter are verified by lake trials.
