Franz-Georg Hanisch is a professor at the Center of Biochemistry, Medical Faculty, University of
Cologne, Germany. Franz-Georg Hanisch earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Cologne in 1982. From 1982-1989, he was postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Immunobiology, Medical Faculty, University of Cologne. In 1989, he finished his habilitation at the Medical Faculty (Venia legendi for Immunobiology). During 1991, he was a guest scientist at the Clinical Research Center, Harrow (London), hosted by Dr. Ten Feizi. In 1995, he became a professor at the Medical Faculty, Institute of Biochemistry II, and headed, for over 20 years, the Molecular Biology Group. From 2001-2014, he headed, in parallel, the CMMC Bioanalytics (Center for Molecular Medicine, Cologne) at the University of Cologne. From 2009-2012, he served as chairman of the Study Group Glycobiology of the Society for Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology in Germany.
Franz-Georg Hanisch's research is related to various aspects of molecular glycobiology, with special focus on mucin-(MUC1) glycosylation and immunogenicity in anti-cancer strategies and on carbohydrate-lectin interactions in innate immunity (development of anti-infectiva in anti-norovirus strategies). A further focus is proteomics-based research on the molecular pathomechanisms of rare hereditary diseases (classic galactosemia, and ADTKD-MUC1).
