Purpose This research focuses on establishing relationships between eco-innovation and organisational innovation and innovation in general to characterise organisational eco-innovation in European Union companies. We also aim to investigate the forms of innovations that eco-innovative companies use as well as the factors or determinants of eco-innovation in the corporate environment that impel the use of organisational innovation. Design/methodology/approach We use the estimation of different binary logistic regression models with maximum likelihood applied to a sample obtained from the Eurostat's Community Innovation Survey 2014 database as a starting point. Findings The results suggest that the type of organisational innovation most closely related to eco-innovation is found in work responsibility and decision-making methods. Some less frequently studied significant factors are highlighted, such as training or aspects related to intellectual capital and knowledge management, since significant indications of the importance and acquisition of existing know-how have appeared, in contrast to internal knowledge generation. Originality/value The study seeks to observe what specific quantitative drivers (external or internal) are used for organisational eco-innovation, as a specific subtype of eco-innovation. This can improve our understanding of the ways in which organisational innovation can be used by corporations to provide environmental benefits. The academic literature provides information on the drivers and determinants for both organisational innovation and eco-innovation separately, but we believe this article offers a new approach by looking at the specific eco-innovation drivers achieved through organisational innovation.

This paper studies what factors influence European citizens in their e-government adoption and use, and whether there are differences within the European Union. A binary logistic regression model has been used to determine the profile of e-government users. The article highlights especially the influence of digital skills, as an increasingly influential factor, and opens up new areas of research such as the uses of e-government depending on the population density or sociodemographic factors. Given a certain lack of e-government studies at a pan-European level, this article provides an empirical comparative analysis in the EU and provides insights into the factors influencing the behaviour of European e-citizens.

The “Smart territory” concept emerges strongly not only as an extension of the smart city concept but also in opposition to it. The “smartization” of cities can produce a digital gap in the territories, particularly in rural areas that do not have the services and capabilities that citizens in urban areas enjoy. This is the first study fully focusing on the concept of ‘smart territory’, its relevance and the reasons for its emergence. It is also a wake-up call about the benefits of its momentum in the field of digital public policies, particularly in Europe. The beginning of the EU programming period 2021–2027 represents a good opportunity to include clear initiatives for smartization in the Territorial Cohesion Policies, expanding their wider scope and operationalization to different geographical areas.

This paper looks in more depth at an analysis of MOOC students’ social entrepreneurial intentions, their profiles and motivations, especially as regards the tensions between internal and external motivations and the influence of the environment on the decision to set up a social enterprise. It also offers insights into online education for social entrepreneurs, as we believe that a better understanding of such training and its participants may help to stimulate social entrepreneurship from the educational sphere. Using a large sample obtained from a survey of 1457 respondents, our study offers a new perspective on distance learning social entrepreneurship students’ socio-demographic characteristics and the importance of both their desire for self-fulfilment and the influence of their environment.

The academic literature indicates that “glamour” influences the investor’s behaviour. This article analyses the performance and value creation of the glamorous operations of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the telecommunications sector, trying to understand if these operations are conducive to stockholder wealth maximization. To conduct this analysis, the telecommunications M&A that occurred in the convulsed period of the internet bubble were counted as samples (1995–2010). The research concludes that glamour tends to be opposite to value creation in the long run: the glamour firms show significant value destruction and worse performance than non-glamour firms. Certain acquirers’ characteristics, such as size, are determinant in the glamour behaviour. This paper combats the shortage of research of a quantitative sectoral nature on telecommunications M&As, when leading international companies like Vodafone, Cable and Wireless, France Telecom or Telecom Italia are very active in this kind of operations.

This paper studies price asymmetries (the ‘rockets and feathers effect’) at the firm level using an approach that fundamentally differs from the previous literature. The research analyses the Spanish oil market, using more than 11 million daily price records from December, 23, 2014, to December 31, 2017. We apply the most common econometric approach to investigate asymmetry, the error correction model, and find asymmetries for all brands, either classic brands or low-cost flag brands. Classic brands make price adjustments in shorter periods, whereas supermarket brands, as well as independent and low-cost brands, correct prices only slowly. This research makes an original contribution to the study of the rockets and feathers phenomenon using brands as the units of analysis. The speed of price adjustments is especially relevant to understanding oil market price dynamics.

Purpose This paper aims to critically review the progression of wireless technologies in tourism and hospitality since 2000. Wireless technologies are a set of information and communications technologies (ICTs) involving radio transmission (such as mobile or satellite technologies) that are extensively used in tourism and hospitality, but which have not yet been studied comprehensively. Design/methodology/approach This study is a mixed methods review combining a quantitative and qualitative approach and including a systematic review of the academic literature since 2000. Findings Contrary to the prevailing focus of study on mobile technologies, the authors open the field to other technologies (such as Zigbee or Bluetooth), and in a particular highlight, the large role played by satellite technology in tourism and how this is reflected in the literature. In literature reviews linking tourism and ICTs, the authors find that excluding some journals may leave out notable aspects for any systematic analysis. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of wireless technologies in a sensor-based convergence between the physical and digital worlds. Originality/value The contribution is mainly twofold: first, the authors develop the literature on tourism with a better understanding of the role played by these technologies in supporting tourism and hospitality, by updating sources and research work; second, the authors take a holistic, all-encompassing approach, providing a truly comprehensive view of the literature on tourism and ICTs, in which wireless technologies have always been approached with fragmented or limited scope, lacking a view in the round.

The evolution of mobile networks towards the Fifth Generation (5G) introduces many concerns from the technical and economic points of view. Expected new applications exceed mobile networks’ current capabilities, and 4G networks will have to evolve into 5G networks to provide some with a proper service. With regard to the ambitious intended performance of 5G networks, a huge process is required which will need to be faced both technically and economically. The 5G “ready system” standard is scheduled for 2020. However, only a few studies have carried out techno-economic evaluation of 5G. This paper presents a techno-economic analysis to foresee some feasible technical architectures leading to suitable and affordable use cases. The paper presents a new approach based on different evolving technical scenarios, establishing combined 4G/5G technical solutions and a roadmap that could provide useful insights about the most suitable use cases by scenario. Moreover, it analyses these possible use cases to determine their feasibility by optimizing their deployment costs. The study is based on the standardization process, integration of different views of key industrial players and mathematical modelling to address the new applications that 5G will provide. Finally, conclusions are drawn from the analysis and a recommendation score is established, providing useful advice to support the strategic decisions of the different stakeholders, technologists and investors involved in deployment of 5G networks.

The aim of this article is to provide an in-depth examination of the relationship between coopetition and innovation in the European context. After examining the main findings in the literature on the subject, this article analyzes the data from the Eurostat Community Innovation Survey in Germany, and conducts a quantitative study associating coopetition and innovation with a view to observing how coopetitive companies perform in the field of innovation and what characteristics they have. Among other findings, the results show that international coopetition relates to cooperation with international clients in the public sector, governments and international universities. Less interest in collaborating with private partners is observed when coopeting on a domestic level. The size of the firm, the location of the partners, and the percentage of employees with a university degree are just some of the factors that are incorporated in the analysis.

In this paper, we analyse the role of the student’s digital reputation as a motivational factor for successfully completing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). After a review of the academic literature on the role that the student’s reputation plays in community learning and to understand the role of involving the student that new techniques of gamification have taken in virtual learning, an empirical analysis is performed on the basis of data from a pioneer MOOC of Social Entrepreneurship (5016 registered students, 3250 of whom actually started). Using Classification and Regression Trees (CARTs) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), we conclude that social reputation is a key factor for the student in successfully completing the course, and that the student’s retention is, along with his e-reputation (“karma”), directly related to his degree of participation, the rewards received, and his correspondence with peers. This shows that one of the factors that explain the student’s MOOC completion is his degree of interaction with other students, and particularly his reputation among them.

This paper addresses several topics of great interest in computer security in recent years: computer users’ behavior, security incidents and fraud exposure on the Internet, due to their high economic and social cost. Traditional research has been based mainly on gathering information about security incidents and fraud through surveys. The novelty of the present study is given by the use of Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), a visual data mining technique. SOMs are applied to two data sets acquired using two different methodologies for collecting data about computer security. First, a traditional online survey about fraud exposure, security and user behavior was used. Second, in addition to surveys, real data obtained from some of the users’ computers were also considered. In this way, the answers of the users can be benchmarked with the true situation of their computers. The surveys and the scanning of the computers were conducted in Spain from December 2013 to June 2014 by the National Observatory of Telecommunications and Information Society of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, performing 9181 surveys and 6350 computer scans in total. SOMs were applied to the datasets in their entirety first, and then a local analysis of the most interesting zones was carried out by zooming in on them. This approach allows for more detailed knowledge extraction. We conclude that SOMs enhance insight and interpretability about both data sets by untangling hidden relationships between variables, and could be helpful for similar future studies.

In order to analyse, manage, and compare social projects we need, among other things, to be able to measure their impact. One of the methodologies currently used to measure and manage social impact is Social Return on Investment (SROI). However, not all the results calculated by the SROI method are directly attributable to the project, and, therefore, to determine the real impact it is necessary to filter out the changes that the project has not produced. Filter coefficients perform this function. However, the theoretical logic on which the chain is constructed that converts the outputs into impacts is ambiguous. In this study, we will analyse twenty-five real cases where SROI was used to measure social projects. We will identify the difficulties of isolating and measuring impacts by performing a comparative study of the procedures that entities develop to calculate the filters. This allows us to calculate the impacts from the outputs. We will then propose the improvements needed to overcome these shortcomings.

This paper analyses the WiFi4EU initiative, the measure proposed by the European Commission (EC) to speed up public access to Wi-Fi throughout Europe in the coming years by subsidising the infrastructure. We set out to analyse how these measures are incorporated into the EU policies for building a Gigabit Society and the EC's regulatory tradition, and what the impact is likely to be. This innovative initiative has been drawn up in a climate of uncertainties and delays, and will have an effect upon the network deployments strategies of operators and countries. The article puts all of this into the context of the current European regulation debate and conducts a techno-economic analysis to assess the expected impact of the initiative. We have observed a slight shift towards developmental models in the EC regulatory framework and a step ahead towards multi-level governance. Furthermore, the techno-economic analysis has revealed the limited extent of Community aid and the considerable variability of the equipment deployed and the expenditure involved. We have also highlighted the questionable formulation of the allocation mechanisms, and we have included certain examples or suggestions for improvement.

According to academic literature, organisational innovation is the least researched type of innovation. In this article we delve into the study of organisational innovation by presenting a quantitative analysis at a European Union level based on data from the Eurostat community innovation survey (CIS 2012). Using a logistic model, we observe that there are multiple factors that are having a negative effect on organisational innovation, such as competition in prices, product launches before competitors or the role of the public sector as a customer that provides new and relevant information. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that innovation with external partners shows different dynamics to other types of organisational innovation. In certain cases, the company must open itself up to the outside world and interact with other stakeholders because of factors as lack of demand, lack of funding and the high cost of access to new markets, as the findings confirmed statistically.

Given that the creation of successful interactions and collaboration networks develops into sustainable and successful social entrepreneurial organisations, learning communities can serve as an ideal environment to train students in social entrepreneurship. This paper describes massive open online learning communities as an appropriate methodology for the distance teaching of social entrepreneurship and how the students on a massive online open course in social entrepreneurship commit to the learning community generated in this virtual environment. Data from a pioneer social entrepreneurship massive open online learning communities were analysed using three statistical methodologies. The analysis demonstrates that a student's commitment to the distance learning community is directly related to his degree of participation, the rewards received, his correspondence with the other students and recognition from the other members of the community.

“Progress in information technology and tourism management: 20 years on and 10 years after the Internet—The state of eTourism research” is reviewed in terms of its significance to academic literature linking Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and tourism. Ten years after its publication in 2008, we revisit this paper with a view to observing the main changes in eTourism over these years, analysing the strategic lines that are driving its evolution, and verifying the fulfilment of the tendencies anticipated by Buhalis and Law. Their diagnosis has been very accurate and, given the rapidity of the technological changes, it is appropriate to highlight the changes that this sector has experienced since then.

This article examines the effects of the new e-citizens’ digital skills in their behaviour as e-tourists. It analyses how European digital citizens behave in digital tourism, and whether there are any geographical differences. We have observed that the most influential factor for these e-Tourism activities is having made purchases via the Internet in the past 12 months. Differences have been detected between the more developed and less developed areas of Europe, which could indicate a digital divide. Therefore, the results indicate divergent behaviour patterns in digital travel and accommodation, as well as divergent trends in different EU geographical areas.
