Recently, methods have been developed to analyse couplings in dynamic systems. In the field of medical analysis of complex cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory systems, there is growing interest in how insights may be gained into the interaction between regulatory mechanisms in healthy and diseased persons. The couplings within and between these systems can be linear or nonlinear. However, the complex mechanisms involved in cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory regulation very likely interact with each other in a nonlinear way. Recent advances in nonlinear dynamics and information theory have allowed the multivariate study of information transfer between time series. They therefore might be able to provide additional diagnostic and prognostic information in medicine and might, in particular, be able to complement traditional linear coupling analysis techniques. In this review, we describe the approaches (Granger causality, nonlinear prediction, entropy, symbolization, phase synchronization) most commonly applied to detect direct and indirect couplings between time series, especially focusing on nonlinear approaches. We will discuss their capacity to quantify direct and indirect couplings and the direction (driver–response relationship) of the considered interaction between different biological time series. We also give their basic theoretical background, their basic requirements for application, their main features and demonstrate their usefulness in different applications in the field of cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory coupling analyses.
Internet of Things based health care systems play a significant role in Information and Communication Technologies and has contribution in development of medical information systems. The developing of IoT-based health care systems must ensure and increase the safety of patients, the quality of life and other health care activities. The tracking, tracing and monitoring of patients and health care actors activities are challenging research directions. In this paper we propose a general architecture of a health care system for monitoring of patients at risk in smart Intensive Care Units. The system advices and alerts in real time the doctors/medical assistants about the changing of vital parameters or the movement of the patients and also about important changes in environmental parameters, in order to take preventive measures.

Neurological diseases like Alzheimer, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and other dementias influence the lives of patients, their families and society. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that occurs due to loss of dopamine, a neurotransmitter and slow destruction of neurons. Brain area affected by progressive destruction of neurons is responsible for controlling movements, and patients with PD reveal rigid and uncontrollable gestures, postural instability, small handwriting and tremor. Commercial activity-promoting gaming systems such as the Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect can be used as tools for tremor, gait or other biomedical signals acquisitions. They also can aid for rehabilitation in clinical settings. This paper emphasizes the use of intelligent optical sensors or accelerometers in biomedical signal acquisition, and of the specific nonlinear dynamics parameters or fuzzy logic in Parkinson's disease tremor analysis. Nowadays, there is no screening test for early detection of PD. So, we investigated a method to predict PD, based on the image processing of the handwriting belonging to a candidate of PD. For classification and discrimination between healthy people and PD people we used Artificial Neural Networks (Radial Basis Function - RBF and Multilayer Perceptron - MLP) and an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Classifier (ANFC). In general, the results may be expressed as a prognostic (risk degree to contact PD)
In recent years, artificial intelligence has begun to play a salient role in various medical fields, including ophthalmology. This extensive review is addressed to ophthalmologists and aims to capture the current landscape and future potential of AI applications for eye health. From automated retinal screening processes and machine learning models predicting the progression of ocular conditions to AI-driven decision support systems in clinical settings, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical implications of AI in ophthalmology. The development of AI has opened new horizons for ophthalmology, offering innovative solutions to improve the accuracy and efficiency of ocular disease diagnosis and management. The importance of this paper lies in its potential to strengthen collaboration between researchers, ophthalmologists, and AI specialists, leading to transformative findings in the early identification and treatment of eye diseases. By combining AI potential with cutting-edge imaging methods, novel biomarkers, and data-driven approaches, ophthalmologists can make more informed decisions and provide personalized treatment for their patients. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes the translation of basic research outcomes into clinical applications. We do hope this comprehensive review will act as a significant resource for ophthalmologists, researchers, data scientists, healthcare professionals, and managers in the healthcare system who are interested in the application of artificial intelligence in eye health.
The paper proposes a comparative analysis of the projection matrices and dictionaries used for compressive sensing (CS) of electrocardiographic signals (ECG), highlighting the compromises between the complexity of preprocessing and the accuracy of reconstruction. Starting from the basic notions of CS theory, this paper proposes the construction of dictionaries (constructed directly by cardiac patterns with R-waves, centered or not-centered) specific to the application and the results of their testing. Several types of projection matrices are also analyzed and discussed. The reconstructed signals are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by standard distortion measures and by the classification of the reconstructed signals. We used a k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifier to evaluate the reconstructed models. The KNN module was trained with the models from the mega-dictionary used in the classification block and tested with the models reconstructed with class-specific dictionaries. In addition to the KNN classifier, a neural network was used to test the reconstructed signals. The neural network was a multilayer perceptron (MLP). Moreover, the results are compared with those obtained with other compression methods, and ours proved to be superior.
