Bluetooth (over IEEE 802.15.1), ultra-wideband (UWB, over IEEE 802.15.3), ZigBee (over IEEE 802.15.4), and Wi-Fi (over IEEE 802.11) are four protocol standards for short- range wireless communications with low power consumption. From an application point of view, bluetooth is intended for a cordless mouse, keyboard, and hands-free headset, UWB is oriented to high-bandwidth multimedia links, ZigBee is designed for reliable wirelessly networked monitoring and control networks, while Wi-Fi is directed at computer-to-computer connections as an extension or substitution of cabled networks. In this paper, we provide a study of these popular wireless communication standards, evaluating their main features and behaviors in terms of various metrics, including the transmission time, data coding efficiency, complexity, and power consumption. It is believed that the comparison presented in this paper would benefit application engineers in selecting an appropriate protocol.

In order to collect information more efficiently, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are partitioned into clusters. Clustering provides an effective way to prolong the lifetime of WSNs. Current clustering approaches often use two methods: selecting cluster heads with more residual energy, and rotating cluster heads periodically, to distribute the energy consumption among nodes in each cluster and extend the network lifetime. However, most of the previous algorithms have not considered the expected residual energy, which is the predicated remaining energy for being selected as a cluster head and running a round. In this paper, a fuzzy-logic-based clustering approach with an extension to the energy predication has been proposed to prolong the lifetime of WSNs by evenly distributing the workload. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is more efficient than other distributed algorithms. It is believed that the technique presented in this paper could be further applied to large-scale wireless sensor networks.

Topology control in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) balances the communication load on sensor devices and increases the network lifetime and scalability. Hierarchical or cluster-based design is one of the approaches to conserve the energy of the sensor networks in which the nodes with the higher residual energy could be used to gather data and route the information. However, most of the previous work on clustering has adopted a two-layer hierarchy, and only few methods studied a three-layer scheme instead. Based on a three-layer hierarchy, this paper has proposed a semi-distributed clustering approach by considering a hybrid of centralized gridding for the upper level head selection and distributed clustering for the lower level head selection. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is more efficient than other distributed algorithms. Therefore, the technique presented in this paper could be further applied to large-scale WSNs.

Energy conservation plays a crucial role in sensor network design. Hierarchical clustering design is one of the approaches to save energy of the sensor networks. However, for mobile sensor networks (MSNs), packet loss that occurs due to the mobility of sensor nodes is also an important issue. In this paper, an improved low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy protocol for MSNs has been proposed to not only prolong the network lifetime, but also reduce the packet loss using fuzzy inference systems. Simulation results indicate that the proposed approach is more effective than the other existing ones in terms of the network lifetime, energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, and cluster deviation. Therefore, the technique presented in this paper could further be adapted to investigate highly MSNs.

Falls are a primary accident for the elderly people living independently. Obviously, timely and accurate fall detection is critical to reduce the injuries and avoid the loss of life. In order to improve existing smartphone-based fall detection systems, this paper investigates the features of triaxial acceleration values acquired from built-in accelerometers of a smartphone, identifies crucial thresholds of the falls as well as non-falls, and then proposes an enhanced threshold-based fall detection approach, which could not only distinguish fall events from the most of daily activities (including walking, running, sitting down, and so on), but also support four directions (forward, backward, left lateral, and right lateral) of the falls. In addition, once a falling accident is identified, the user position would be instantaneously transmitted to an emergency center in order to have timely medical assistance. As a consequence, experimental results show the feasibility of our enhanced approach with accuracy and detection rates of 99.38.
